The Winter Games, code-named RigRun is a six week offshore event, which aims to improve health in the offshore industry and gather funds for charity at the same time. Seven Maersk Drilling jack-ups are currently competing against each other and 19 other rigs to claim first place.

The RigRun challenge, explain Maersk Drilling, is open to all rig personnel. It’s a race against each other to clock up miles by running, walking, cycling and rowing. The more occupied each piece of gym equipment is over each 24 hour period, the more miles will be clocked up and the greater chance the rigs have of becoming RigRun Winter Games 2014 champion.

Maersk Drilling has seven rigs participating in RigRun® 2014, both in order to improve health and fitness and to benefit charity. As of today (week six), Maersk Resolute is the best placed Maersk Drilling rig, at an overall 10th place with 3918.1 total miles, quickly followed by Maersk Resilient at 12th place with 3455.6 total miles.

Maersk Resilient Rig Medic Wallace Bruce comments: “As a Medic, it’s all about engaging crew members into a healthier lifestyle, and in my opinion, RigRun® ticks all the right boxes. I had discussed with management the idea of RigRun and they embraced it, realising the importance of exercise in terms of losing weight and the obvious health benefits."

“When I ask people their reasons for doing this, I get all sort of motivating factors, from wanting to fit into a kilt for a wedding to wanting to beat a co-worker for fun. I’ve witnessed one crew member lose 7kg over the space of two trips with the help of RigRun.”

The event was launched in 2012 by IHS (UK) Ltd, who has been providing health promotion and consultancy services to organisations for over 12 years.
