Kelvin Hughes to Supply MARCAS with SVDRs

Kelvin Hughes Ltd., part of Smiths Marine Systems, has reached an agreement with MARCAS, The Marine Contracting Association, for the supply of Simplified Voyage Data Recorder (S-VDR) equipment to its membership. The total membership operates in excess of 700 ships. S-VDR equipment is now a mandatory carriage item of equipment for existing cargo vessels of 3,000 Gross Registered Tons and over. Systems must be installed on board ship between July 1, 2006 and July 1, 2010.

Innovations in AIS

Raytheon Marine is broadening its product offering to fulfill the new requirements due to the modification of international regulations. Therefore the company is now offering a SOLAS Class A ship borne AIS Transponder through its worldwide Reseller Network. The new RM 808 AIS, which is Wheelmark Type Approved by BSH, Germany, is produced exclusively by Nauticast Schiffsnavigationssysteme AG, Austria. Nauticast supplies the RM 808 AIS based on its own X-Pack DS design, together with extended warranty and high-end accessories for ease of installation. Marine Data Systems (MDS) has become the first to be granted product approval by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S., for its AIMS MIV Automatic Identification System (AIS).

New Head of Kelvin Hughes Chart Services

Dr. Yiorgos Palierakis has been appointed as director of Charts and Maritime Services, Kelvin Hughes, part of Smiths Marine Systems. He will be based at the London headquarters of Kelvin Hughes. Yiorgos was born and educated in Greece and gained a PhD and an MBA from Bradford University. He is succeeding Roger Gibson who after 23 years with Kelvin Hughes is embarking on a lifetime voyage on board his yacht “Antigua Kiss”. Yiorgos is assuming responsibility of the Charts & Maritime Services Division as this world leading supplier of charts, publications and associated services is rapidly moving into a digital era. His brief is to accelerate the expansion of Kelvin Hughes’ well known services in navigation data as well as its e-business platform of bookharbour.com.
