A Palestinian from the Gaza Strip died on Sunday after the Israeli navy fired on the boat he and two others were sailing in, a military spokeswoman said. The navy opened fire after the boat ignored warnings and strayed from a permitted fishing area in the northern Gaza Strip towards Israel, the spokeswoman said. Eli Glickman has been nominated by ZIM Integrated Shipping Services’ board of directors as the container carrier’s new president and CEO. Glickman will assume the role July 1, replacing current CEO Rafi Danieli, who last year advised that he would be stepping down. Danieli led ZIM as CEO for the past eight years, and before this held various positions at ZIM, including CFO and deputy CEO. “It has been a privilege to lead ZIM during the most difficult times the industry has ever faced,” Danieli said.

Offshore energy platforms a potential target; Israel accepting bids on 24 new exploration blocks. Israel is boosting spending on its navy to better protect offshore oil and gas deposits and secure a large maritime zone that abuts that of its neighbour and enemy, Lebanon. The navy asked in 2013 for an increase in its budget of $700 million to build up its systems and $100 million annually to maintain them, though the defence ministry declines to say how much it has since received. The increase was tied to the need to defend the oil and gas development, and the current spending comes as Israel begins accepting bids from companies that want to explore 24 offshore blocks in the eastern Mediterranean that adjoin the vast Leviathan deposit.

Analysts say intelligent analytics could give firm an edge. A young Israeli technology company believes the expertise it has built up in tracking ships for governments and security agencies could help it break into the much larger market for providing information on seaborne commodities. Windward, founded just over five years ago by two former Israeli navy officers, plans to launch a maritime information service later this year for banks, investors and trading houses, its chief executive Ami Daniel told Reuters in an interview. Israeli navy (IDF) holds special exercises with their Italian counterparts in order to perfect joint methods for rescuing the crew of a sunken submarine, reports Ynet. This type of exercise is rare among navies, and the first of its kind in Israel. The drill, held off the coast of Atlit, was conducted with the special cooperation of the Italian navy - one of the few in the world that maintains the ability to extract a sunken submarine's crew. The unique training drill, which lasted three days, tasked troops with rescuing 40 crew members from a Navy submarine at a depth of 60 meters. After a year of planning ahead of the drill, the navy made history, and became one of the few fleets in the world to ever carry out such an exercise.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin visited the shipyard in Kiel and toured the ‘INS Rahav’ the fifth submarine due to be delivered to the Israeli Navy. INS Rahav is the fifth submarine expected to arrive in Israel  in the coming year. The INS Rahav was launched some two years ago and will arrive in Israel this year. According to an agreement with Germany, Israel will procure a sixth submarine in the future. Israel has launched new AquaShield defense system, which locates threats posed to Israel by individual divers and small maritime crafts. The latest defense system makes Israel “100 percent impervious to all such attacks”, says a senior Israeli Naval officer in a press statement. “The chances of a diver infiltrating the system are zero. The system is proven and constitutes a sea barrier for Israel,” the naval officer explained. The Israeli Navy is currently installing the system along Israel's northern sea border, and has already installed it along the sea border with the Gaza Strip, Israel Hayom has learned. AquaShield is essentially a sonar system built to detect divers and provide protection for vital infrastructure located at sea and on the coast, such as gas rigs and ports.

'INS Rahav', the Israeli Navy's 5th Dolphin-class submarine, inaugurated at Thyssen-Krupp Marine Systems in Kiel, Germany. The new submarine  was unveiled at a special ceremony attended by Commander in Chief of the Israeli Navy Rear Adm. Ram Rothberg, Director-General of the Ministry of Defense Maj. Gen. (Res.) Ehud Shani and a delegation of Israeli and German officials. The INS Rahav was purchased after an extensive development and acquisition process led by the Ministry of Defense's Procurement and Production Directorate in cooperation with the Israeli Navy.

According to a report from UPI.com, Israeli military forces were told on June 27 to be firm in blocking a Gaza-bound flotilla while exercising restraint to avoid injuries, Israeli leaders said. UPI.com said reports indicate 10 ships plan to set sail June 28 to breach Israel's blockade of Gaza. Adrick Marine, which provides custom air conditioning and refrigeration solutions to the marine industry, and is the largest supplier of AC and refrigeration units to the U.S. Coast Guard, is, by conventional standards, small, generating about $2 million per year. However the company has successfully carved its niche in "building the specially designed solutions that no one else wants to do," Vassallo said.

A team of underwater search experts from the U.S. has located the wreckage of Israeli submarine Dakar in 9,600 fsw in the Eastern Mediterranean. The search team, headed by Nauticos Corporation of Hanover, Md., consisted of Williamson and Associates of Seattle, and Phoenix Marine, Inc. of Arlington, Va. Initial detection of the wreck was accomplished using a side scan sonar system. After detecting a strong target on two sonar passes, the search team deployed a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to perform a detailed video inspection of the wreck. Video images from the ROV enabled topside naval experts to positively identify the wreck as Dakar. Dakar and its 69 member crew disappeared mysteriously on January 25, 1968.

Eight ships belonging to the NATO southern forces docked at the Haifa port as part of the NATO Mediterranean dialog program. The ships will be the guests of the Israeli Navy from May 29-June 4. A press conference took place aboard the Spanish freighter after the ships docked, held by the commander of the NATO force, Brigadier General Teodoro Lopez-Calderon and the commander of the Israeli Naval base in Haifa, Brigadier General Yochai Ben-Yosef. EDO Corporation received a contract from the Israeli Navy to purchase its advanced-technology ALOFTS undersea-warfare sensor. ALOFTS was selected based upon the Israeli Navy's past experience with EDO's sonar systems and after a thorough review of ALOFTS' specifications and capabilities. The contract is valued at more than $7 million, plus options for additional systems. The EDO Model 980 ALOFTS system is a low-frequency, active, towed-array system that represents the latest, most advanced sonar technology. It provides a long-range sensor capability that will counter the threat of extremely quiet submarines operating in either shallow or deep water.

Israel's navy will receive two new sophisticated German-made submarines, IRNA reports. The submarines were built by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. The German government refused Israel's request to cover the $1.1 billion price tag for the construction of the submarines, but did agree to provide one-third of the construction costs from its household budget, estimated at around $387 million.
