U.S. Navy Awards General Dynamics $8.7B Contract for Six Virginia-Class Subs

The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat an $8.7 billion block-buy contract for the construction of six Virginia-class submarines, the largest submarine order in U.S. history. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD). The contract authorizes Electric Boat, the lead shipyard, and its teammate, Northrop Grumman Newport News, to proceed with the construction of one ship per year from FY 03 through FY 06, and two ships in FY 07. "This is an extremely significant contract award," said Michael W. Toner, president of Electric Boat and executive vice president of General Dynamics Marine Systems group.

George H. W. Bush to Authenticate Keel for Carrier Named in his Honor

Former President George H. W. Bush will serve as the keel authenticator and keynote speaker for the the keel laying ceremony for the aircraft carrier George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) at Northrop Grumman Corporation's Newport News sector Saturday, Sept. 6. Former First Lady Barbara Bush will also attend with their daughter, Doro Bush Koch, the ship's sponsor. Keel Laying Ceremony for CVN 77

Navy tradition dictates that each ship constructed for the Navy be honored by ceremonies on four historic occasions: keel laying, christening (or launching), commissioning, and decommissioning. George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) will be honored with the first of its historic occasions on Saturday, September 6, at Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA. The keel laying celebrates the laying of the first timber of a ship and can be traced back to the construction of early Navy ships. The present-day ceremony maintains the tradition, but has been modified because of updated materials, technology, and shipbuilding techniques. Following the ceremony, the former President Bush will initial a nameplate to authenticate the keel that will then be welded to it.

Three Exec Appointments at Newport News

Northrop Grumman Corporation announces the following three executive appointments in its Newport News sector: Becky Stewart, currently vice president, Surface Ship and Submarine Fleet Maintenance Program has been named head of the Submarine Program; Irwin F. Edenzon, currently vice president, Business and Technology Development, has been named vice president, Technology Development and Fleet Support; and John J. promoted to vice president, Business Development. Laura Bush Authenticates Keel

Northrop Grumman Corporation's Newport News sector hosted a keel laying ceremony for the second Virginia-class submarine, Texas (SSN 775). Laura Bush is the Ship's Sponsor and served as the keel authenticator for the ceremony. Mrs. Bush authenticated the keel by chalking her initials onto a metal plate. Her initials were then welded and the plate will be permanently affixed to the submarine. "A mighty American submarine deserves a mighty American name," she said. Virginia-class. USS Ronald Reagan Commissioned in Norfolk

The Navy’s newest and most sophisticated nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), was commissioned July 12, 2003 at the Norfolk Naval Station in Norfolk, Va. Named after America's 40th president, Reagan is the ninth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier built by Northrop Grumman Newport News and the first carrier named for a living president. The keynote speaker for the commissioning ceremony was Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney. Mrs. Ronald Reagan also attended the ceremony and served as the ship’s sponsor. Other ceremony participants included Virginia Governor Mark Warner, Virginia Senator John Warner, Acting Secretary of the Navy Hansford Johnson, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Vern Clark, and Northrop Grumman Newport News President Tom Schievelbein.

Northrop Grumman Corporation announced that the nation's newest and most advanced nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), returned to the Newport News sector following successful completion of initial sea trials. The sea trials are an aggressive series of operational tests to demonstrate that Reagan's two nuclear propulsion plants and their operators are fully mission capable. Adm. Frank L. "Skip" Bowman, director of the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, conducted the initial sea trials. Bowman concluded that Reagan's propulsion plants and their operators met or exceeded expectations.
