Offshore Systems Meets Milestone in Warship-AIS Program

With the installation of Warship Automatic Identification System (W-AIS) on HMS Illustrious, the current Fleet Flag Ship of the Royal Navy, Offshore Systems Ltd. meets a major milestone of the first major platform fit of this capability. W-AIS provides the Royal Navy with exciting new capabilities that enhance situational awareness for bridge teams through the overlay of AIS contact data onto Warship Electronic Chart Display Information System (WECDIS), whilst providing the military user with a broad source of information and tools that help to extract military advantage from any AIS message including a comprehensive Recognized Maritime Picture. HMS Illustrious is the twelfth Royal Navy platform to receive this capability.

SAAB TransponderTech to Supply AIS to OSI

Saab TransponderTech will supply Warship Automatic Identification Systems (W-AIS) to OSI Geospatial Inc. (OSI) as a part of their contract with the U.K. Royal Navy. In November 2006, the U.K. Ministry of Defence (MoD) awarded a prime contract valued at approximately $29m to OSI to deliver and install the W-AIS systems on up to 77 ships. OSI is also supplying its Electronic Chart Precise Integrated Navigation System (ECPINS) as the standard fleet software for the MoD’s Warship Electronic Chart Display and Information System (WECDIS). The W-AIS will be installed in the ship’s platform operations and control room and integrated into the WECDIS installed on the bridge. The W-AIS will be based on Saab’s proven fourth-generation R4 shipboard AIS transponder.
