Germany to Skip Tender for Warship Purchase

The German Defence Ministry on Thursday said it would skip an open tender for the planned purchase of five more corvettes valued at 1.5 billion euros and instead ask the three-company consortium that built the existing warships to submit a bid. "The defence ministry has decided to ask the ARGE K130 consortium to bid for procurement of five additional, nearly identical ships," a ministry spokesman said. German lawmakers have criticised the ministry's plans to skip a competition, saying it violated basic procurement principles mapped out by Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen.

Fair Trade Commission Approves Blohm+Voss Acquisition

The German Fair Trade Commission has approved the acquisition of Hamburg shipyard Blohm+Voss GmbH by the Bremen-based, family-owned company Luerssen Maritime Beteiligungen GmbH & Co. KG, a specialty designer, manufacturer and repairer of yachts over 60 meters and military ships. The purchase agreement was signed at the end of September 2016, and now, following the official approval, formal ownership will be transferred from the previous owner, the Funds of the British private equity investor Star Capital Partners.

Family owned and Bremen based shipyard, Luerssen acquired storied shipyard Blohm+Voss in Hamburg, the company announced on Wednesday, September 28, 2016. New Orders for Blohm + Voss Repair

On the February 24, the containership PERU was floated into dock 10 of Blohm + Voss GmbH, a company of ThyssenKrupp Werften. The ship, which is owned by the shipping line Schepers & Co. in Elsfleth and classified by Germanischer Lloyd, has a length of 207.40 m, a beam of 29.80 m and a gross tonnage of 33,014 GRT. The work to be carried out includes repair on the sterntube seal, exchange of steel plates (approx. 1 t of steel) and the replacement of the bow thruster. On March 20, the BANASA, a combined passenger/car ferry of the shipping line Comarit of Morocco, is scheduled to arrive. With a length of 115.35 m, a beam of 20.60 m and a deadweight of 11,668 TDW, the BANASA is classified by Bureau Veritas.

Naval Tech on Display in Kuala Lumpur

Blohm + Voss GmbH will be represented from April 12-15, 2004 at the defence engineering trade fair "Defence Service Asia" (DSA. More than 600 exhibitors from more than 40 countries will be taking part in the DSA in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The DSA is one of the biggest trade fairs for the military technology industry, with more than 17,000 specialist visitors from over 40 countries. Blohm + Voss is presenting itself in Kuala Lumpur with the MEKO®-concept (MEhrzweck-KOmbination - Multi-purpose combination).

Royal Olympic Takes Delivery of Olympia Explorer

Blohm+Voss GMBH delivered of the new fast cruise ship, Olympia Explorer, to Royal Olympic Cruise Lines Inc. The vessel immediately sailed from the Blohm+Voss shipyard to the Port of Piraeus in Greece. The Olympia Explorer, together with her sister ship, Olympia Voyager, are the fastest cruise vessels of their size, performing unique cruises at speeds of up to 30 knots. "The new itineraries Royal Olympic Cruises will offer with this vessel have created considerable interest in the cruise market. The first cruises are already fully booked," added Pantazis. On her maiden voyage on May 3, the Olympia Explorer will start a series of weekly cruises calling at the ports of Piraeus, Corfu, Venice, Dubrovnik, Bari, Katakolon, Istanbul, Mykonos and Santorini.

Targeting Greek Shipping's $16B Budget

Around the world, people involved with shipping are booking flights to Greece and preparing to do business at the Posidonia 2002 International Shipping Exhibition, held on the Piraeus waterfront from June 4-7, 2002. The M-147 Megayacht Makes its Debut

Blohm + Voss GmbH in Hamburg, which has built ships of all variety, shape and size for more than 125 years, has a tradition building megayachts since the mid-1980s. The latest project from its burgeoning stable is the M-147, a 482-ft. (147-m) long luxury yacht, which aims to set new standards in design, outfit and functionality. M-147 was created in collaboration with the designer Hermidas Atabeyki, Paris. His fundamental idea was to develop several thematically different spatial elements instead of long continuous decks and at the same time to retain spaciousness and grand scale. The result is various loggias, balconies, oriels and sun decks.

‘New’ German Shipyard is Underway

With the closing on January 5, 2005, the marriage between ThyssenKrupp Werften and HDW has been formally consummated. This date also marks the official inception of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the new group parent headquartered in Hamburg. Essentially, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems comprises the following subsidiaries: Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH, Kiel; HDW-Nobiskrug GmbH, Rendsburg; Blohm + Voss GmbH und Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH, Hamburg; Nordseewerke GmbH, Emden; as well as Kockums AB, Sweden, and Hellenic Shipyards S.A., Greece. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems represents a sales volume of around €2.2 billion and presently employs a workforce of 9,300. Dr. Klaus Borgschulte chairs the new company as CEO. Ulrich Ziolkowski is its CFO, while Reinhard Kuhlmann heads Human Resources.
