The Dutch company Van der Velden Marine Systems (VDVMS) in conjunction with the U.S. representative Ships Machinery International, Inc. (SMI) has announced the launching of a new Jones Act Articulated Tug Barge (ATB) with BARKE high-lift flap rudders for coastwise service in the U.S. This new design vessel brings increased maneuvering to the fleet of ATB vessels plying U.S. coastal waters. Tank tests prove that for this type of vessel this is the most effective rudder design. This ATB will have enhanced maneuverability and excellent course keeping stability.

BAE Systems delivered its fourth and final of series platform support vessel (PSV) to Jackson Offshore Operators, LLC, completing a four-ship program that began in 2012. Motor Vessel Squall joins three other vessels built by BAE Systems’ Jacksonville, Florida, shipyard to support U.S. offshore oil exploration. Squall is the fourth vessel of the GPA 675J class, designed by Guido Perla and Associates of Seattle. Construction of the 252-ft. vessel began in December 2014 and it was delivered on January 31, 2016.

The Ocean Class Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research (AGOR) vessel hull number 27 started its official life as the R/V Neil Armstrong, the first research vessel named after a space explorer. The ship was designed by Guido Perla and Associates and built at Dakota Creek Industries (DCI). R/V Neil Armstrong will replace the R/V Knorr, in service since 1968, one year before Armstrong’s walk on the moon. The R/V Knorr, AGOR-15, is retiring after logging over one million miles in service to the Navy and WHOI.

Rolls-Royce and GPA most recently teamed up last year to provide a highly innovative design and power & propulsion systems integration solution for two PSVs for Jackson Offshore Operators. Delivery of the first two GPA 675J PSVs, currently under construction at BAE Systems’ shipyard in Jacksonville, Florida, will be made in 2014. The option for two additional vessels of the same type was exercised earlier this year.

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering company Guido Perla and Associates, Inc. (GPA) announced the completion on time and within budget of a major renovation of the fireboat Chief Seattle at Vigor Marine in Everett, Washington. Under the direction of the City of Seattle’s Department of Finance and Administrative Services (FAS), GPA’s team managed the project from initiation to delivery, working closely with FAS, Vigor Marine and the Seattle Fire Department. The 96 feet 6 inches Chief Seattle, built in 1984, replaces the Alki, built in 1927, as the city’s primary freshwater fireboat.

The M/V Susitna is an Office of Naval Research (ONR) platform demonstrating variable geometry/variable draft capability in a twin hull marine vessel. Tests and trials of this first of class vessel will demonstrate its ability to operate as a deep draft, high speed vessel capable of carrying large payloads in high sea states with a stable ride, then transition to a shallow draft, beachable, landing craft mode capable of delivering Expeditionary Forces to the beach. M/V Susitna is an ice strengthened, twin hulled marine vessel.

Guido Perla and Associates, Inc. (GPA), announced that the first GPA 254L AHTS, one of 54 identical vessels for French Maritime Services Provider Bourbon Offshore, is currently under construction at Dayang City Shipyard in . In 2006, Bourbon had placed an order for 26 of the GPA 254L AHTS and had expanded the order in 2007 by 28 additional vessels, which will be built at the new facility in . The  design of this modern D2-and FIFI1- certified offshore AHTS, measuring 59.78 meters in overall length, is accompanied by several benefits and will set new operation mode in anchor handling.

(GPA) said that Kvichak Marine, a Seattle-Based designer and builder of aluminum vessels, has launched a Fast Pilot Boat for which GPA provided total production engineering for the construction of the hull, piping, propulsion, outfitting and electrical systems. The Pilot Boat, measuring 22 m long, is an all welded aluminum monohull of significant deadrise with a double chine. The M/V Bourbon was issued a United States Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation (COD) for coastwise trade in the United States and is fully classed by the American Bureau of Shipping for international operations. The M/V Bourbon was immediately deployed to a major oil company for work in the Gulf of Mexico after its christening by Mrs. Maxine Rigdon, mother of Larry Rigdon.

Derecktor Shipyards delivered its 299 ft. (91 m) high speed catamaran, Flying Cloud, to Woods Hole & Martha's Vineyard Steamship Authority. Completed one week ahead of schedule, the vessel will be used for year-round passenger and vehicle ferry service to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Attaining an excess of 39 knots during sea trials, Flying Cloud demonstrated high stability and ride comfort due to its dynamic ride control system. Its service speed of 36 knots will allow the ferry to cross from Hyannis Port to Nantucket Island in less than one hour - significantly lower than the conventional two hour crossing time. Flying Cloud is powered by Paxman 12VP185 diesel engines driving Kamewa 71SII waterjets.

Ten years ago, a RoRo passenger service called Sealink, commenced in the Bahamas — operating from Nassau to port of Governor's Harbor on the adjacent island of Eleuthera. The vessel that performed this service was an aging 14-knot Greek ferry, which established a solid market within the RoRo sector. Despite its healthy growth spurt, the venture ceased in 1993 resulting from rising repair costs and maintenance, specifically in the machinery department, as some engine parts had since been discontinued. Then a group of local businessmen purchased an Australian RoPax catamaran to re-enter the Eleuthera trade. This vessel, which incidentally is also named Sealink, is from the Sea Transport Solutions (STS) design studio in Queensland, Australia.

