Danish ship designers OSK continue to cement its position within naval ship design with the establishment of OSK Defense – a strategic department solely designated to specialized naval design, both nationally and internationally. Heading the new department will be Commander Lars Povl Jensen, who has more than twenty years’ experience in international and arctic naval operations.In October 2022, the Danish government earmarked €5 billion for investments in the Royal Danish Navy.

The Swedish-built Combat Boat 90 (CB 90) has established itself with military forces around the world as both a warrior and a workhorse. The 52-foot boats first entered service in 1991 as troop carriers with the Swedish Marines, which is still procuring them. There are more than 250 operating worldwide today.These rugged boats are optimized for high-speed / shallow-draft operations in and around Sweden’s many coastal islands, but they have also proven to be ideal for a variety of other applications and operating environments.The CB 90 is 52 feet long, with a draft of just 2 feet 7 inches.

When will the first fully digitized, autonomous and environmentally friendly ship be ready to sail? The answer is uncertain but the Danish Maritime Authority’s ShippingLab project aims to have most of the technical and managerial challenges solved in as little as two years from now. Denmark said on Friday it welcomed a British government proposal for a European-led naval mission to ensure safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and would consider a military maritime contribution.Britain has sought to assemble the mission in Hormuz, used by tankers carrying about a fifth of the world's oil, following Iran's seizure of a British-flagged ship in what London said was an act of "state piracy".The initiative won initial support from Denmark, France and Italy…

Later this year a major oil and chemical protection exercise dubbed SCOPE 2017 will be carried out in Norway. A joint project including major European and Scandinavian stakeholders, the simulated response to a combined oil and chemical spill aims to foster clearer communication and coordination of spill response across agencies and physical country boundaries. A joint oil and chemical protection exercise between the Nordic countries will involve more than 300 personnel and 30 vessels, making for one of the largest projects of its kind in European history. An increasing level of shipping traffic has led to a growing fear of accidents and an adverse risk picture. The accident involving M/V Full City in July 2009 on the coast of Langesund illustrated the crucial need for preparedness in dealing with accidents across national borders. The Royal Australian Navy’s reputation for delivering world-class training received a boost when five members of the Royal Danish Navy visited HMAS Albatross to learn how the Fleet Air Arm teaches pilots and aircrew. Led by Commander Aksel Primdahl, the group studied the Australian experience of introducing the MH-60R Seahawk and integrating it into the Fleet. The delegation visited the state-of-the-art Helicopter Aircrew Training System (also known as HATS) facility, which will include three full-flight simulators and 15 EC-135 training helicopters when operational next year. Commander of the facility, Commander Bruce Willington, said the Danes were impressed by the modern facility, describing it as professional and innovative.

Standing near Greenland's Jakobshavn glacier, the reputed source of the iceberg that sank the Titanic over a century ago, U.S Secretary of State John Kerry saw evidence of another looming catastrophe. Giant icebergs broken off from the glacier seemed to groan as they drifted behind him, signaling eventual rising oceans that scientists warn will submerge islands and populated coastal region. DNV Petroleum Services (DNVPS) has appointed Tejs Beltov as the new Chief Operating Officer for Europe. Beltov, who joined the company on May 1, 2014, replaces Bill Stamatopoulos who has taken on a new challenge as Group Commercial Director. Stamatopoulos will develop and execute the company’s commercial and marketing strategy, manage customer relationships and drive business development. Beltov is a graduate of the Technical University of Denmark with extensive experience in the maritime industry.

The maritime security intelligence company Risk Intelligence is joined by six maritime industry leaders who will serve as the company’s board of advisors. The board is led by the former fleet commander of the Royal Navy, Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent. The board held its first meeting in London on 11 June 2013. “The six members bring a staggering amount of experience into the board, from navies, shipping companies, offshore, oil and gas, and classification societies,” said Hans Tino Hansen, CEO of Risk Intelligence. Risk Intelligence said it set up the advisory board to strengthen the strategic outlook and develop the company.

Substantial simulator delivery with significant expansion options included. The Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO), acting on behalf of three naval training centres in Denmark, has chosen Kongsberg Maritime to supply sophisticated new bridge simulation facilities. The contract, which was signed in Ballerup, Denmark on 14th December 2011, was awarded to Kongsberg Maritime as part of a public tender issued to support the Royal Danish Navy’s training capabilities through advanced simulation technology.

After busy months on patrol in the Gulf of Aden and Somali Basin, a task force of NATO warships on March 12 handed over their counter-piracy mission, (Operation Ocean Shield) to the new task force of NATO ships which had sailed to the area to take up the mission. NATO warships have been conducting counter piracy patrols off the Horn of Africa, an area of strategic importance, since October 2008. On March 12 it was the turn of the five warships from the Standing NATO Maritime Group Two, who currently come from the UK (flagship), Greece, Italy, Turkey and the U.S. to pick up the baton of this ongoing mission. Anteon has been awarded a $15.8 million contract from the Danish Material Command for services to assist the Royal Danish Navy in achieving a mine clearing capability. Under this contract, Anteon will modify its existing A/N37U-1 system produced for the U.S. Navy to support the Royal Danish Navy's 28-meter Minor Ship Drone, a remote controlled surface craft. This is a moored sea mine clearing application. Anteon delivered 50 of these systems to the U.S. Navy from 1993 through 1999 and will be providing 10 systems to the Royal Danish Navy over a four-year period. Joseph M. Offshore Systems Ltd. announced that it has secured a contract valued at approximately $750,000 with the Royal Danish Navy to provide an upgrade to their world leading ECPINS warship navigation software, in addition to a limited hardware upgrade. This will upgrade the Royal Danish Navy systems to the latest version of ECPINS and more significantly to a common software baseline across their Fleet and shore establishments.

After delivery from Karstensens Shipyard, Denmark, the second Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) for the Danish Greenland operation entered official command under the Royal Danish Navy on 16 January. The vessel, which has been named Ejnar Mikkelsen (P571), is built for a wide range of arctic and coastal operations, like its predecessor. The newbuilding is expected to enter North Atlantic service at the end of February 2009 and follows the first vessel, Knud Rasmussen (P570), which was commissioned into the Royal Danish Navy on 18 February 2008.

Moller-Maersk's Odense Steel Shipyard on Feb. 20 to see how the company -- which historically builds large commercial shipping units -- transitioned into the Danish defense industry. “I wanted to get an idea of how a foreign commercial shipbuilder designed and constructed a lead warship -- on budget and on time,” said Winter.

Det Norske Veritas (DNV) has just IMO-approved the biological sewage treatment plant from Gertsen & Olufsen (G&O), a leading Scandinavian developer of a.o. sewage treatment systems targeted for ships and offshore use. The revised guidelines on treatment of black water, IMO MECP 159(55) Resolution, comes into effect on Jan. 1, 2010. As the resolution entails new and significantly stricter standards, it represents a massive challenge to shipbuilders and designers. The guidelines apply to sewage treatment plants on ships of 400 grt and above as well as on smaller ships certified to carry a crew of more than 15. One answer to the technological challenge has surfaced following DNV’s approval of the G&O Bioreactor in accordance with the new IMO resolution.
