A new international cruise terminal will be operating in Brisbane within two years after Port of Brisbane and Carnival Australia announced they had reached a commercial agreement. The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT) at Luggage Point will be operating by mid-2020 and is expected to generate almost $5 billion in economic value for the Queensland economy alone within 15 years. The amended commercial agreement between Australia’s Port of the Year, Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL) and Australia’s leading cruise organisation, Carnival Australia, follows the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) conditional approval of the project last month.

The Port of Hay Point in Queensland, Australia has kicked off a pilot program to investigate the feasibility of recycling garbage from international ships.Currently, ships' crews separate recyclable garbage on board, but have limited opportunity to offload these materials at Australian ports for recycling. Any garbage that is separated on board is combined when offloaded in Australian ports and has to undergo treatment by autoclave or deep-burial to meet Australia’s biosecurity requirements.

Liberian-flagged containership MSC Kia Ora has been banned from Australian ports for three months after the operator failed to ensure crew were paid their wages in full and on time, and that critical equipment was maintained. The ban was issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), who inspected the ship in the Port of Brisbane on March 14, 2018 after receiving a complaint which alleged that crew had been underpaid. During the inspection AMSA found evidence that crew had been underpaid from November 2017 to February 2018 and were owed more than AU$53,000 (US$40,800).

A Papua New Guinea-flagged cargo ship Kiunga Chief has been banned from entering or using Australian ports for three months after the ship was detained for a third time in less than 18 months due to the failure of its operators to safely and effectively manage the operations of the vessel. “Substandard ships will not be tolerated in Australia,” said Stephen Curry, acting general manager of operations at the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). A picket of Hutchison ports in Sydney and Brisbane has entered fourth day after the Maritime Workers Union vowed to continue defying a Fair Work order to cease industrial action. The picketers say that the power to the site has been cut in a bid to move them off. At least 29 unions have been picketing the Hutchison Ports Australia site since the company sacked 97 workers in Brisbane and Sydney via text message and email four days ago, reports The News. Maritime Union of Australia Queensland state secretary Bob Carnegie says the company has now cut power to a substation near their site to try to break the picket. “That’s the sort of animals we’re dealing with,” he told picketers. Protesting workers have refused to unload the cargo ship to arrive at Hutchison Port operations.

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has received an order from DP World Australia to deliver two new Kalmar automatic stacking cranes (ASCs) for its semi-automated terminal in Brisbane. The cranes will join a fleet of 14 Kalmar ASCs at Fisherman Islands Terminal, bringing the number of modules servicing container trade to eight and increasing capacity by 14 percent to 720,000 TEU. The new ASCs will be delivered fully erected in 2016 and they are expected to be commissioned in January 2017. DP World Australia's Managing Director and CEO, Paul Scurrah, said the investment at the Port of Brisbane is a strong signal of the company's commitment to Queensland trade. "Productivity at our Fisherman Islands Terminal has grown from strength to strength," Mr Scurrah said.

The Port of Melbourne Corporation has told DP World Australia that it wants to increase rent at the terminal by up by 800 per cent of the current amount, reports local media. It also comes as the Victorian government prepares the Port of Melbourne for sale. The move by the Victorian Government has sparked warnings of job cuts as well as economic damage to the state. The trucking industry fears it may have to carry much of the weight of the possible hefty rent hike. The port currently charges about $40 million dollars a year in rent to DP World and Asciano. It is understood that DP World has previously paid about $16 per square metre and the increase will take it to $120 per square metre.
