Maritime security and law enforcement experts are gathering in Boston this week to better understand maritime domain awareness and the challenges of port, waterway and coastal security, environmental protection, safety and law enforcement. One big lesson learned is that everything is just a little more challenging on the water. A number of law enforcement agencies from the New England area are attending and participating that have specific duties and functions associated with the maritime environment…

MTU 4000 Engines Power New LNG Terminal Tugs

Boston Harbor has been an important shipping center for more than 300 years, from its influx of European immigrants to the wide variety of cargo it handles today. Since the early 1970s, the area has become a major center for unloading the liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers that supply natural gas to much of the Northeast. Getting those tankers safely to their terminals is the job of ship-assist tugboats such as those operated by Boston Towing and Transportation (BT&T). When BT&T commissioned two new tugs for assisting LNG tankers belonging to global giant Suez Energy North America…

Calypso Withdraws Deepwater Application

On February 25, 2009, Calypso LNG, LLC informed the Maritime Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard it will cease all license processing work on the Calypso Deepwater Port LNG project, fully withdrawing its application from consideration at this time. As such, Calypso will not pursue the necessary approvals from the Maritime Administration or the state to license their proposed energy receiving facility off the coast of Florida. In 2007, Calypso (and its parent company, GDF Suez Energy North America) negotiated a landmark LNG tanker U.S.-flag and crew agreement with the Maritime Administration to operate its deepwater port with over 100 highly trained and well paid U.S. citizen mariners when it became operational.

Neptune LNG Deepwater Port Project Receives License From MarAd

SUEZ Energy North America's subsidiary, Neptune LNG LLC, announced today that the Neptune offshore LNG facility has received its Deepwater Port License. Neptune is the first offshore LNG project on the United States' East Coast to reach this milestone. The license will allow Neptune LNG LLC to build, own, and operate the Neptune offshore LNG delivery system in Massachusetts Bay. The Maritime Administration is responsible for issuing a Deepwater Port License under the Deepwater Port Act of 1974. The Neptune project will fill a growing need in Massachusetts and New England as demand for natural gas in New England is expected to increase by 1 to 2% per year over the next two decades, with Massachusetts alone accounting for half of the region's natural gas consumption.

MarAd Oks Plan For Mass. Bay LNG Terminal

Suez Energy North America announced MarAd has agreed to issue a deep water port license for its Neptune offshore liquefied natural gas terminal planned for Massachusetts Bay. The license will be issued after the Neptune project, planned in federal waters about 7 miles south-southeast of Gloucester, receives environmental permits from the Army Corps of Engineers as well as water and air discharge permits from the Environmental Protection Agency. The proposed project must also get two key state environmental permits. That could be done by the middle of this year, a spokeswoman for Suez Energy, which also is the parent company of an onshore LNG terminal in Everett. The federal approval comes a month after former Gov.

Neptune LNG Deepwater Port Project Receives Approval From MarAd

Suez Energy North America's subsidiary, Neptune LNG LLC, announced that the U.S. Maritime Administration (MarAd) has decided to issue a deepwater port license to the company to build, own, and operate the Neptune offshore LNG delivery system in Massachusetts Bay. Neptune is the first offshore LNG project on the United States' East Coast to reach this milestone. The Maritime Administration is responsible for issuing a deepwater port license under the Deepwater Port Act of 1974 ("Act"). The action by the Maritime Administration to approve a license for Neptune, which is included in its Record of Decision for the Project, follows SUEZ's December 13, 2006, commitment to promote employment opportunities for U.S.

SUEZ Announces Agreement With MarAd

SUEZ Energy North America's subsidiary, SUEZ LNG NA LLC announced an agreement with the U.S. Maritime Administration designed to begin generating employment opportunities for U.S. mariners onboard liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels. The transport of LNG between countries to meet natural gas needs is a burgeoning international industry, with the international (privately owned) LNG shipping fleet growing at a rate of 15-20% a year. Today, all LNG ships worldwide are flagged under non-U.S. countries. SUEZ' ships, for example, are flagged primarily under Norway and Spain. As a result, there are no U.S.-licensed mariners on these vessels, and the U.S. shipping industry does not currently share in this growing job market.

Green Light for Offshore LNG

Stuck at the wrong end of North America's natural gas pipelines, Massachusetts has relied on boatloads of liquefied natural gas to supplement pipeline gas for more than 30 years. The need for LNG has spiked in recent years as power producers have turned to this fuel for the region's newest -- and cleanest -- fossil fuel electricity plants. The safest terminals for unloading LNG are offshore, far away from residential neighborhoods, so it is reassuring to see that plans for two such ports are moving ahead. Both would be 8 miles or more from the coast, southeast of Gloucester. The owner of one would be Excelerate Energy of Texas, which for more than a year has been operating an offshore LNG port in the Gulf of Mexico.

Calypso LNG Deepwater Port Application Deemed Complete By Coast Guard

Suez Energy North America's subsidiary, Calypso LNG, LLC has received a letter from the United States Coast Guard deeming complete Calypso's application for a Deepwater Port License. A Notice of Application will be published in the Federal Register which will start a statutory review period for approval of a license to build and operate Calypso's proposed offshore liquefied natural gas facility. On March 1, 2006, Calypso filed a Deepwater Port License Application with the U.S. Coast Guard, which has jurisdiction for the permitting, operation and security for such facilities located in federal waters. The Calypso Deepwater Port is proposed to be located approximately 10 miles offshore from Port Everglades…