Crowley Marine Services delivered Alert, Attentive, and Aware, a series of three 140-ft., 10,000-hp Prevention and Response Tugs (PRTs), to Alyeska Pipeline Service Company in Valdez, Alaska. Specifically designed and developed for Alyeska, the boats will be used by Crowley in the Trans Alaska Pipeline System trade. Alert was deployed in February; Attentive was delivered in June, and Aware was delivered in July.

Larry T. Rigdon, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rigdon Marine, announced that the third of its 10 platform supply vessels — MV Royal — was christened and delivered for service. Royal was immediately deployed to begin work in the Gulf of Mexico. Mrs. Mathilde Currence, the wife of Richard Currence Jr., Vice President, Operations christened the Royal at Bender Shipbuilding & Repair Company., Inc. of Mobile, Alabama. Royal joins the company's two other vessels, the Bourbon and the Orleans, which are also working in the Gulf of Mexico. "We are extremely pleased that drilling and seismic companies with operations in the Gulf of Mexico have vetted our vessels as being the most cost effective and operationally efficient ships available today," said Rigdon.

While thoughts of the majority of men his age are turning to 401K values and retirement, Rigdon decided to design and build a fleet of ten 210- x 54- x 19-ft. diesel-electric platform supply vessels, vessels designed to offer the offshore market an unprecedented level of performance via an adherence to top technical specification.

Jamestown Metal Marine Sales, Inc. has been awarded a contract by Blue Chip Casino, LLC, a subsidiary of Boyd Gaming, to construct a new casino vessel at Blue Chip's Michigan City, Indiana facility. The new vessel, which will replace the present vessel, will be approximately 400 ft. in length with a beam of 200 feet and provide about 75,000 square feet of gaming area on a single deck. In addition to the gaming area there will be another 85,000 square feet of back of house and future gaming areas on other decks. Jamestown was selected by Blue Chip Casino for this high visibility project based on Jamestown's significant experience outfitting casino vessels and managing other turnkey marine construction projects. This will be Jamestown's 26th casino project.

Guido Perla and Associates (GPA), announced the delivery of the M/V Hector, the fourth of ten GPA 670 Platform Support Vessels (PSV) designed by the company for Bourbon Offshore of Marseille, France, a division of Bourbon. The M/V HECTOR marks the last of four vessels originally ordered by Bourbon Offshore, who has expanded the GPA 670 building program to a total of 10 vessels, which will be built at Zhejiang Shipbuilding in Ningbo, China. The GPA 670 PSVs are 240-ft diesel-electric vessels, which are equipped with two stern-mounted Kawazaki KST-200 360 degree azimuthing Z-drive, fixed pitch, 1,200 rpm powered, full range variable speed motors. A further enhancement to the diesel-electric drives is the dynamic positioning system and the vessel management.

Guido Perla, Chairman of Guido Perla and Associates, announced the delivery of the M/V Stikine, a 197-ft. passenger-vehicle ferry, to Inter-Island Ferry Authority (IFA) for its new northern route between Prince of Wales Island’s Coffman Cove, Wrangell, and Petersburg terminals in Southeast Alaska. “GPA provided the construction engineering for the first IFA ferry, M/V Prince of Wales in 2001, and, ultimately, was hired as the owners’ naval architect for the design development for the similar M/V Stikine. GPA continued to act as the owner’s representative throughout vessel construction at Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes, WA. Trico Marine Services is building two of the well-proven GPA 640 class DP2 equipped platform supply vessels at Bender Shipyards in Mobile Alabama. As with others of these Guido Perla and Associates designed vessels, main propulsion will be diesel electric. Each boat will employ three diesel-powered generators including two 1,825 kW (2,447 hp) generators powered by 16-cylinder Cummins QSK60 D(M) engines and one 910 kW (1,220 hp) generator powered by a Cummins KTA38 D(M) engine. This engine configuration has demonstrated excellent flexibility and fuel savings as one or more of the generators can be shut down for stand-by or slower moving operations such as seismic or cable laying that are often required of this type of vessel. The first of the 210 x 54 x 19-ft.

The first of 10 new Rigdon GPA-654 platform supply vessels, appropriately named First and Ten, has been delivered from Bollinger Shipyards in Louisiana. Another 22 of the vessels of the same 190-foot design are on order by Bourbon Offshore from a Chinese yard. As with earlier Guido Perla-designed supply vessels, the diesel-electric propulsion power in these vessels is being supplied by Cummins Mid-South LLC of Kenner Louisiana. For these vessels the diesel electric package consist of two Cummins KTA-50DM1-powered1235 KW and one Cummins KTA-19DM1-powered 425 KW main propulsion generators and one 6BTA5.9G-85 KW SOLAS emergency standby generator.
