BAE Systems Investing in San Diego

A discussion with Bob Koerber, General Manager, BAE Systems Ship Repair, San Diego, Calif. Bob Koerber, general manager of BAE Systems Ship Repair in San Diego, served on active duty as a surface warfare officer from 1981 to 1987, then continued to serve as a Navy Reservist, retiring as a captain in 2007. His last reserve assignment was as the Deputy Commander of Naval Special Warfare Command. As a SWO he served aboard USS Hull (DD 945?) and USS Brooke (FFG 1). He has been employed by the San Diego yard for 27 years. What’s new here in San Diego? A lot of good things happening in the yard.

Joe Kernan, Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy (Ret.) has recently been appointed to the Board of Advisors of Swiftships Shipbuilders, LLC, a leading supplier of military and commercial watercraft to clients across the globe. Vice Admiral Kernan (Ret.) served in various leadership positions in the Department of Defense, which included Commanding Officer, SEAL Team Two, Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command, Commander US Fourth Fleet, and Senior Military Assistant to former Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates.

Seaway Corp Infrastructure Renewal Funding

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC) will initiate its planned 10-year program this year to modernize the infrastructure of the U.S. portion of the St. Lawrence Seaway, following President Obama’s signing on March 11 of the omnibus appropriations bill to fund the federal government for the remainder of fiscal year 2009. The bill includes a total of $31.8m for the Seaway, which serves the Great Lakes region of North America. The enacted funding includes more than $17m allocated to 17 projects under the Seaway’s Asset Renewal Program (ARP). A significant amount of the ARP funding in FY 2009 will benefit the regional economy surrounding the two U.S. locks in Massena, N.Y. “After 50 years of continuous use, the U.S.

Marie named “Honorary Frogman”

J.J. Marie, ADM Bonelli, and Jack Lynch, UDT-SEAL Association President.

At 10:00 AM on July 19, 2008, Zodiac of North America, Inc. President and CEO, J.J. Marie, became the newest SEAL in the United States Navy. Rear Admiral Garry J. Bonelli, Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command, presented Marie the certificate during the East Coast SEAL Reunion Breakfast/Business Meeting at the Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek. Only 175 people have been named "Honorary SEALs" in nearly 50 years. Marie received a standing ovation from the 200-plus in attendance for his ardent support of the Naval Special Warfare community.

Navy Reestablishes U.S. Fourth Fleet

Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Gary Roughead announced today the reestablishment of U.S. 4th Fleet and assigned Rear Adm. Joseph D. Kernan, currently serving as Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command, as its first commander. 4th Fleet will be responsible for U.S. Navy ships, aircraft and submarines operating in the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) area of focus, which encompasses the Caribbean, and Central and and the surrounding waters. Located in , , and dual-hatted with Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (COMUSNAVSO), 4th Fleet reestablishment addresses the increased role of maritime forces in the SOUTHCOM area of focus, and demonstrates commitment to regional partners.

Navy, USCG Join Forces For Homeland Security

Admiral Robert Natter, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and Vice Adm. Thad Allen, Commander of the Coast Guard Atlantic Area, jointly announced the assignment of four Cyclone-Class Navy Patrol Coastal (PC) ships in support of the nation’s homeland security Operation Noble Eagle. Two additional PCs will be assigned to the Pacific Coast. For the first time, U.S. Navy ships will be employed jointly with the U.S. Coast Guard to help protect our nation’s coastline, ports and waterways from terrorist attack. “The Atlantic Fleet is working closely with the Coast Guard to ensure the security of our Gulf and east coast ports,” said Admiral Natter. “These ships will be used for coastal patrol and interdiction efforts with the Coast Guard.

Brown Water Veterans Honored

At a ceremony to honor Vietnam veterans, service members and their families observe a Vietnam Memorial Monument on board Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. The ceremony was held to honor Navy and Coast Guard personnel who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. U.S. By Journalist 3rd Class Cynthia R. SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- A monument dedicated to Navy and Coast Guard veterans who fought and died supporting brown water and other naval operations in Vietnam was unveiled May 21 at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. More than 700 people attended the unveiling of the 66 feet-long and 8 feet-tall monument, which displayed 26 panels listing the names, ranks, hometowns, units and dates of death of all the veterans who took part in brown water operations in Vietnam from 1960 to 1975.

News: Littoral Combat Ship Takes One Step Closer to Reality

The push for a new class of U.S. Navy ships, vessels able to operate in shallow draft, near to shore environments, has taken a step closer to reality. The Navy is currently reviewing plans from half a dozen teams, and is expected next month to award additional dollars to three teams for further refinement. Current plans call for a fleet of between 50 and 70 vessels — smaller, faster and considerably cheaper than ships built for today’s Navy — ready for production in the next few years.
