Yale Cordage Acquires Largest Test Bed in Eastern US

Yale Cordage announced its acquisition of a Sahm Splice test bed, with capacity for destructive and non-destructive testing of synthetic rope, wire rope, shackles, chain and slings up to 1,300,000 pounds in tensile and a low-range capacity of up to 250,000 pounds. With a maximum test sample length of 116 feet with a 15 foot stroke, it is one of the largest and most capable test beds in the eastern United States.“We are very excited to bring this added test capability to Yale for our existing and future clients,” says Bill Putnam, President of Yale Cordage.

New Approaches to Inland Infrastructure Renewal

A new engineered repair system for seawalls is based on fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) technology that has been used for several years to repair and strengthen worn and damaged marine piles made of timber or concrete using specialized composites. Economical repairs are being applied to rapidly corroding steel and concrete structures in U.S. ports and inland waterways. The new repair systems – PileMedic & SPiRe – might just be what the doctor ordered. Recent advancements in using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) for major structural repair and strengthening of submerged marine piles made of concrete or even timber has led to an economical, less invasive infrastructure repair solution for inland port development compared to current systems.

Bollinger Delivers USCGC Benjamin Dailey

Bollinger Shipyards said it has delivered the USCGC Benjamin Dailey, the 23rd Fast Response Cutter (FRC) to the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard took delivery of the 154-foot patrol craft on April 20, 2017 in Key West, Fla. The vessel’s commissioning is scheduled for July 4, 2017 in Pascagoula, Miss. The 23rd vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class FRC program, USCGC Benjamin Dailey will be the first FRC to be stationed in the 8th Coast Guard District in Pascagoula, Miss. Previous cutters have been stationed in Florida; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Cape May, N.J. and Ketchikan, Alaska.

FRC Bailey Barco Delivered to the USCG

The U.S. Coast Guard has taken delivery of USCGC Bailey Barco on February 7, 2017 in Key West, Fla. The vessel is scheduled to be commissioned in Ketchikan, Alaska in June, 2017. USCGC Bailey Barco is the 22nd vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class Fast Response Cutter (FRC), built by Bollinger Shipyards using an in-service parent craft design based on the Damen Stan Patrol Boat 4708. The 154-foot patrol has a flank speed of 28 knots, state-of-the-art command, control, communications and computer technology, and a stern launch system for the vessel’s 26 foot cutter boat.

Chinese Naval Ships Dock in US

Three Chinese naval vessels have arrived at a US Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville,  in the US state of Florida, reports Xinhua. The "goodwill" visit will help build trust and increase understanding, according to the Mayport Public Affairs Office. Their friendly visit is part of a world tour showcasing the advances in China's maritime capabilities. It comes at a time of tensions between the two countries over the South China Sea, but it is aimed at uniting rather than dividing. The trip itinerary includes visiting each other's ships, attending cultural events around the area and participating in Mayport's fall sports week. The Jinan missile destroyer…

Dredges Work to Restore National Wildlife Refuge

Dredges are currently being used in a large tidal marsh restoration project at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Delaware, one of the largest ever marsh restoration projects in the eastern U.S. Using two Two Ellicott 460SL dredges, the project aims to restore a highly damaged tidal marsh/barrier beach ecosystem covering about 4,000 acres within the former freshwater impoundment system on the refuge. This coastal wetland restoration also improves the ability of the refuge marshes to withstand future storms and sea level rise and improves habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife.

Trident Seafoods has opened a $40 million production and distribution center in Carrollton, Ga., providing 175 full-time jobs and the capacity to produce 50,000 tons of finished products annually for the U.S. market. "We are excited to add Trident to our family of customers, especially within the valuable refrigerated cargo market," said Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Curtis Foltz. Savannah's Garden City Terminal offers 84 refrigerated container racks and 814 chassis plug-ins, powering 2,830 refrigerated boxes at a time.

Kohler Marine Sets Sail Aboard the Hermione

Kohler Marine, manufacturer of diesel and gasoline marine generators for a wide range of pleasure and commercial craft applications, announced its participation in the Hermione-Lafayette Voyage 2015. This historic voyage includes an Atlantic crossing as well as a tour of the eastern United States by an authentic reproduction of the Hermione, the 18th century frigate that carried the Marquis de Lafayette to America in 1780 with news that France was sending more than 5,000 troops to help fight the British. The modern-day Hermione – at 185 ft. tall, 216 ft. long and carrying a crew of 75 – was built to exacting specifications over a 17-year period in Rochefort, France. She departed Port des Barques in April and made landfall at Yorktown, Virginia on June 5, 2015.

