Incorrectly Installed Fuel Tubing Led to Containership Fire Off California -NTSB
An incorrectly installed section of main engine fuel oil return tubing led to an engine room fire aboard a containership off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif., the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said Tuesday.Marine Investigation Report 22/15 details the NTSBâs investigation of the April 28, 2021, fire aboard the containership President Eisenhower while transiting through the Santa Barbara Channel. The vessel was transiting to Oakland, California with a crew of 22. The crew extinguished the fire using the engine roomâs fixed carbon dioxide fire-extinguishing system. As a result of the fire, the vessel lost propulsion and drifted for several hours before being towed to the Port of Los Angeles. No pollution or injuries were reported.

Norway Approves PBES Lithium Energy Storage
Plan B Energy Storage (PBES) said its marine energy storage system has received approval for use in electric and hybrid vessels in Norway, having met the new Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) standard. The lithium-ion battery manufacturer PBES, who uses the proprietary CellCool cooling and E-Vent ventilation systems, tested its energy storage system at its Trondheim facility on June 17, 2016. The test attempted to force overcharge the batteries into a thermal runaway situation and was prevented by the PBES safety systems.
Six Suezmax Tankers Earn BV Gas-Prepared Notation
International classification society Bureau Veritas is to grant GAS-PREPARED notation to six Suezmax tankers under construction for Dynacom Tankers Management. The 157,000 dwt tankers will measure 274.3 meters in length, with a beam of 48 meters and depth of 23.2 meters. They are being built at New Times Shipbuilding in China, with delivery expected in 2017 and 2018. The GAS-PREPARED notation sets out requirements for ships which are designed and fitted out for dual-fuel or LNG fuel propulsion, but which are not initially intended to use gas as a fuel. It provides owners with the flexibility to convert easily to dual fuel or LNG fuel propulsion in the future.

Great Lakes Shipyard Performs USCG Drydocking
On April 25, Great Lakes Shipyard hauled out the U.S. Coast Guardâs 125â x 52â Aids to Navigation Barge (12001). Using the Shipyardâs 770-ton Marine Travelift, the yard lifted the 620-ton AToN barge quickly and easily, and placed it on drydocking blocks. Based in Detroit, Mich., the buoy tending crane barge is normally paired with the Ice Breaking Cutter Bristol Bay, and serves as a buoy tender to handle navigation buoys marking shipping lanes of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. The barge will remain in the yard until mid-June under a USCG contract for routine maintenance and repairs.
