Viva Energy Australia announced the launch of its new very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO), developed to meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) new regulations on fuel sulphur content.The new regulations will limit the sulphur content in marine fuels to 0.5% from the current level of 3.5%, in a move to reduce sulphur oxide emissions globally. PANOLIN HLP SYNTH 32 is the first and so far only eco-friendly hydraulic oil to feature in the Bosch Rexroth RDE 90245 Fluid Rating List. “Yet again, we have proven that our biodegradable products such as PANOLIN HLP SYNTH 32 also meet the highest industry requirements,” said Patrick Lämmle, Chairman of the Board of Directors of PANOLIN International. “PANOLIN HLP SYNTH is the first rapidly biodegradable hydraulic oil to obtain the Fluid Rating (ISO 15380 in combination with RFT-APU-CL test),” Lämmle said.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved improved shipbuilding standards aimed at passenger and cargoships. The new construction rules, designed to increase a vessel's chance of surviving an accident, were agreed at the IMO's committee on stability and load lines headed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa). The new standards will go into effect in November and will apply to ships with keel laying after January 2009. Among the new rules is one concerning lubricating-oil circulation tanks, which must be kept a minimum distance of 500 millimetres from the keel line of the vessel to prevent the oil escaping in the case of a grounding leading to engine failure. Guidelines for the crew will also advise on how to ensure a vessel survives in an accident.

Iveco Motors Of North America, a subsidiary of Iveco Motors is making waves in the marine industry with the introduction of the NEF 370, the first engine in its new line of marine engines for the pleasure craft industry, from the NEF series of diesel engines. The six cylinder, high performance NEF 370 model features an electronic common rail fuel injection system. With 370 hp and weighing just 1,312 lbs, this engine has a power to weight ratio of 3.54lbs/hp. In addition, the design of the four-stroke NEF engine requires less routine maintenance. "Diesel is becoming the preferred choice in marine power as manufacturers and boaters alike realize the benefits," says Vincenzo Perrone, General Manager of Iveco Motors of North America.

Philadelphia Gear Corporation announces an agreement with the Rowan Companies, Inc., of Vicksburg, Miss., to supply propulsion reduction gearing for the Gorilla VIII drill rig. Gorilla VIII is the latest addition to Rowan’s line of self-propelled jack-up drill rigs. Philadelphia Gear will provide Rowan with marine reduction gears, model 84 DHMGH. The gearing will be used to transmit 1500 hp from each of 4 variable speed DC motors at 1050 RPM to a fixed pitch propeller turning 280 RPM in the twin-screw installation. The gear drives for port and starboard, which are identical in this application, will be arranged for motors spaced 84 in. apart, two forward of the gears and two aft.