Millard Maritime & HELM Partner on US Bulk Fertilizer Imports

Leading US Gulf Coast port and cargo solution provider, Millard Maritime®, & HELM Fertilizer Corporation, a major fertilizer distribution and marketing company for the Americas, have jointly agreed to import HELM products to the Millard Maritime facility in Theodore, AL from Trinidad and other ports around the globe. The new agreement will take effect upon completion of an automated bulk storage warehouse. Currently, Millard Maritime unloads the imported fertilizer from the HELM vessel, stores it in shore-based tanks and then loads to rail, truck or barge for distribution to HELM’s customers throughout the Eastern U.S. This existing business, say Millard, will later expand to include additional dry fertilizer commodities by 2015.

Capstone Expands LNG/Diesel Microturbines in Marine Market

Capstone Turbine Corporation, a clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, is expanding its product offering in the marine market and has appointed six Capstone marine distributors. Capstone marine microturbines, which run on cleaner and less costly liquid natural gas (LNG) or traditional diesel, already are installed on several vessels including the Argonon. The Argonon is a Type C Tanker in the European inland waterways that has been successfully operating with two C30 LNG Capstone microturbines since 2011. "The Argonon has been efficiently running using Capstone microturbines in excess of 20,000 combined hours," said Gerard Deen, Founder of Deen Shipping.

Chevron Urges USA to Seize Energy Opportunity

Conservative estimates put the size of recoverable crude oil and natural gas offshore USA the equivalent of nearly 35 years of Saudi Arabia's production. Matson Expands Savannah Operation

Matson Logistics, a leading provider of multimodal transportation, warehousing, and distribution services throughout North America, has established new distribution center space in Savannah. “Our new operation expands on our ability to move retail goods in through the Port of Savannah,” said Mark Ferzacca, assistant vice president of sales for Matson Logistics Warehousing. Matson has contracted for 65,000 square feet, with the ability to increase to 125,000 square feet.

Greek Shipowners Visit Posidonia 2012

A strong delegation of the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) led by Chairman Theodore Veniamis visited the 23rd Posidonia Exhibition today where they met with many decision makers from the global marine community who converged to Athens once again to participate at the world’s biggest shipping trade event. The UGS members visited major exhibitors across the vast four halls of the 60,000 square-metres Metropolitan Expo and met with representatives from Far Eastern, US and European shipbuilders, marine equipment suppliers and classification societies. “This is the best and biggest Posidonia ever with more than 1,800 exhibitors from almost 90 countries.

NOAA Reviews 2010 Storms, End of Hurricane Season

According to NOAA the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, which just ended, was one of the busiest on record. In contrast, the eastern North Pacific season had the fewest storms on record since the satellite era began. In the Atlantic Basin a total of 19 named storms formed – tied with 1887 and 1995 for third highest on record. Of those, 12 became hurricanes – tied with 1969 for second highest on record. Five of those reached major hurricane status of Category 3 or higher. These totals are within the ranges predicted in NOAA’s seasonal outlooks issued on May 27 (14-23 named storms; 8-14 hurricanes; 3-7 major hurricanes) and August 5 (14-20 named storms; 8-12 hurricanes; 4-6 major hurricanes). An average Atlantic season produces 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

Vessels: Response Marine to Design Multi-Task Boats

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts awarded the design contract for a 40-45-ft. fisheries patrol boat to Response Marine, Inc. of Newburyport, Mass. (Pictured below, left). The 35+ knot boat will be used for fisheries enforcement, boating safety enforcement, homeland security as well as search and rescue patrols. Respone Marine is teaming with Marine Design Inc. of Gulf Breeze, Fla., on the project, which is expected to be completed in late 2003 for construction proposals early in 2004. Response Marine has also been hired by Winninghoff Boats to design and manage construction of its most recent fire/rescue boats. These include two 30-ft. twin outboard, pilothouse boats with firefighting systems up to 1,500 gpm at 150 psi, and a single outboard, open boat with a 550 gpm system.

Volvo Penta Diesels Make Impact on Tug

Volvo Penta is enjoying continued success with sales of engines for vessels operating in canal and river traffic in the US. When the barge transportation company, Stevens Towing in South Carolina, recently installed its first four-stroke diesel engines in one of its tugboats, its choice of engine was Volvo Penta’s TAMD165C. The results to date are impressive – the company calculates that it gains the equivalent of one engine per year through lower fuel and maintenance costs! There is a large market for new engines for tugboats working on canals and rivers in the US.
