Sweden’s new signals intelligence (SIGINT) vessel was launched from the Nauta Shiprepair Yard in Gdynia, Poland.Outfitting and equipment installation will take place in Nauta Shiprepair Yard, after which the vessel will undergo harbour and sea trials. Kongsberg Maritime said it has been selected to deliver ST2400 VDS (Varial Depth Sonar) systems for Anti-Submarine Warfare applications (ASW) to the Royal Swedish Navy as part of SAAB’s upgrade program for the Göteborg-Class Corvettes fleet. The main purpose of the ST2400 VDS is to detect submarines, mines and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles in Littoral waters. The ST2400 VDS upgrade will strengthen the Göteborg-Class Corvettes Anti-Submarine capability operating in the Baltics.

On June 2 Nauta Shiprepair Yard launched a newly built partly outfitted fishing trawler Rockall. It was third launching ceremony in Nauta Shipyard this year. Rockall is also the 10th unit which was built by Nauta for Karstensens Skibsvaerft AS. Rockall (B-436) is 69.9 m long and 14.2 m wide. Depth of the unit is 7.5 m. Astrid Fiskeri AS from Denmark will be the final owner of the ship. In terms of technical parameters, the vessel is similar to the Grateful, which was launched in September 2016. Defence and security company Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) for delivery of advanced anti-submarine warfare training, including the autonomous underwater vehicle AUV62 in training configuration. Deliveries will take place during the period 2016-2019. As part of the Letter of Intent (LoI) between Saab and FMV, announced on June 9 2014, and which supports the Swedish Armed Forces’ underwater capabilities for the period 2015-2024, Saab has now received an order for the delivery of advanced anti-submarine warfare training. Included in the contract is the autonomous underwater vehicle AUV62-AT, configured for anti-submarine training, and the delivery of support and maintenance to the customer.

The Swedish Navy together with SAAB Kockums AB has selected an active sonar suite and bottom navigation technology from Kongsberg Maritime for installation on two next generation A26 submarines, which are due for delivery no later than 2022. The first of a series of three ASD TUGs 2810 Hybrid was navigated into the Den Helder harbor by the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) on Saturday, February 20. This hybrid tug that bears the name Noordzee is almost 29 meters long and is the first standard hybrid tug supplied by Damen that the RNLN will employ. At this time, the RNLN has four conventional tugs in Den Helder at its disposal. However, these older vessels do not have sufficient power to tug new ships such as the HNLMS Karel Doorman, HNLMS Rotterdam and the HNLMS Johan de Witt.

As part of a rebuild and lifetime extension program for five Swedish Navy patrol boats, Swede Ship Marine will install new Kongsberg Maritime sonar systems to replace the previous model SIMRAD SS576 sonar first installed in 1996 on board the Tapper-class (or Bevakningsbåt 80). At 22 meters in length and a displacement of 62 tons, the Tapper-class Fast Patrol Boats operate in extremely shallow water and require sonar capable of high performance in such environments. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has awarded contracts worth Skr8.6bn ($1.03bn) to Saab AB for the construction of two new Type A26 submarines and a mid-life upgrade for two Gotland-class submarines. Work on the two A26s is to be completed by 2024. Type A26 submarines are nearly 207 feet in length, 21 feet in the beam and have an endurance of 45 days or 18 days underwater. They have a test depth of about 658 feet. This new development will see Saab construct, verify, and deliver two new Type A26 submarines for the Swedish Navy for a total order value of SEK7.6bn ($912.84m). The order refers to the period 2014-2015 and amounts to the value of MSEK 43. 14 Indian seafarers are now safe, after pirates, who took control of their cargo vessel were hounded away by a EUNACFOR warship. This type of cargo vessel, known as a dhow, has been used in the past by pirates as a ‘mother ship’, to enable them to sail far out to sea to attack passing merchant ships. The Defense Material Organization of the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) has contracted Damen Shipyards Group for the delivery of five Harbor and Seagoing tugs. The contract has been made in cooperation with its Swedish counterpart: Swedish Försvarets Materielverk (FMV). Responding to current and future developments in emission reduction and environmentally friendly shipping, the RNLN has opted for a new Damen design: the ASD Tug 2810 Hybrid. The FMV has opted for another fit-for-purpose design: the ice-classed ASD Tug 3010 ICE.
