The world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled bulk carrier, the 50,000 dwt newbuild Ilshin Green Iris, is powered by state-of-the-art technology from MAN Diesel & Turbo. The groundbreaking vessel, delivered in February 2018 for owner Ilshin Logistics, was constructed by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) as part of a project announced in July 2016 to develop the first in a new generation of environmentally-friendly LNG-fueled bulk carriers. Alfa Laval has entered into a patent license agreement with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) for the use of DSME’s patents on high pressure fuel gas supply systems. The agreement signed in March 2015 enables Alfa Laval to further develop the Alfa Laval Fuel Conditioning Modules for use with high pressure gas injection engine technology from MAN Diesel & Turbo. The agreement will see Alfa Laval use DSME patents with Alfa Laval Fuel Conditioning Modules for use on natural gas-powered ships, such as LNG carriers.

SMM was another full success. The recent delivery of the world’s first dual-fuel, low-speed ME-GI engine from Doosan Engine to National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) has set a new, historical milestone in engine technology, say MAN Diesel & Turbo. The 8L70ME-C8.2-GI main engine is aspirated by 2 × TCA66 turbochargers and in addition the ship will receive 3 × 9L28/32DF auxiliary engines, each featuring a single TCR18 turbocharger. A second, identical vessel is currently under construction.

MAN Diesel & Turbo has supplied a complete propulsion system comprising a 7L32/44CR engine, Renk gears and an Alpha adjustable CP propeller for an ultra-modern chemicals tanker operated by GEFO Gesellschaft für Öltransporte mbH. For MAN Diesel & Turbo, the order represents a breakthrough for the 32/44CR series in the small twin-hulled tanker sector of the market. The tanker, christened Fidelio, has a DWT of 6366 and can transport 260 types of (petro-) chemical materials – from vegetable oil to sulfuric acid. The Fidelio’s main routes will be in northern Europe, however the tanker is also equipped for worldwide operation and therefore complies with the strict emissions regulations enforced in US coastal waters.

The low fuel consumption predictions made by engineers from MAN Diesel for the first Blyth 17-metre Workcat have now been confirmed at 130 litres per hour per engine at maximum speed of 26+ knots and 79 litres per hour at cruising speed of 20 knots. The initial computer assessments were made during new boat’s sea trials but these have now been confirmed by two sustained sea voyages. The figures were verified following the new boat’s voyage from Canvey Island to Southampton to attend the Seawork exhibition.

The board of MAN Diesel & Turbo approved the company’s takeover of Kappel propeller,  including designs, software, and intellectual property, together with the continued cooperation of  Jens Julius Kappel. New fuel-saving and energy-efficient propulsion opportunities are available from the MAN Alpha propeller program, which now fully integrates the Kappel tip fin propeller blade designs for both controllable-pitch propellers and fixed-pitch propellers. “We have had a good cooperation with MAN Diesel & Turbo for almost 10 years, and our joint projects have gone well,” said JJ Kappel. “I hope that MAN will get the most out of the Kappel technology.

MAN Diesel has broadened its product portfolio with the development of its new, Type K80ME-C9 two-stroke, low-speed engine. The ME-C9 engine recently passed the final milestone on its way to commercial applications in the marine sector with a successful Type Approval Test (TAT). The first production version of the MAN B&W-branded engine successfully completed its TAT programme at Hyundai’s (HHI-EMD) works in Ulsan, Korea.
