2013 World Maritime Day Theme Launched

IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu has launched this year's World Maritime Day theme, "Sustainable development: IMO's contribution beyond Rio+20", calling on Governments and the shipping industry to join together and provide a positive contribution towards formulating sustainable maritime development goals. Speaking at a reception to mark the launch of the theme, at the end of the first day of the 56th session of the Sub-Committee on Fire Protection (FP), Mr. Sekimizu said that, as the United Nations' international regulatory body for shipping, IMO has been, and continues to be, the focal point for, and the driving force behind, efforts to ensure that the industry becomes greener and cleaner.

Intertanko Says Simplify Inert Gas Regs

The catastrophic incidents on a significant number of small product tankers and chemical tankers, some of which have led to a tragic loss of life, have highlighted the fact that the industry needs to update the current application of inert gas regulations to new oil and chemical tankers. New SOLAS Regulations Go into Effect

Amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) affecting many aspects of ship safety go into effect on July 1, including a new revised SOLAS chapter on fire protection, fire detection and fire extinction, amendments to chapters II-1, IX and X (to make a new High-Speed Craft Code mandatory) and record of equipment attached to safety certificates. A revised SOLAS chapter II-2 (Construction - Fire protection, fire detection and fire extinction) enters into force, which also makes a new International Code for Fire Safety Systems (FSS Code) mandatory.
