Fire on Italian-Flagged Ship at Port of Newark Leaves Two Firefighters Dead

Two firefighters died in a tragic incident at the Port of Newark, New Jersey, in an attempt to extinguish a fire that broke out 9:30 pm, (EST) on the ro/ro vessel Grande Costa d’Avorio, operated by Grimaldi Deep Sea, a subsidiary of the Grimaldi Group. Ferry Runs Aground in New York

A ferry ran aground with 118 passengers and seven crew-members aboard in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Saturday evening.Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York command center received a report that the 150-foot Seastreak ferry Commodore ran aground and was taking on water in Bushwick Inlet near the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, at approximately 4:17 p.m.The ferry, which runs routes between New York and New Jersey, lost power and steering and began drifting before striking ground, operator Seastreak said. The vessel was traveling from Highlands, N.J., to East 35th Street in Manhattan.

Disabled Freighter Towed into New York Harbor

The U.S. Coast Guard coordinated the tow of a disabled 611-foot freighter into the port of New York and New Jersey after it lost propulsion over 100 miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday, August 21.At around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York received a report that the Panama-flagged bulk carrier GDF Suez North Sea with 21 crew aboard, was disabled. Barge Runs Aground near New York

A barge has run aground in Coney Island Channel near Brighton Beach, N.Y., Wednesday morning.At approximately 9 a.m., a tug, the Eastern Dawn, was pushing the barge Port Chester when it ran soft aground near Coney Island Channel Buoy 3.The tug and barge crew confirmed there were 14,000 barrels of fuel oil on board the barge and reported no pollution.Crewmembers from U.S. Coast Guard Station New York responded to ensure the safety of the barge and surrounding vessel traffic.Pollution response teams and investigation officials from Coast Guard Sector New York were also on scene to assess the incident and confirmed no fuel entered the water.The barge Port Chester was able to refloat during high tide at approximately 2:30 p.m., and arrived at its destination in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y.

Coast Guard, Partner Agencies Respond to NYC Ferry Grounding

Coast Guard and partner agency crews responded to a ferry aground with 27 people aboard near Rockaway Inlet, New York, Wednesday evening. The Flyer, an 80-foot New York City Ferry became stuck on a sandbar after departing from the Rockaway terminal at 5:15 p.m., en route to Wall Street’s Pier 11 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Boatcrews from Coast Guard Station New York, and Station Sandy Hook arrived on scene with New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and New York City Police Department (NYPD) marine units. Due to shallow water, Coast Guard crews were unable to safely approach the ferry. An FDNY crew evacuated 23 passengers and a crewmember safely and placed them aboard one of their rescue boats. All passengers were transferred to the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Brooklyn, New York.

NYC Ferry Strikes a Group of Kayakers

A New York Waterways ferry struck a group of kayakers on the Hudson River Tuesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Five of the 11 kayakers were transported to Bellevue Hospital and Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital for additional medical attention, and two were listed in critical condition. Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector New York received a call from the master aboard the ferry Jersey City at approximately 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, reporting a collision between the ferry and the group of kayakers near Pier 79 in Manhattan. A Coast Guard Station New York smallboat crew was launched and arrived on scene to assist New York Police Department, New York Fire Department and Jersey City Fire Department officials with rescuing the 11 kayakers from the water.

Crane Collapse at Tappan Zee Bridge Spurs USCG Response

Coast Guard crews are enforcing a safety zone on the Hudson River around the Tappan Zee Bridge after a crane collapsed Tuesday afternoon. At approximately 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, Coast Guard Sector New York received a report of a partial crane collapse across the western end of the Tappan Zee Bridge, which has closed the roadway to traffic for an undetermined period of time. A crane operator was safely recovered from the water by a Westchester County Marine unit after the collapse. A Smallboat crew from Coast Guard Station New York is enforcing a safety zone around the site of the incident and will remain in place for as long as necessary.

Tugboat Hits Barge, Sinks Near Tappan Zee Bridge

The U.S.Coast Guard reports that it and local partner agency crews are searching for two people in the water after a tugboat struck a barge and sank near the Tappan Zee Bridge Saturday (March 12) morning. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York received notification at 5:20 a.m., Saturday of the 90-foot tugboat Specialist, striking a barge and sinking with three people aboard near the Tappan Zee Bridge. Coast Guard Station New York launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew to search for the three people in the water. At approximately 5:30 a.m. one person was recovered by a first responder in the area and transported ashore to awaiting EMS crews.

Search for Containership Crewman Suspended

The search for a crew member missing from a containership between Bayonne, N.J. and Ocean City, Md. was suspended, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. The crew member was last reported aboard the 600-foot, Marshall Islands flagged freight ship Ibrahim Dede after departing Bayonne. The crew discovered the man was missing while the ship was in transit to its next port, notifying Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Hampton Roads at approximately 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. A Coast Guard Station New York 45-Foot Response Boat crew, a Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City H-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and an Air Station Elizabeth City C-130 Hercules airplane crew searched for the crewman from 4:30 p.m. Tuesday to 3:30 p.m.

