Tom Perrine, Austal VP of Engineering, Retires

Austal USA Vice President of Engineering, Tom Perrine, has retired after eight years of service with the company and over 40 years in the shipbuilding industry. During his tenure, Perrine led Austal USA’s engineering department overseeing the work of over 250 engineers, naval architects, designers, and other engineering support staff and overseeing the department’s shift to include steel design and construction.During Perrine’s tenure with the company, Austal USA delivered 23 surface combatants and auxiliaries to the U.S.

Boykin Tapped as Next Newport News President

Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Board of Directors has elected Jennifer R. Boykin to serve as executive vice president of HII and president of HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division, effective July 1. She will succeed Matt Mulherin, who announced that he will retire on August 1 after a 36-year career at Newport News Shipbuilding. Boykin, who will report to HII President and CEO Mike Petters effective July 1, currently serves as vice president, engineering and design for Newport News Shipbuilding.

NSRP Selects Next Round of Shipbuilding R&D Projects

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has selected a new round of research and development projects for award, as part of the program's continuing mission to reduce costs associated with U. S. shipbuilding and ship repair. These new projects, valued at over $14.5 million, including cost share, were among those proposed in response to Research Announcement 14-01, issued in June 2015. Objective: This project is a follow-on to the HiDep Weld Tfillet and Butt Weld Development RA project. It aims to implement the results of the new welding process to reduce weld distortion and improve productivity in shipyard panel construction. The new process utilizes induction heating technology and has minimal capital cost requirements.

NSRP Awards $11m for R&D Project Portfolio

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has selected a new round of research and development projects for award, as part of the program's continuing mission to reduce costs associated with U.S. shipbuilding and ship repair. These new projects, valued at over $11 million, including cost share, were among those proposed in response to Research Announcement 13-01, issued in June. Objective: The goal of this project is to transfer a cost-saving and quality-enhancing technology from the aerospace industry to the shipbuilding industry. The vision is to demonstrate the superiority of laser peening over select current shipbuilding processes in specific applications.

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has awarded funding for six new research and development projects to continue the program’s mission to reduce the costs associated with U. S. shipbuilding and ship repair. These new projects, valued at approximately $14.6 million in both Navy funding and industry cost share, were among those proposed in response to a September 2010 Research Announcement. The NSRP collaboration periodically funds major R&D projects through which breakthrough technologies and processes can be developed and implemented as a means of reducing shipbuilding and repair costs for the Navy and shipbuilding industry.

NSRP Eight New Shipbuilding R&D Projects

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has awarded funding for eight new research projects as part of the Navy/Industry co-funded portfolio focusing on cost reduction in the U.S. shipbuilding and ship repair industry. These new projects, valued at approximately $16m including industry cost share, were among those proposed in response to an October 2009 Research Announcement. Fueled by Navy funding that is matched by cost share provided by industry teams, the NSRP collaboration periodically funds major R&D projects through which new technologies and innovative processes can be developed and implemented as a means of reducing shipbuilding and repair costs for the Navy and the industry at large.

NSRP Approves Ship Production Projects

On 12 November 2008, the Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise announced the selection of 9 new Ship Production Panel projects, totaling approximately $777,000, specifically designed to reduce the costs associated with Navy shipbuilding and ship repair. NSRP Approves 8 Ship Production Projects

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program Advanced Shipbuilding Enterprise (NSRP ASE) announced the selection of eight new Ship Production Panel Projects, totaling approximately $500,000. The Navy’s sponsors this program as a means to help reduce the cost in building and maintaining its fleet. Business Case Outline and Commodity Material Standardization Process: The intent of this project is to create a consistent, verifiable business case outline and process that can be applied to any specific situation that requires analyses for cost benefit and investment. Shipyards need a standard detailed business case outline and a repeatable process that can calculate the costs and benefits of making changes.

NSRP Approves 11 Ship Production Projects

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has selected 11 new Ship Production Panel projects, totaling approximately $756,000, designed to reduce the costs of Navy shipbuilding and ship repair. These relatively short, low cost projects were selected to complement portfolios of larger R&D projects funded through NSRP in responding to industry-consensus priorities and the Navy customer’s research areas of greatest interest. (Business Process Technologies Panel): U.S. commercial shipbuilding is important to maintain and modernize the industrial base for both new construction and repair of military ships and craft. Bollinger Announces Staff Changes

As Bollinger Lockport New Construction (BLN) continues to grow, Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. announces changes to its managerial staff. Dennis Fanguy has been appointed to the position of vice president of quality management system where his responsibilities will encompass the programs in quality assurance / quality control, process improvement, accuracy control and test and trial groups for BLN, as well as the company’s ISO program. Fanguy has been with Bollinger for twenty-one years. He headed the design team for 115 patrol boats built by Bollinger for the U.S. Coast Guard. He also headed the team that designed the only fleet of U.S. Navy Fast Patrol boats ever built, which were also constructed at Bollinger. Fanguy is a graduate of the University of New Orleans in Electrical Engineering.

GD Exec to Address Maine Maritime Graduates

Michael W. Toner, executive vice president, marine systems, General Dynamics Corporation, and president of General Dynamics Electric Boat, Groton, Conn., will address the graduating class at Maine Maritime Academy's 60th Commencement on May 10, 2003. Toner, who will receive an honorary doctorate from the college at the ceremony, has been with Electric Boat for nearly 40 years. Earlier this year, he was named executive vice president, marine systems, of General Dynamics Corp. Marine systems - a position that encompasses all of the corporation's shipbuilding and marine-service operations. In addition, Toner remains president of General Dynamics Electric Boat - a position he has held for more than three years.
