1779 - Amphibious expedition against British in Penobscot Bay, Me. 1863 - U.S. Squadron bombards Fort Wagner, N.C. 1866 - Rank of Admiral created. David G. Farragut is appointed the first Admiral in the U.S. Navy. 1898 - Landing party from armed yacht Gloucester occupies Guanica, Puerto Rico. 1912 - First specifications for naval aircraft published. 1934 - First President to visit Hawaii, Franklin D. Roosevelt, reaches Hilo on board USS Houston (CA 30). 1941 - Bureau of Ordnance issues first Navy "E"certificates (for excellence) for industry. 1943 - Launching of USS Harmon (DE 72), first ship named for an African-American. 1990 - USS Cimarron (AO 177) rescues 25 refugees adrift southeast of Subic Bay, Philippines.

From the Naval News Service:   1813 - Sailing Master Elijah Mix attempts to blow up British warship Plantagenet with a torpedo near Cape Henry, Virginia. 1944 - Following 43 days of naval gunfire and air bombardment, Naval Task Force lands Marines on Tinian, Northern Mariana Islands.

This Day in U.S. Naval History – November 5

1775 - Commodore Esek Hopkins appointed to Commander in Chief of the Continental Navy. 1915 - In AB-2 flying boat, LCDR Henry C. Mustin makes first underway catapult launch from a ship, USS North Carolina, at Pensacola Bay, FL. 1917 - German submarine torpedoes USS Alcedo off French coast. 1923 - Tests designed to prove the feasibility of launching a small seaplane from a submarine occur at Hampton Roads Naval Base. A Martin MS-1, stored disassembled in a tank on board USS S-1, was removed and assembled. Then the submarine submerged allowing the plane to float free and take off. 1944 - TF 38 (Vice Admiral John S. McCain) begins 2 days of carrier strikes on Luzon, Philippines. 1945 - Ensign Jake C. West (VF-41) makes first jet landing on board a carrier, USS Wake Island (CVE-65) .

1841 - "Mosquito Fleet" commanded by LCDR J. T. McLaughlin, USN, carries 750 Sailors and Marines into the Everglades to fight the Seminole Indians. 1941 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt places Coast Guard under jurisdiction of Department of the Navy for duration of national emergency. 1967 - Operation Coronado IX began in Mekong Delta 1979 - Beginning of retirement of Polaris A-3 program begins with removal of missiles from USS Abraham Lincoln. This Day in Naval History – May 18

1775 - Benedict Arnold captures British sloop and renames her Enterprise, first of many famous ships with that name 1798 - Appointment of Benjamin Stoddert as first Secretary of the Navy 1969 - Launch of Apollo 10, dress rehearsal for first lunar landing mission. CDR John W. Young, USN, was the Command Module Pilot and CDR Eugene A. Cernan, USN, was the Lunar Module Pilot. During the 8 Day mission, the craft made 31 lunar orbits in 61.6 hours. Recovery was by HS-4 helicopters from USS Princeton (LPH-5). (Source: Naval News Service)

1909 - Commander Robert E. 1917 - U.S. 1945 - First heavy kamikaze attack on ships at Okinawa. 1961 - USS Lake Champlain brings oxygen to aid stricken passenger of British liner Queen of Bermuda. 1993 - Branch Navy Hospital Adak responds to crash of civilian Chinese airline providing lifesaving treatment and medical evacuation of 89 injured passengers. Only one passenger out of 265 passengers died.

USS Constitution – 200+ Yrs of Service

The crew of USS Constitution - the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world - celebrated the ship's 211th birthday and recognized the performance of her Sailors Oct. 21. More than 100 people attended the celebration, including her crew, staff members of the USS Constitution Museum and invited guests for the annual "Grog Ceremony" on her decks. The party also included a birthday cake and the presentation of the Berenson Award, the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts Leadership Award, and Millerick Award. NYC – USS Bataan Arrives

Nearly 1,500 Sailors and Marines arrived in New York City Nov. 5 aboard the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) to celebrate Veteran's Day events. Upon completion of this week's port visit, Bataan will continue at-sea training to prepare for their upcoming 2009 deployment. Bataan is the fifth ship of the Navy's Wasp-class ships. She was commissioned Sept. 20, 1997 and is the second U.S. Navy warship to bear the name. CVL-29 was an Independence-class light aircraft carrier that was commissioned in November 1943.

Navy to Commission First LCS

The Navy's first littoral combat ship (LCS) Freedom will be commissioned Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, during a 10 a.m. EST ceremony at Veterans Park, Milwaukee, Wis. Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Birgit Smith, the ship's sponsor, is the widow of Army Sgt. 1st Class Paul Ray Smith, who was killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