Fleet Week: New York Parade of Ships 2014

U.S. Navy ships and U.S. Coast Guard cutters, Station New York and Maritime Safety and Security Team New York, along with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York Police Harbor units and Fire Department of New York’s fireboat participated in the 2014 Fleet Week New York Parade of Ships, which took place in New York Harbor, today. Participating military ships included the Harpers Ferry-class dock landing ship USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), Arleigh Burke-class destroyers USS Cole (DDG 67 and USS McFaul (DDG 74), and U.S. Coast Guard cutters Campbell (WMEC 909), Katherine Walker (WLM 552), Thunder Bay (WTGB 108), and Sailfish (WPB 87356). Fleet Week New York, now in its 26th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services.

Securing Super Bowl XLVIII

New York-based Coast Guard units are no strangers when it comes to assisting with large-scale events in the area, but for the first time in history, area crews put in a team effort alongside local New York and New Jersey authorities to safeguard a Super Bowl event. Having provided security for the United Nations General Assembly, Macy’s Fourth of July Firework display, Fleet Week and the NYC Marathon in previous years, the opportunity for the Coast Guard’s assets to assist with Super Bowl XLVIII was also a success. “We’re here to protect our citizens,” said Lt. The U.S. Coast Guard received a report of a barge taking on water in the vicinity of New York Harbor, today. At approximately 12:17 p.m., a communication watchstander at Coast Guard Sector New York received notification from the commercial tug Patricia that the barge it’s pushing was taking on water. A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station New York, Cutter Hawser and New York Police Department’s Harbor unit conducted dewatering operations and escorted the vessel to Claremont, N.J. The barge is carrying 400 tons of recycled plastic. There are no reports of pollution from the barge.

Coast Guard, NTSB Investigating NYC Ferry Allision

Coast Guard, partner agencies respond to ferry allision in Manhattan. The Coast Guard is responding to an allison that occurred at the Pier 11 ferry terminal in Manhattan, N.Y. Fifty-seven injuries have been reported after the ferry Seastreak allided with the pier at 8:45 a.m. Two rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station New York, along with FDNY and NYPD are responding to the scene. An investigation team from Coast Guard Sector New York is also responding. Drug and alcohol testing is being conducted in accordance with federal regulation.

Staten Island Ferry Strikes St. George Terminal

A team of Coast Guard investigators and inspectors was on scene at the Staten Island Ferry terminal after a ferry struck the pier around 9:30 a.m. on May 8. The ferry boat Andrew J. Barberi reportedly lost propulsion and struck the pier, resulting in serious damage to the facility's ramps and the main decks of the boat above the waterline. There were 252 passengers and 18 crew members onboard at the time of incident. There have been reports of minor injuries. There have been no reports of pollution. A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station New York was also on scene after the incident. The New York Port Authority prepared to move the ferry to a different slip while the investigation is being conducted.

New SAR Boat – CG Station NY

Members of the media were invited to participate in the launch and get underway on a new law enforcement and search and rescue vessel at Coast Guard Station New York on Staten Island Friday, Dec. 19, 2008 at 10 a.m. The 45-foot Response Boat – Medium (RB-M) was delivered to Coast Guard Station New York on Dec. 11, 2008 and is the third initiative in the Response Boats 2010 strategic vision and transition plan. “If you look at the 41-foot and 45-foot vessels side by side, you can definitely see that our new response boat is much more advanced,” said Lt. Patrick Gallagher, Station New York’s executive officer. “The vessel is much faster and more maneuverable, has integrated communications and easier access to Coast Guard systems.

Oil Spill Near East Newark, NJ

An estimated 1,000 gallons of biodiesel oil is reported to have spilled into a catch basin near East Newark, NJ, on the Passaic River at about 5:30 a.m. March 26. Coast Guard Sector New York received a report from the National Response Center (NRC) that Innovation Fuels Inc. reported the spill had occurred during an internal transfer and that the source of the release had been secured. None of the product was reported to have reached the water. Biodiesel oil is a non-petroleum based diesel fuel similar to vegetable oil or animal fat. Kens Marine has been contracted to clean up the spill and have deployed preventative boom around the area.

CG Responds to Increased Security Zone Violations

The U.S. Coast Guard has responded to an increased number of security zone violations around bridge abutments within the past month in New York Harbor. Coast Guard Sector New York and Station New York watchstanders have deployed several boarding teams in recent weeks to interdict boaters who were inside the 25-yard security zone around bridge abutments. The Coast Guard would like to remind boaters in New York Harbor that the 25-yard area around bridge abutments remains a restricted part of the waterway. If a boat violates the security zone, the Coast Guard will first notify them via marine band radio and may possibly board the boat to ensure compliance.

CG Investigates Tanker Ship in Gravesend Bay

The Coast Guard is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a tanker ship in Gravesend Bay that ruptured a tank around 9 a.m, Jan. 10. The tank was overfilled in the process of on-loading ethanol, which resulted in the rupture, according to Coast Guard marine inspectors. “Our paramount concern is for the safety of the crew still onboard the vessel and they will not commence any nighttime operations,” said Cmdr. David Flaherty, Coast Guard Sector New York’s incident commander. “The vessel is currently listing at about six degrees, and the vessel’s crew will not attempt to correct the issue until there is enough light tomorrow.
