Tackling the risks of polar operations and new challenges for future ship design

Citing an increase of cruise operations in polar waters, naval architects and marine engineers OSK-ShipTech A/S has ventured into new strategic business areas addressing the challenges and needs of ship owners and polar cruise operators.

“We definitely see a growing interest from our clients and a commercial business area where we can provide expert consultancy to our client base of ship owners and operators and help them tackle the operational and strategical challenges of polar operations,” said OSK-ShipTech managing director, Anders Ørgård Hansen. “There is a broad spectrum of risks and challenges spanning anything from the practical and operational of itinerary, provisions, winterization, etc. over specific demands for ship design and vessel reinforcements to compliance with legislation such as the Polar Code.”

In cooperation with Ready Risk Consulting, OSK-ShipTech has developed a polar risk management framework mapping polar hazards and assessing related operational and strategic risks.

Principal consultant Rikke Aarøe Carlsen from Ready Risk Consulting explained, “Together with our client, we address each risk area and its relation to and influence on other elements in the risk landscape.”

Also, aside from being a risk consultant, Rikke Aarøe Carlsen is a naval architect with special focus on maritime risks. “Paired with OSK-ShipTech’s team of business strategists, marine engineers, naval architects and experts in the Polar Code, we bring a strong field of competences to provide our clients with expert consultancy and the competitive advantage in polar operations,” Carlsen said.

OSK-ShipTech is among others currently working with Aurora Expeditions on the refurbishment of Polar Pioneer. “Our aim is to assist our clients with complete risk assessment on all the aspects of their operation and design the polar vessels of the future with all modern amenities and cutting edge ship design,” Hansen said.
