Kongsberg Tech Package for Sweden’s New Subs

The Swedish Navy together with SAAB Kockums AB has selected an active sonar suite and bottom navigation technology from Kongsberg Maritime for installation on two next generation A26 submarines, which are due for delivery no later than 2022. The contract was awarded through a competitive international tender process and follows a 2015 contract win covering similar systems for two Swedish Navy A19 submarines. Status Report: Lightweight Structures at Sea

SP Fire Technology’s involvement in fire-resistant lightweight materials for marine applications has contributed to the construction of several smaller lightweight vessels, and to the current discussion within the International Maritime Organization (IMO) of how larger ocean-going vessels could be built using plastic composites. 2005 saw the start of the LÄSS project, which clearly showed the potential economic and environmental benefits of using lightweight materials such as aluminum or fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite for the construction of ships.

Northrop Grumman Upgrades Swedish Subs

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has won a contract to upgrade the inertial navigation systems (INS) for the Swedish navy’s submarines. Under the contract, awarded by Kockums AB, Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine unit will supply five MK 39 Mod 3C ring laser gyro systems for installation on two Gotland-class and two Södermanland-class submarines, with one set to be used for spares and training. The MK 39 Mod 3C systems will replace the existing spinning mass gyrocompasses currently fitted on the submarines. CA Clase AB, Sperry Marine’s sales and service representative in Sweden, was instrumental in securing the order. Kockums AB will perform the installations, which will be completed by 2011.

‘New’ German Shipyard is Underway

With the closing on January 5, 2005, the marriage between ThyssenKrupp Werften and HDW has been formally consummated. This date also marks the official inception of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the new group parent headquartered in Hamburg. Essentially, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems comprises the following subsidiaries: Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH, Kiel; HDW-Nobiskrug GmbH, Rendsburg; Blohm + Voss GmbH und Blohm + Voss Repair GmbH, Hamburg; Nordseewerke GmbH, Emden; as well as Kockums AB, Sweden, and Hellenic Shipyards S.A., Greece. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems represents a sales volume of around €2.2 billion and presently employs a workforce of 9,300. Dr. Klaus Borgschulte chairs the new company as CEO. Ulrich Ziolkowski is its CFO, while Reinhard Kuhlmann heads Human Resources.

Northrop Grumman and Kockum/ HDW Partner Up

Northrop Grumman Corporation has signed a cooperative agreement with Kockums AB and its parent company, Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft AG (HDW), under which Kockums will join a team assembled by Northrop Grumman's Ship Systems sector to compete for the U.S. Navy's Focused Mission Vessel Study. This study is expected to result in the development and construction of a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), one element of the DD(X) family of surface combatants planned for construction by the Navy during the next quarter century. HDW covers business opportunities for the design, development, construction and sale of Visby-class ships and/or derivative technology to the U.S. government for the LCS and other U.S.
