Irwin F. Edenzon, the retired president of Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division, accepted the Navy League of the United States' Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Award last night. The Navy League presented the award at the annual Sea-Air-Space Black Tie Reception and Banquet at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The Nimitz award honors an industry leader who has made a major contribution to the nation's maritime strength or enhanced national security.

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of Coast Guard members and their families, will hold its 20th annual tribute to the United States Coast Guard Seventh District on November 8th, 2013, at the Renaissance Vinoy Hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida. During the event, the Coast Guard Foundation will provide a special honor to the members of a Clearwater-based helicopter crew for the heroism, dedication and aviation professionalism they displayed on January 18, 2013 while saving the lives of seven mariners from the 170-foot research vessel Seaprobe, 230 nautical miles west of Clearwater, Florida.

The National Security Cutter (NSC) 'Hamilton' was christend by Linda Kapral Papp, the wife of the US Coast Guard Commandant, at a ceremony attended by nearly 1000 guests at the shipyard. Adm. More than 153 years after it was lost in a violent collision at sea, government and university maritime archaeologists have identified the wreck of the ship Robert J. Walker, a steamer that served in the U.S. Coast Survey, a predecessor agency of NOAA. The Walker, while now largely forgotten, served a vital role as a survey ship, charting the Gulf Coast ‒ including Mobile Bay and the Florida Keys ‒ in the decade before the Civil War. It also conducted early work plotting the movement of the Gulf Stream along the Atlantic Coast.

Chris Bandy, a Coast Guard auxiliarist in Bayfield, Wis., was recognized as the 2012 Coast Guard 'Auxiliarist of the Year' at a recent ceremony held in San Diego, Calif. Adm. Robert J. Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division launched the company's fourth U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter (NSC), Hamilton (WMSL 753), on Saturday. "Launching a ship involves quite a bit of logistics, and our team pulled this off in a very safe and efficient manner," said Ingalls' NSC Program Manager Jim French. "It's a weeklong process to first translate the ship across land into our floating drydock and then going through an extensive ship-wide check-out process to launch.

The AdvanFort Company has volunteered its counter-piracy vessels in the waters in and around the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean to join the U.S. Coast Guard-coordinated Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER). The AdvanFort fleet, which has vessels strategically positioned in key sea lanes surrounding the High Risk Area (HRA), is now “on plot” in the official USCG program, a computer-based voluntary global ship reporting system that is used by search and rescue authorities around the world to arrange for assistance to persons in distress at sea.

'Sustainable Maritime Development'  will be the thrust of the 2013 World Maritime Day Conference in New York in October. Clay Maitland, Founding Chairman of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), has announced the program for the 2013 North American World Maritime Day Observance being presented by NAMEPA and the United States Coast Guard. The conference is designed to bring forward updates on environmental stewardship, promoting a safety culture, new technologies and innovation, maritime education and training.

Ingalls Shipbuilding authenticates the keel of U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutter 'Hamilton' (WMSL 753) with sponsor's intitials welded in. Mrs. Linda Kapral Papp, wife of Adm. Robert J. Papp Jr., commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, is the ship's sponsor. Her initials were welded on a keel plate that will be part of the ship as long as it remains in the operational fleet. Ingalls has delivered three NSCs, the flagships of the Coast Guard's cutter fleet. They are designed to replace the 378‐foot Hamilton-class high-endurance cutters, which entered service during the 1960s.

Vice Adm. Sally Brice-O’Hara was relieved by Vice Adm. John P. Currier as vice commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard during a military change of watch ceremony held here Friday morning at Fort Lesley J. Stonington, Conn. – The Coast Guard Foundation announced the financial support of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the Law of the Sea Institute of California's Berkeley School of Law’s Leadership for the Arctic conference, which will take place on April 12 and 13, 2012, in New London, Connecticut.
