Master and Shipping Company Prosecuted For Pilot Ladder Failure

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has successfully prosecuted a ship's master and shipping company after a pilot was injured while embarking on a Panama-flagged general cargo ship.The pilot was attempting to embark the Boshi 58 on May 25, 2023, but was seriously injured when the pilot ladder broke during the transfer.The Boshi 58's master and the shipping company, Fu Ye Shipping, pled guilty and were fined $5,300 and $32,000 respectively for failing to ensure pilot transfer arrangements complied with the relevant Marine Order and the Navigation Act 2012.

Taiwan Navigation Orders Two New Tugs

PT. Graha Trisaka Industri has awarded tug design contracts to Robert Allan Ltd. for a RAmparts 3200-W and a TRAktor 3200-V. The tugs will be built and operated by Taiwan Navigation Co. Ltd. under a long-term charter contract for CPC Corporation, Taiwan.PT. Graha Trisaka Industri is an affiliate of PaxOcean Group, Singapore with the shipyard located in Batam, Indonesia. PaxOcean and Robert Allan Ltd. have worked together successfully on a number of projects including dual fuel tug of RAmparts 2800-DF design for PSA Marine, Singapore. Four other Robert Allan Ltd.

FMC Revokes PVO for French America Line

French America Line Prohibited from Offering, Advertising, or Conducting Passenger CruisesFrench America Line, a domestic passenger vessel operator (PVO), is prohibited from offering, advertising, or conducting cruises following revocation today of its Certificate of Financial Responsibility for Indemnification of Passengers for Nonperformance of Transportation (Certificate (Performance)) by the Federal Maritime Commission.In April 2019, the Commission’s Bureau of Certification and Licensing notified Great Northern & Southern Navigation Co., LLC, which does business as French America Line (FAL), that it intended to revoke the company’s Certificate (Performance). Companies must maintain a Certificate (Performance) to offer passenger services.

Pelita Samudera Buys Handysize Bulker

Indonesian shipping and logistics company Pelita Samudera Shipping (PSS) has bought one bulk carrier from Singapore-based Convivial Navigation Co. Pte.Purchase price of the handysize class MV is USD7.53 million. PSS is settling 20% of the amount in cash and the remaining 80% in PSS shares. VesselsValue places a market value on the ship of $7.62m.The Indonesian company said that the purchase has expanded it Motor Vessel (MV) fleet strength to six. The MV fleet capacity of 28k DWT has been projected with some potential customers, one of which is for transportation of coal and clinker (the main ingredient in cement production).PSS also plans to purchase 2 new sets of Tug and Barge in the second semester of 2019 in addition to MV fleet.

Yang Ming Cuts Losses, Optimizes Fleet

Taiwanese ocean shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation  said that its 3rd quarter net loss after tax for Q3 was USD 30 million, a reduction of 76.16% compared to last quarter, and USD 220 million for the nine-month period.However, in Q3 2018, Yang Ming posted consolidated revenues of USD $1.3 billion, a growth of 15.2% compared to the second quarter of the year.According to a press statement Yang Ming, one of the main reasons for the loss was an “unfavourable supply-demand balance”, with weakening freight rates and escalating bunker prices adding $134 million to the carrier’s operating costs.Meanwhile, the Keelung-based shipper said that it will introduce four 14…

DMA Promotes e-Navigation

Co-hosted by The Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) and IALA, the conference ’e-Navigation Underway’ was held for the 8th time. 150 participants from 5 continents joined the hosts on a conference cruise departing from Denmark earlier this week. ​The debate at the conference was lively with a strong focus on applying digitalization to real world uses. President and CEO at DFDS, Niels Smedegaard, said during his speech at the conference: “We have to speed up on understanding and applying the new possibilities that new technology provides. The development is too rapid for the human mind to keep up. CNCo Orders Remote Monitoring for 35 Vessels

Radio Holland, a global NavCom and service company in the maritime industry, said it has concluded  a maintenance and remote monitoring agreement with The China Navigation Company (CNCo) for 35 vessels. Radio Holland already provides CNCo’s newbuild, multipurpose vessels and bulk carriers with NavCom packages, and the latest agreement now covers the maintenance of this equipment on board 35 vessels. This further cooperation follows a remote monitoring pilot project. Radio Holland will now introduce remote monitoring throughout CNCo’s fleet.

Global Experts Gather for Ship Recycling Seminar

Around 300 people gathered in Tokyo on May 12 to attend a ship recycling seminar held by leading classification society ClassNK. In addition to ClassNK representatives, top industry experts from Asia and Europe discussed the current challenges of ship recycling and what the industry can do to support safe and environmentally sound recycling practices. Koichi Kato, Deputy Director-General for Engineering Affairs, Maritime Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), opened the seminar with a keynote address.

