Hanwha Ocean Secures $258M Order for Two VLCCs

South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has received an order to construct two very large crude carriers (VLCCs) for a shipping company in Oceania.The order for VLCCs, worth $257.8 million (342 billion won), is the first such order for Hanwha Ocean in the last three years. This is also the highest price for the vessels in 16 years, since the 2008 global financial crisis, the company said.The ships will be built at the Geoje plant and delivered to the shipowner in the first and second half of 2026ā€¦

Hanwha Ocean Receives $250M Order for Two Very Large Ammonia Carriers

Hanwha Ocean has secured an order worth approximately $250 million for two very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) for a shipowner in the Oceania region.Each VLAC will be able to transport 93,000 cubic meters (cbm) of ammonia, and will be equipped with eco-friendly technology, the South Korean shipbuilder said.In particular, the ships integrate the company's carbon-reduction technologies, including HS4 (Hanwha SmartShip Solution & Service), a smart ship platform developed by Hanwha Ocean itselfā€¦

Second Hybrid Superstar RoPax Delivered to Finnlines

Finnlines announced it has taken delivery of Finncanopus, its second of two Superstar-series freight-passenger (ro-pax) vessels from shipbuilder China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai.The newbuild is slated to enter service on Finnlinesā€™ line between Finland and Sweden (Naantaliā€“Långnäsā€“Kapellskär) in February 2024. The homeward voyage is expected to take 6ā€“7 weeks as Finncanopus will be nearly fully loaded with freight and will call several ports before entering the Baltic Sea.Finncanopus is the final vessel of Finnlines EUR 500-million Green Newbuilding Programā€¦

Rhenus Upgrades Engines on Two Pushboats

The Rhenus Group announced it has upgraded two canal push boats operated by Deutsche Binnenreederei (DBR) with new stage V engines.While the new construction of more sustainable hydrogen-powered vessels is a long-term project, the Rhenus Group is retrofitting its older vessels with modern and therefore more environmentally-friendly technology in the short term. The two canal push boats, RSPSB146 and RSPSB153, which were built in 1978 and 1979 respectively, are the first to undergo this process.It has taken about ten months to convert the two vessels.

New LCO2 Cargo Tank Design Gets KR Approval

KR (Korean Register) has granted an approval in principle (AIP) for a liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) cargo tank design, developed by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), during this weeks Gastech conference in Singapore.This AIP is the result of a joint project involving the three companies: HMD designed the cargo tank, HD KSOE conducted an engineering critical assessment (ECA), and KR ensured the designā€™s suitability by reviewing classification rules and international regulations.The demand for LCO2 carriers is projected to riseā€¦

NY Waterway to Upgrade Ferries with Hybrid Propulsion

Norwind Offshore Takes Delivery of Norwind Breeze Vessel

Norwind Offshore, a Norwegian offshore wind-focused vessel owner has taken delivery of its first vessel - the Norwind Breeze - from Vard.The delivery took place Monday at 1 p.m. local time from Vard, Brattvåg, in Norway. Before the conversion, the service operation vessel used to be a platform supply vessel, previously known as MMA Responder.The vessel arrived in Norway in November 2021 where the rebuilding and outfitting process started.The vessel has been equipped with, among other, a larger and modernized accommodation (60 pax), and a large battery power system to reduce emissions.

MAN ME-GI Engines Ordered for 10 Seaspan Box Ships

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group has ordered 10 MAN B&W 7G80ME-C10.5-GI engines in connection with the construction of 10 7,000-teu containerships for Seaspan Corporation, the world's largest, independent container vessel owner.The contract includes an option for five further vessels. Engine delivery is scheduled from October 2023 to 2024; Seaspan has  already chartered the ships on long-term contracts.Upon completion, the newbuildings will become the largest ME-GI-powered container vessels built by a Chinese shipyard.Thomas S.

