In the early morning hours of September 26, 2022, seismologists located throughout northern Europe detected two disturbances originating in the Baltic Sea that were consistent with underwater explosions. Within hours, an aerial image captured by a passing Danish F-16 showed an expanse of frothy seawater, suggesting that the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines had experienced a catastrophic event. Within days, an investigation by the Swedish Security Service concluded that both pipelines had sustained extensive damage due to an act of gross sabotage.

Independent testing and strategic compliance organization Retlif Testing Laboratories has inaugurated phase one of an expansion program to offer more solar radiation testing, including both heat and photochemical testing, to military and commercial product manufacturers. The first of two planned dedicated Solar Radiation Test Chamber upgrades has been completed at Retlif’s Harleysville, Pa. testing laboratory, with phase two scheduled for third quarter 2018 at Retlif’s Ronkonkoma, N.Y. headquarters.

Purpose built ESVAGT vessel to perform additional tasks for Hess at the South Arne field. ESVAGT and Hess, who have collaborated at the South Arne field for 17 years, have agreed to extend their relationship for an additional twelve years. ESVAGT has supplied Hess with supply and standby vessels for the South Arne platform, as well as connecting tank vessels to Hess’ production tanks. The new contract will expand the scope of work to include service, maintenance and inspection of the hose system and to perform service vessel duties in connection with work on Hess’ unmanned platforms. These operations, beginning 2018, will be handled by one purpose designed ESVAGT vessel. Hess started working with ESVAGT in 1999 for standby operations because of our company’s strong reputation.

IMTRA, a manufacturer and importer of commercial marine products, has delivered equipment to the first U.S.-flagged offshore wind farm crew transfer vessel (CTV), Atlantic Pioneer. IMTRA’s scope of supply includes the Colorlight CL20 high-output searchlight, Decca Straight Line wiper system and LED deck, interior and engine room lights for the Blount Boats-built, 69-foot CTV. The vessel was locally built in Rhode Island and has been delivered to its operator, Atlantic Wind Transfers which is based in Quonset Point, R.I.

Propulsion evolves, improves and powers forward in the inland markets. And, Z-Drive propulsion is the future. In a white paper released late in 2014 by The Shearer Group, Ed Shearer and Greg Beers outlined The Next Generation of inland vessels, what will drive design changes and the advantages of azimuthing stern drives – or ‘Z-Drives,’ for short. The world's biggest and most modern krill fishing factory vessel is to be designed by Wärtsilä. The vessel will operate in the pristine waters of the Antarctic, a World Heritage site, and the Wärtsilä design provides an appropriately sustainable environmental solution. The contract, which was signed in December 2015, has been placed by Shanghai based Hansail Marine & Offshore Design and will feature Wärtsilä's VS 6206 FT design. The vessel is to be built for Jiangsu Sunline Deep Sea Fisheries Co, based in China. Wärtsilä's extensive experience in designing highly efficient fishing vessels was an important factor in the award of this contract.

Eastern Shipbuilding offers the 4,200 hp Thunderbolt inland towboat designed around twin azimuthing Verhaar Omega electric V-Pod propulsion and diesel-electric technology. The ESG approach was collaborative, with input from operators, naval architects (Gilbert Associates, Inc. (GAI)) and propulsion OEM’s (Verhaar Omega: since 2012, 19 Omega V-pods have been installed and are in service in Europe on various types of vessels). Thunderbolt will be built to ABS rules, but will not be classed.

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. introduced its new 120-ft., 4,200-hp Inland Towboat design, Thunderbolt, combining twin electric V-Pod propulsion and diesel-electric technology for what the builder calls its “vision of the future for the U.S. Eastern said the idea for the Thunderbolt came from a conversation at a trade show. On the rivers, thruster propulsion systems are starting to get noticed and are outperforming conventional nozzle propeller propulsion systems with main/flanking rudder steering.
