NTSB Investigates Fatal Water Taxi Accident
Immediately following the capsizing of a water-taxi, the Lady D, in Baltimore's Inner Harbor on Saturday, March 6, 2004, National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Ellen Engleman Conners launched a Go Team to the site of the accident to conduct the on-scene phase of the investigation. The Safety Board is leading the investigation and receiving assistance from several parties. The National Transportation Safety Board's Investigator-In- Charge, Bill Woody, has designated the following parties to the investigation of the Lady D capsizing in Baltimore Harbor: the U.S. Coast Guard; Living Classrooms Foundation (owner of the Lady D); and the City of Baltimore Fire Department.

Safety Board Determines Cause of SI Ferry Accident
The National Transportation Safety Board today determined that the probable cause of a fatal accident involving a Staten Island ferry was the assistant captain's unexplained incapacitation and the failure of the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) to implement and oversee safe, effective operating procedures for its ferries. On October 15, 2003, the Staten Island ferry Andrew J. Barberi, owned and operated by the NYC DOT, was at the end of a regularly scheduled trip from Manhattan to Staten Island when it struck a maintenance pier at the Staten Island Ferry terminal. Fifteen crewmembers and an estimated 1,500 passengers were on board. Ten passengers died in the accident and 70 were injured.

The Senate Commerce Committee has approved a number of nominations, including Ellen Engleman to be a Member and Chairman of the NTSB, Richard Healing and Mark Rosenker to be Members of the NTSB, Jeffrey Shane to be Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy, and Emil Frankel to be Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy. NTSB on Hand for Norway Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board is launching a Go-Team to investigate the fire aboard the cruise ship NORWAY in Miami, Florida. About 7:00 am today, the Norwegian Cruise line vessel NORWAY experienced an engine room fire while moored in Port of Miami. There were 3,400 passengers and 1000 crew. According to information received from the cruise line four crewmember were fatally injured and 15 were seriously injured. No reports of any passenger injuries at this time. Robert Ford, the Investigator-in-Charge, heads the 10-member team. Member Carol Carmody will accompany the team and serve as principal spokesperson. Chairman Ellen Engleman and two Public Affairs Officers, Keith Holloway and Paul Schlamm are also accompanying the Safety Board's team.
