Metal Trades Delivers Construction Barge

Shipbuilder and Heavy Steel Fabricator Metal Trades, Inc., located on Yonges Island, SC has announced the launch of its largest ever built new construction barge. This barge is 370’ x 59’ x 14’. It is designed to hold a total of 18- 60 foot rail cars capable of carrying cargo for up to 2298 Long Tons for New York New Jersey Rail, LLC (NYNJR), a short line railroad and wholly-owned entity of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Metal Trades, Inc. is contracted to build a total of two of these barges and the first of these barges is to be delivered next week.

“There is a resurgence of the marine industry in the Pacific Northwest we haven’t seen for 20 to 30 years now,” said Vince Piscitello, Vice President of Business Development for Vigor Industrial LLC. “The oil and gas industry is really new to our area,” he said, although he expects to see it grow significantly with Shell’s exploration of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas off Alaska’s northern coast. State run ferry operations in Washington and Alaska are at a point where they must renew fleets built in the 50s and 60s.

Continental Receives Star Status From OSHA

PACSHIP Offers Precision Water Jet Cutting

Pacific Ship Repair & Fabrication (PACSHIP) is now offering precision water jet cutting services at its San Diego shipyard and fabrication shop. The ship repair and fabrication contractor is capable of processing complex parts from virtually any material with its new 60,000 psi Jet Edge Mid Rail Gantry water jet cutting system, which features an eight-ft by 13-ft work envelope and is capable of maintaining +/- 0.001 inch linear positional accuracy (over 12 inches) and +/- 0.001 inches repeatability (bi-directional).

Midway Brought Back to Life

Northrop Grumman Corporation helped restore the historic aircraft carrier USS Midway (CVA-41) for the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum. The Midway was built by Northrop Grumman's Newport News sector and delivered to the U.S. Navy in 1945. After serving nearly 50 years, the ship was decommissioned in 1992 and is now being converted into a museum and memorial. Last November, the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum asked all shipyards in the area for support for the Midway project by repairing and restoring three brow platforms and two brows.

New Drydock for PR

San Juan Towing & Marine Services announces the upcoming arrival of the floating dry dock PERSEVERANCE which has been purchased for service in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean Sea and is in the main shipping lanes leading west to the Panama Canal. San Juan Towing & Marine Services is a ship repair contractor that provides a variety of ship repair services in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. The purchase and development of a drydocking facility comes as a second step in order to provide expanded services in the Caribbean. PERSEVERANCE is currently located in New Orleans being upgraded prior to being towed down to San Juan in late October. PERSEVERANCE is a 150 foot long x 70 foot wide drydock capable of lifting vessels of up to 1000 tons.
