Amazon Expands Logistics Reach in China

Amazon.com Inc is aggressively expanding its logistics operations in China as part of a broader effort to control the rising cost of shipping billions of packages. Its plans in China, outlined in filings there, include handling cargo and customs for goods headed to ports in Japan, Europe and the United States. Some analysts say the move could help position Amazon to offer shipping services to other companies, eventually competing with the likes of United Parcel Service Inc and DHL Worldwide Express BV. That would mirror the strategy of Amazon's cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services, which is now the company's fastest growing unit. The service was launched to serve Amazon's own retail operations but now hosts data for other companies.

Mobile App Aims to Boost LA’s Port Efficiency

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti today announced that Cargomatic, a Los Angeles-based, privately-owned technology company that matches trucking capacity with shipments, is testing its mobile app to speed up the flow of containerized cargo at the Port of Los Angeles (POLA). Cargomatic has developed a peel-off shipping concept that it calls the “Cargomatic Free Flow” program, a web-based solution that optimizes container moves for cargo owners, terminals, and trucking companies. Testing began in early January and preliminary results are encouraging, POLA said.

Chevron Launches Online Link

Chevron has formed Silicon Valley Oil Co., (SVOC), an online marketplace that plans to enable sales of fuels and lubricants to commercial and industrial customers through the Internet. Various large petroleum marketers, such as Hasco Oil and Thomas Petroleum, have joined in on the site from its commencement - providing feedback during live testing. Chevron collaborated on this project with Computer Sciences Corp. during the initial strategy formulation, market research and creation of SVOC, which is scheduled to be launched during the third quarter. The site will allow transactions such as placing orders for diesel fuel and bidding to fill these orders - leveraging current business practices with the convenience and efficiency of the Internet.

OceanConnect.com And Clarksons Agree On Bunker Business

OceanConnect.com, the global online marketplace for the purchase and sale of marine fuels, products and services has entered into a joint marketing and services agreement with integrated shipping services group H. Clarkson & Co., effective March 31. The operating alliance between the two companies combines the transparent marketplace of online auctions with the personal service and post fixture support of a leading marine fuel broker. This alliance, which offers a variety of new options transaction options, was developed in response to customer feedback. Several new transaction options are now offered, such as the ability to log on to OceanConnect.com and transact business without any further assistance.

Seaway Launches E-Business Applications

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) and the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC) announced today the launch of their E-Business Application Suite. Designed after extensive consultation with the marine industry, the suite provides a range of applications that will enhance the Seaway and Great Lakes as a key transportation artery within North America and gateway to global trade. Comprised of four applications, the suite enables stakeholders to efficiently plan transits, calculate costs, and coordinate activities with other stakeholders.
