Exploring Class Approvals, Supported by CAD

ABS software supports designs across most vessel sectors. This pilot project focused on tug and barge designs, producing promising results.Jensen Maritime, the naval architecture and marine engineering arm of Crowley Maritime Corp, and ABS have completed a precedent-setting pilot project using three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) models to support plan reviews for class approval. In what is believed to be an industry first, the innovative pilot was not proprietary to specific brands of CAD software, allowing designers to use the versions with which they are most familiar, or those that are best suited to the design project.Saving Time and MoneyIn eliminating the need to create 2D drawings to submit for the class design-review process…

New Approaches to Inland Infrastructure Renewal

A new engineered repair system for seawalls is based on fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) technology that has been used for several years to repair and strengthen worn and damaged marine piles made of timber or concrete using specialized composites. Pictured here are worn bridge piles being wrapped with FRP laminates in St. Louis

Economical repairs are being applied to rapidly corroding steel and concrete structures in U.S. ports and inland waterways. The new repair systems – PileMedic & SPiRe – might just be what the doctor ordered. Recent advancements in using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) for major structural repair and strengthening of submerged marine piles made of concrete or even timber has led to an economical, less invasive infrastructure repair solution for inland port development compared to current systems.

Fugitive Emissions: The New Regulatory Elephant in the Room

W&O Supply and Chesterton team up to reduce harmful emissions out in front to the EPA’s monitoring program. It’s less expensive than you might think. From the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency comes the September 2014 news of a barge operator fined for releasing dangerous gas into the atmosphere. The UK-based firm was made to pay almost £111,000 in fines and costs as a result of emitting unsafe levels of a gas; in this case, hydrogen sulphide (H2S). And, while an investigation by the MCA showed a number of health and safety failings by the operator, the bottom line was that not enough was done to stop the offending vapors from escaping into the atmosphere.

Moose Boats’ Fire Rescue Catamaran

Specialty workboats redefined: versatility, value and multi-mission capabilities, all rolled into one affordable hull. In a world where small to medium sized municipalities and port authorities have to make every dollar go a long, long way, any opportunity to leverage just one hull over multiple mission sets grabs a lot of attention. Nevertheless, Job 1 on that set of requirements is arguably the need to provide robust firefighting capabilities. Sure, everyone would like to have the ability to pump 15,000 gallons per minute (gpm), but at the same time, not everyone can afford it. Nor does everyone have the available draft to support such a (larger) platform.

Mammoet Salvage has proposed a safe and innovative salvage solution.

Repower: Bringing New Life To Older Vessels

The decision to repower a vessel is a multi-faceted one, and it can be safely assumed that no two decisions in this arena are exactly the same. Whether it's a crewboat that needs new power units to accommodate a new scope of operation; extending the life of an old, but otherwise stable boat; a rip and refit to replace under performing engines; or as a simple factor in the overall vessel conversion equation - the decision to install new engines on a vessel entails a significant financial investment for the owner. This year has seen a number of significant and unique marine repowerings. The vessels covered in this report are unique in that they range from a 149-passenger tour boat to an 846-ft. long military freighter powered by gas turbine engines.

W&O: An Engineered Ascension

W&O Supply is a maverick. What’s so exciting about pipes and valves, you ask? How about growing from $22 million in revenue per year to $75 million in the last 13 years. In today’s rapid-paced industrial environment, companies that stand still will more than likely get trampled. David Turner, W&O’s president and CEO, realized this many years ago, and the company known for providing pipes and valves for the commercial and naval shipbuilding markets embarked on the path to provide engineered solutions. W&O Supply was founded in 1975 and by its own estimation is the largest marine piping supplier in the U.S. It boasts a wide customer base representing all aspects of the maritime industry, including the U.S.
