USCG, Paramedic Assist Man off Cape Fear

Coast Guard Oak Island crew members and a Brunswick County paramedic came to the aid of an ailing man Wednesday aboard a charter fishing vessel approximately 15 miles southeast of the Cape Fear River entrance. Personnel at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received notification from the 25-foot charter vessel with five people on board Wednesday about noon stating a 35-year-old male passenger with heart problems was in and out of consciousness approximately 28 miles southeast of the Cape Fear River entrance. A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat (MLB) crew from Station Oak Island launched first and a 29-foot Response Boat-Small (RBS) from Station Oak Island later launched after taking aboard a Brunswick County paramedic.

Update: Bald Head Island Ferry Salvage

The U.S. Coast Guard is monitoring salvage attempts Wednesday of the Bald Head Island Ferry Adventure, which ran aground Tuesday in the vicinity of Battery Island near Southport, N.C. Personnel from Bald Head Island Transportation attempted to refloat the Adventure at approximately 10:30 a.m. Wednesday during high tide without success. The owner of Bald Head Island Transportation is working to submit a salvage plan of the Adventure for Coast Guard approval before any additional action is taken.

Silver Ships Delivers Patrol Boats to NC Sheriffs

Silver Ships, Inc. recently delivered two 27’ Patrol Boats to the New Hanover and Brunswick County Sheriff’s Departments. The vessels will be tasked with patrolling the Intracoastal Waterways, the Cape Fear River and coastal waters as well as the surrounding estuaries and barrier islands within the jurisdiction of the New Hanover & Brunswick Counties, North Carolina. The 27-foot, deep vee, vessels were designed and configured to meet the mission requirements for extended patrol, emergency response and fast pursuit when necessary.

New USACE Contract

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co., Inc., Oak Brook, Ill., was awarded on Nov. 23, 2009 a $20,143,303 firm-fixed-price contract for the beach re-nourishment for Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Ocean Isle Beach and maintenance dredging of Masonboro Intel and Sand Bypassing, Brunswick County, N. C.  Work is to be performed in Brunswick County, N.C., with an estimated completion date of Apr. 30, 2010.  Bids were solicited on the World Wide Web with two bids received.  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, Wilmington, N.C., is the contracting activity (W912HN-10-C-0005).

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co., Inc., Oak Brook, Ill., was awarded on Nov. 18, 2009, a $5,559,750 firm-fixed-price contract for the maintenance dredging, Wilmington Harbor Outer Ocean Bar, Brunswick County, North Carolina.  Work is to be performed in Brunswick County, N.C., with an estimated completion date of April 30, 2010.  Bids were solicited on the World Wide Web with two bids received.  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, Wilmington Office, Savannah, Ga., is the contracting activity (W912HN-10-C-0004).
