A Chinese research ship and five escort vessels were in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) on Friday, close to gas blocks operated by Russian firms in the South China Sea, a day after Vietnam urged the ships to leave.The Chinese vessel Xiang Yang Hong 10 began operating in Vietnam's EEZ on May 7, representing the most significant incursion since 2019, according to Ray Powell, who leads Stanford University's Project Myoushu on the South China Sea.He said China's conduct and Vietnam's reaction were a "worrying escalation."China claims most of the energy-rich waters of the South China Sea, including areas that are within Vietnam's EEZ. Graduates from SUNY Maritime College receive among the highest return on investment on their degrees in the country. In its annual report of best value colleges, PayScale ranked SUNY Maritime College as the top public institution for return on investment and third nationally, tied with Harvey Mudd College and following California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The college also came in first among public institutions and fifth nationally according to a similar ranking by CNN Money, after MIT, Cal Tech, Harvey Mudd and Stanford University.

U.S. shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today a number of changes across its leadership team. HII’s Board of Directors has elected Christopher D. Kastner to succeed Barbara A. Niland as the company’s chief financial officer and corporate vice president, business management, effective with Niland’s retirement on March 1, 2016. Furthermore Philip Luna, corporate vice president and president, UniversalPegasus International (UPI), a subsidiary of HII, has been promoted to the HII senior executive team, effective immediately.

It's a career-defining moment for 36 college and university faculty April 30, as the Department of the Navy announces the recipients of its 2015 Young Investigator Program, one of the oldest and most selective scientific research advancement programs in the country. Collectively, awardees will receive $18.8 million in grants to fund research across a range of naval-relevant science and technology areas. This is a banner year for the program, administered by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), which increased funding by 50 percent over last year. "These recipients demonstrate the type of visionary, multidisciplinary thought that helps the U.S. Navy anticipate and adapt to a dynamic battlespace," said Dr. Larry Schuette, ONR's director of research.

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd today announced that Mr Ravinder Singh will replace Mr Sew Chee Jhuen as President of Singapore Technologies Kinetics Ltd (ST Kinetics). Mr Sew will take on a new role as President for Special Projects at ST Engineering. The appointments are effective 23 March 2015. Mr Singh is currently Deputy President, Corporate and Market Development at Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited (ST Electronics), a role he held since joining the Group in August 2014. He will relinquish this appointment in ST Electronics. Currently, in this position, he leads the Group's Smart Nation initiatives and will continue to do so in his new capacity.

The Port of Los Angeles has appointed Marla Bleavins as its Chief Financial Officer. Bleavins will oversee the port’s financial affairs, which include accounting, financial management, debt and treasury, risk management and audit functions. She will manage approximately 60 employees and report to Molly Campbell, Deputy Executive Director of Finance and Administration. Bleavins replaces Karl Pan, who retired last week after 11 years with the City of Los Angeles, including the last six years at the port.

President Energy gave a mid-November update on the progress of the Lapacho well, Chaco Region, Paraguay. The well has been drilled to 4,490m since setting casing at 4,125m. President has previously announced that a light oil/condensate discovery had been made higher up the well in the Icla Formation and that drilling would continue to penetrate the main Santa Rosa target. President has now drilled the upper section of the Santa Rosa Formation and considers it is drilling a series of gas or gas/condensate sands. The University of California voted on Friday to maintain its investments in fossil fuels, frustrating a student-led effort to divest its portfolio in oil, natural gas and coal. UC is among the major college endowments have been reluctant to shake up their portfolios by pulling out of fossil fuels after Stanford University, one of the most prestigious and wealthiest in America, took that step in May. Jagdeep Bachher, UC Regent's Chief Investment Officer, said in a presentation that UC's fossil fuel holdings amounts to $10 billion of the $91 billion in the college's investment portfolio. In a statement, the UC Board of Regents said it intended to invest $1 billion in a plan addressing solutions for climate change. Diminishing investments in fossil fuels was an option, but divestment was not.

Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) today announced the appointment of Dr Beh Swan Gin as an independent and non-executive Director of the Company with effect from 1 September 2014. Dr Beh, 47, is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Law. He was Managing Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) from 2008 to 2012. Dr Beh is a medical doctor by training and graduated from the National University of Singapore. He is also a Sloan Fellow with a Master of Science in Management from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, and completed the Advanced Management Programme at the Harvard Business School in 2012.
