Four U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) cadets were awarded with 2017 Thomas B. Crowley Memorial Scholarships during yesterday’s Containerization and Intermodal Institute’s Connie Awards luncheon in Newark, N.J. Jenny Terpenning, supervisor, marine recruiting at Crowley Maritime Corporation, presented the scholarships to Midshipmen (MIDN) Joshua Cann, Vincent Policastro, Rebecca Snyder and Benjamin Starr while also formally recognizing 2016 recipient Chandler Chiappe, all of whom were chosen based on their academic performance…
INS Shardul on Surveillance in South India Ocean
In keeping with India’s national objective of ensuring a secure and stable regional environment to allow unhindered economic and social development, not just in India, but also in the Indian Ocean Region, Indian Naval Ship Shardul is on a two month long deployment in the South Indian Ocean with an aim to provide surveillance support in the region. The warship during the initial phase of deployment carried out joint EEZ surveillance of Mauritius from 08 – 26 March 2017 in close coordination with National Coast Guard, Mauritius. Post successful completion of joint EEZ Surveillance of Mauritius, the warship entered EEZ of Seychelles on 27 March 2017 for Phase I of EEZ surveillance. The warship under the command of Commander Rohit Mishra entered Port Victoria on 28 March 2017 for OTR.

Crowley’s Jenny Terpenning, supervisor, marine recruiting, presented the scholarships to Midshipmen (MIDN) Stacee Glass, Connor Sexton, John Terselic, Tanner Evans, Dylan Rabbitt, and Chandler Chiappe, all of whom were chosen based on their academic performance, financial need and interest in pursuing a career at sea after graduation.

Celestial Navigation (CELNAV) is one skill that has not been formally taught to Navy officers, depending on one's commissioning source, for more than 15 years.

US and JMSDF Ships Train in Norfolk
The USS Harry S. Truman and ships from the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) moored in Norfolk on August 2, completing the at-sea phase of a training exercise. The bilateral exercise, which culminated with a passing exercise, was designed to provide a realistic training environment for U.S. Navy and the JMSDF Training Squadron ships. Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26 worked closely with the JMSDF Training Squadron, which trains the newly-commissioned Japanese surface warfare officers, to replicate the operational challenges routinely encountered around the world. According to Navy Counselor 1st Class (SW/EXW) Benjamin Hammer, the exercise made a contribution to the team-building efforts of the maritime partners.

Navy Safety Excellence Award 2006 Winners Honored
Secretary of the Navy, Dr. Donald C. Winter presents the Department of the Navy 2006 Safety Excellence Award for Marine Corps ground safety to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune at the Navy Memorial. During the ceremony, Winter discussed the importance of personal responsibility in regard to safety, and he stressed the need for the Navy and Marine Corps to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents. Sixteen Safety Excellence Awards were presented to the top Navy and Marine Corps commands that demonstrated extraordinary excellence by sustained mission success with simultaneous exemplary safety performance.