Partnership Seeks to Boost Maritime VSAT for China

SpeedCast International Limited, a global satellite communications and network service provider, and Beijing Marine Communications and Navigation Co. Ltd (MCN), a subsidiary of the China Transport Telecommunications & Information Centre (CTTIC), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Strategic Cooperation (MOU). Under the MOU, MCN and SpeedCast will form a strategic partnership by integrating MCN’s VSAT network in Asia Pacific and SpeedCast’s global VSAT networks to provide global connectivity to the maritime industry. This partnership aims to provide seamless connectivity for both MCN and SpeedCast customers wherever they are, as well as providing a wide portfolio of applications enhancing productivity, crew welfare and safety.

California Fines Shipper for Clean Air Violations

The California Air Resources Board has fined the China Navigation Co. Pte. Ltd. $129,500 for failure to switch its engines over from heavy diesel bunker fuel to cleaner, low-sulfur fuel when close to the California coast, as required by state law. CARB’s Ocean-Going Vessel Fuel regulation is a critical part of California’s plan to attain air quality standards in Southern California and across the state. On December 28, 2012, an ARB inspector found that the vessel Chenan, managed by the China Navigation Co. Pte. Ltd., operated within Regulated California Waters (i.e. 24 miles or less from the coast) on noncompliant heavy fuel oil on 12 separate days (four voyages) between August 5 and December 28, 2012, while en route to and departing from the Port of Los Angeles.

New Bulkers Launched into Fuel-saving Future

One of the first commercial applications of MAN Diesel & Turbo’s new MAN Alpha Kappel FP propeller took place off the coast of China recently when the vessel Elsabeth C, a 58,500-dwt Supramax bulk carrier owned by Frontmarine Co. Ltd – an affiliated and managed company of Lemissoler Navigation Co. Ltd., the Cypriot ship management group – completed its sea trials. The newbuilding is the first in a series of eight sister ships, all featuring single MAN B&W 5S60ME-C8.2 engines with an SMCR 8050 kW at 89 rpm.

Changes in Swire Pacific's Top Deck

Swire Pacific Offshore (SPO) announces a change in leadership with the appointment of a new Managing Director in Singapore. Mr Ron Mathison has taken over the helm as the new Managing Director on Monday, 21st September 2015. Mr Mathison has also been appointed as Director of John Swire & Sons (S.E. Asia) Pte Ltd, with effect from 1st August 2015. Mr Mathison embarked on his career with John Swire & Sons Limited (“Swire”) when he joined Cathay Pacific Airways in 1984 and has more than 30 years of experience within various divisions of the Swire Group. Prior to his new appointment in SPO, he was the Group Managing Director of James Finlay Ltd in UK for the last seven years. Before that, from 2004 to 2008, he was the Director of Cargo in Cathay Pacific Airways.

Chinese-make 2-stroke Wärtsilä Engine Unveiled

The first Wärtsilä two-stroke engine with a high pressure SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system manufactured in China has been introduced. The system is fitted to a 5-cylinder Wärtsilä RT-flex58T-D 2-stroke, low speed engine produced at the Hudong Heavy Machinery Co Ltd (HHM) facilities. The SCR reactor was also manufactured by HHM. This is the first SCR system that complies with the IMO’s Tier III regulations for engine emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx). The Wärtsilä engine with SCR is to be installed in a new 22,000 dwt multi-purpose vessel currently under construction at the Ouhua shipyard on behalf of China Navigation Co (CNCo). The ship, which is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of this year, has been designed to allow sufficient space for the fitting of the SCR.

The vessels will each feature an optimised MacGregor cargo-handling system comprising MacGregor cranes and hatch covers as well as Hatlapa steering gear and electrically-driven variable frequency drive (VFD) Hatlapa deck equipment. (MES) completed and delivered a 56,000 dwt type bulk carrier M.V.Ocean Bright (MES Hull No. 1848) at its Tamano Works on August 7, 2013 to Mingtai Navigation Co., Ltd., Taiwan. Great Lakes Ports Association Elects New Leadership

Members of the American Great Lakes Ports Association (AGLPA) elected new leadership at their annual summer meeting held this year in Oswego, New York. The new president is William Friedman, President & CEO of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority. Dean Haen, director of the Brown County Port & Solid Waste Department in Green Bay, will serve as vice president. The secretary-treasurer position will be held by Paul LaMarre, port director at the Port of Monroe (Michigan). The term of office is two years. Friedman became president and CEO of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority in June 2010. He has more than 25 years of experience in port management, real estate development, international supply chain and multimodal distribution.