BMT Designs New Vessels for Isles of Scilly Steamship Company

Naval architecture and marine engineering firm BMT has introduced new passenger and cargo vessel designs to replace older tonnage in the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company fleet.Designed to replace the 44-year-old Scillonian III, a new 72-meter vessel Scillonian IV will carry 600 passengers over three decks with a contemporary, comfortable seating arrangement, onboard coffee shop and retail area. MOL, DSME Collaborate on New FSRU Tech

Japanese shipping major Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has entered into an agreement with Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) to jointly develop a new technology to reduce environmental impact for Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU).The new technology named ā€˜Cryo-Powered Regasā€™ will enable to utilize the LNG cold energy, which used to be disposed of, as power generation energy by adopting the Organic Rankine Cycle in the regasification process of the FSRU.Cryo-Powered Regas technology is expected to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emission of FSRUs significantly.MOL and DSME plan to test the technologyā€¦

Wilhelmsen, NorSea Join Forces for Hydrogen

SHI Develops Lithium-Ion Battery System

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) said that it has developed a lithium-ion battery power system for ships.A press release from the shipbuilding giant said that the system, jointly developed with local battery manufacturer Samsung SDI Co., earned a type approval from Norway's renowned classification society DVL-GL, becoming the first local shipbuilder to do so, according to the shipbuilder.The newly developed lithium ion battery system, which reduces fuel consumption of generators by optimally controlling and managing on-board generators and power load, is an Eco-friendly technology that enables reductions in emissions of pollutant substances and in operating costs as well.As the global demand for environmentally friendly technologies is higher than everā€¦

Norwegian Electric Systems will deliver equipment in connection with the electrification of MF Norangsfjord and the charging station at Hollingsholmen ferry quay.Norwayā€™s biggest ferry company Fjord1 has chosen Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) to supply the electrical and automation package to be used in the modification of MF Norangsfjord. The modifications are scheduled for the last half of 2019. Oman Shipping Company (OSC) is expanding courtesy of an order for a pair of newbuild Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC ) with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).According to Michael Jorgensen, OSC's CFO and acting CEO,  said the VLCCs are expected to be deployed in the spot market, as the company plots further fleet expansion in the bulk and container market.Today OSCā€™s fleet includes 49 vessels including 16 VLCCs, 17 product tankers and 4 chemical carriers.The two latest additions will be constructed at DSMEā€™s Okpo shipyard measuring 336m in lengthā€¦

Matson Christens First Aloha Class Vessel 'Daniel K. Inouye'

Largest Containership Built in U.S. Will Serve Hawaii. Matson, a U.S. flag carrier in the Pacific, and Philly Shipyard, Inc. (PSI), the wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary of Philly Shipyard ASA (Oslo: PHLY) christened the largest containership ever built in the United States in a ceremony at the Philly Shipyard on Saturday, June 30. The new vessel is named 'Daniel K. Inouye' in honor of Hawaii's late senior U.S. Senator, who was a longstanding supporter of the U.S. maritime industry and its important role in supporting Hawaii's economy. It is the first of two new ships being built for Honolulu-based Matson by Philly Shipyard at a total cost of approximately $418 million for the pair, and the first of four new vessels that Matson will put into its Hawaii service during the next two years.

MAN Diesel & Turbo, HHI-EMD Invest in New Test Facility

As the global maritime industry steams toward ever-stricter fuel and emission rules, industry leaders such as MAN Diesel & Turbo and Hyundai continue to invest in facilities and technologies. In the most recent case, MAN D&T said today it will build a new test-engine facility in collaboration with its two-stroke licensee, HHI-EMD, the engine and machinery division of Hyundai Heavy Industries. The new venture -- located in Ulsan, Korea at HHI-EMDā€™s works and scheduled to open in 2019 -- will expand MAN Diesel & Turboā€™s R&D test capacity and strengthen its development of dual-fuel gas engines.

Rapp Deck Equipment for New Krill Vessel

Rapp Marine informs it will supply a complete electric deck machinery package for a new 130-meter-long krill vessel under construction for Aker BioMarine at Vard Group AS in Norway. The total contract value is 1 billion NOK (Approximately US$118.5 million). ā€œThis is our first delivery to a krill vessel,ā€ said Tor-Idar Øye, Rapp Marine VP Sales. All plans and specifications for the new vessel have been developed in cooperation with fishermen from Aker BioMarine and engineers from Vard Group AS, according to Aker BioMarine.
