RAL's 3 RAstar 3300 Tugs for GPHA

Canadian naval architectural firm Robert Allan Ltd (RAL) announced that  the TOR Group  shipyard in Tuzla Bay (Istanbul) has delivered the Ben Owusu-Mensah, the third of three RAstar 3300 tugs for Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority (GPHA).The new tugs are equipped to fulfill a multitude of missions for the GPHA, including but not limited to ship-assist, fire-fighting, and pollution response, said a press release from the ship designer."Driven by high speed engines and Z-drive propellers, the Ben Owusu-Mensah and its sisters comfortably meet all contractual performance requirements, including the achievement of 82 tonnes of bollard pull and speeds in excess of 14 knots on trial…

Saam Smit Towage Adds Escort Tug Duo

Saam Smit Towage Canada (SST Canada) has purchased two new RAstar 3200 escort tugs from Hong Kong’s Cheoy Lee Shipyards.SST Grizzly and SST Orca, which are designed by Robert Allan Ltd, has departed Cheoy Lee’s Hin Lee shipyard, will arrive Vancouver in early November of this year.The two new escort-rated tugs will join SST Canada’s fleet and begin operations in the southern waters of British Columbia. Lessons Learned from the El Faro Casualty

The U.S. Coast Guard has issued an alert informing operators of the role that the main propulsion lube oil system was found to have played in the 2015 sinking of U.S. cargo ship El Faro. All 33 crew on board died when the 790-foot El Faro sank close to the eye of Hurricane Joaquin near the Bahamas on October 1, 2015, while en route from Jacksonville, Fla. to Puerto Rico. Loss of propulsion during extremely heavy weather was revealed as a major contributing factor to the vessel’s sinking, according to The Coast Guard Marine Board Report on the incident.

ESG Awarded LLTM for USCG Offshore Patrol Cutter Program

The U.S. Coast Guard has awarded Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) a Long Lead Time Material (LLTM) contract for the first Offshore Patrol Cutter, USCGC Argus (WMSM 915). The LLTM contract awarded on September 7, 2017 allows Eastern to move forward on an aggressive schedule to deliver a capable and affordable platform to meet the Coast Guard’s mission needs. Crew Supply Vessel Delivered in Louisiana

Lady Tierney, a 205-foot monohull DP-2 crew supply vessel, has been delivered for Sea Supply, Inc., a B&J Martin Inc. subsidiary, of Galliano, Louisiana. With design expertise from Incat Crowther’s Lafayette, La. office, combined with concept design and standards from the Morgan City, La. based Halimar Shipyard and the vessel owner, the ABS-classed, USCG-certified vessel will work in the Gulf of Mexico’s deep water offshore industry. For transportation of supplies, Lady Tierney features an aft cargo deck comprising of 3,950 square feet of timber covered area with a capacity of 450 LT.

Two Ramparts Class Tugs for Signet Maritime

In the summer of this year, Signet Maritime took delivery of Signet Arcturus & Signet Polaris, the eighth and ninth tugs designed for them by Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, Canada to add to its fleet of 37 conventional and ASD vessels. The tugs were constructed at Patti Marine Enterprises in Pensacola, Florida. The tugs are based on the Signet Weatherly design, but with additional power and higher bollard pull. The vessels are intended for multidisciplinary work including offshore support, towing, ship-assist, ship escort, subsea and rig moves.

Almi Sky

Almi Sky was built for Almi Tankers S.A. by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, designed as double skinned construction in way of cargo tanks and arranged with six pairs of cargo tanks and a pair of slop tanks. Marine Safety Alert: Fuel Switching Safety

A Marine Safety Alert was issued to increase awareness and reiterate general guidance on fuel systems and fuel switching safety in an effort to prevent propulsion losses. After a noted decrease, there has been a recent increase in the number of reported loss of propulsion incidents on deep draft vessels within the Eleventh Coast Guard District. Coast Guard studies and review of marine casualties indicate that lack of maintenance and testing of certain systems, including fuel oil systems, is one of the leading causes of propulsion failures. Advanced planning and careful fuel system management are critical to safely switching fuels. This is especially important if fuel switching is not routine practice.

First RAstar 3200 Tugs from Robert Allan Ltd.

In late February, 2009, the RAstar 3200 Class tug Monterrey was delivered to the Owners Servicios Marítimos de Baja California, S. de R.L de C.V. of Mexico by the builders Union Naval Valencia (UNV) of Valencia, Spain. Servicios Marítimos de Baja California, S. de R.L de C.V. is a joint venture between Moran Towing of the USA and Grupo Boluda of Spain. This tug is the first of four expressly designed to work at the Costa Azul LNG terminal on the north-west coast of Mexico, at a terminal exposed to fully developed Pacific swells.

New RAmparts 3200 Class Tugs

In late December, 2008 Shipco Marine Constructors Ltd. of Whangarei, New Zealand delivered the first of two new terminal support tugs, the Pilbara Thor to the Owners, Rio Tinto of Australia for service at the Pilbara ore terminal near Dampier, Australia. The vessel entered service in January. The Pilbara Thor is the latest of the RAmparts 3200 Class tugs to be built to this widely accepted design from Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver, B.C. Robert Allan Ltd. worked with the Owner's representatives, Trevor Cosh of Trevor Cosh and Associates Pty Ltd.

New RAmparts 3200B Design

For several years Sanmar Denizcilik Makin eve Ticaret Ltd., of Istanbul, Turkey have been building a successful line of RAmparts 3200 Class tugs, to a design by Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver, B.C. Can the Hinge Ship Work?

Hinge-Ship is a patented concept designed to combine the advantages of both deep draft and shallow draft shipping within the confines of a single vessel. The concept, if proven viable, could help to further the mandate of shaving valuable time from the transportation of goods from "point A to point B," as it would literally eliminate the need for storage at transshipment points and the transfer of cargo to other vessels, and all of the time and cost inherent in both. Wärtsilä Powers New Bay-class Landing Ships

Wärtsilä Corporation has received the contract to supply the diesel generating sets for two new Bay-class Alternative Landing Ships Logistic (ALSL) building for the UK RFA. The four main diesel-generating sets in each ship will be powered by Wärtsilä 26 diesel engines: each ship having two Wärtsilä 8L26 and two Wärtsilä 12V26 engines. Wärtsilä will also deliver an emergency diesel generating set to each ship. Additional ship sets for a further two vessels to be built at BAE Systems Govan yard will also be supplied subject to pending optional contract. The first two ships, newbuilding numbers 141 and 142, are to be built at Swan Hunter (Tyneside) Ltd in the UK. The twin-screw vessels will have diesel-electric propulsion.
