Onshore Funding for US Offshore Wind

Most of the media coverage of offshore wind development in the United States focuses on the leases of the offshore areas where the wind turbines will be located. However, equally important is the landside dimension of these projects, including the manufacture, installation, maintenance and operation of the turbines. Several awards made in the last two rounds of funding under the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) show how offshore wind now offers an additional direction of port development for which funding is available.

Equinor, BP Hit Key Milestone for New York Offshore Wind Projects

Equinor and BP on Friday announced the finalization of the Purchase and Sale Agreements (PSAs) with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), for Empire Wind 2 and Beacon Wind 1 offshore wind projects.Empire Wind is located 15-30 miles southeast of Long Island and spans 80,000 acres, with water depths of between 65 and 131 feet. Equinor, BP JV Picks Vestas' Giant 15MW Turbines for New York Offshore Wind Projects

Offshore wind turbine maker will deliver its giant 15MW wind turbines for Equinor and BP joint venture's offshore wind farms in New York.Vestas said Monday that, Empire Offshore Wind, a joint venture between Equinor and BP,  had named it as the preferred turbine supplier for the 2.1 GW Empire Wind 1 and Empire Wind 2 offshore wind projects in New York, USA. "This is one of the largest preferred supplier agreements to be announced in the USA," Vestas said.Vestas will provide 138 V236-15.0 MW turbines for Empire Wind 1 and 2, located 15-30 miles off the coast of Long Island.

Waterford’s Tugboat Roundup Celebrates 20 Years

A modest event designed as a get-together for commercial workboat operators in upstate New York is now celebrating 20 years as a three-day community festival.On September 11, 1999, local resident John Callaghan had an idea to bring in some friends who ran tugs on the Hudson River and NYS Canal System for a quick one-day get together, right at the entrance to the famed Erie Canal. US Program Helps Ports Assess Cybersecurity

HudsonAnalytix, Inc. and its subsidiary HudsonCyber have completed a U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) Cargo Handling Cooperative Program (CHCP) grant to perform cybersecurity capability assessment workshops at three U.S. ports. HudsonAnalytix’s HACyberLogix-informed assessment approach enabled these ports to cost-effectively assess their entire organizational cybersecurity capabilities and identify cybersecurity capability vulnerabilities. The results from these workshops will support MARAD CHCP in leading the adoption of cyber risk management best practices across the U.S. port industry.

U.S. Awards $61.8 Mln for Port Projects

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Fox today announced 40 awards totaling nearly $500 million in funding for the  FY 2016 Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants. Of the 585 applications submitted totaling $9.3 billion in requests, six awards totaling $61.8 million – or about 12.36 percent of the total funding – are going to commercial seaports or projects that directly aid the efficient movement of goods to and from America’s ports. Port applications totaled 9 percent, or 53, of the total 585 submitted. In his written statement, Sec. Foxx said, “For the eighth year running, TIGER will inject critical infrastructure dollars into communities across the country.

New Terminal to Provide US Port of Albany Crude Oil Storage

Buckeye Partners, sign a multi-year agreement with an Irving Oil subsidiary for multi-million barrel storage facility in Port of Albany on the Hudson River. The approximately 1.8-million barrel storage facility located within the Port of Albany along the Hudson River is expected to begin handling crude oil on November 1, 2012. Buckeye plans to make modifications to the Albany terminal that, once completed, will allow the terminal to handle both crude oil and ethanol unit-trains with a total capacity in excess of 135,000 barrels per day. "Rail transport has become a critical component of the logistics chain as domestic crude oil production has increased significantly," said Clark C. Smith, Buckeye's President and Chief Executive Officer.

CMC Joins Legal Action, NY Ballast Regs

The Chamber of Marine Commerce, along with a number of other industry stakeholders, are joining forces to take legal action against the state of New York's proposed new ballast water regulations. The other parties joining in the lawsuit include American Great Lakes Ports Association, Canadian Shipowners Association, Federal Marine Terminals, Canfornav, Polska Zegluga Morska, Port of Oswego and Port of Albany Commission. During the past few months, four Great Lakes states (New York, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio) have issued new ballast water regulations, joining Michigan and Minnesota, both of whom already had ballast water regulations.

Port of Albany Reports Increase in Container Traffic

Mayor Gerald D. Jennings today announced that, in its first six months, the Port of Albany’s new container service has resulted in more than 325 containers passing through the Port, generating additional work for longshore labor, and successfully opening an exciting new chapter for business at the Port. “It has been a busy six months,” Mayor Jennings said. “Since April, over 325 containers have been handled at the Port, which is great news for our longshoremen, and promises a very bright future for Port of Albany. The new container cargo at the Port includes artificial Christmas trees, olive oil, tile, safety products and logs. In addition to this cargo, the Port of Albany continues to receive all of its traditional cargo including grain, molasses, heavy lift equipment and wood pulp.

The tugboat Powhatan, operated by Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., leads Donjon's 1,000-ton-capacity derrick barge the Chesapeake, the largest floating crane on the East coast, and two laden Lockwood Marine tug/barge units southbound in the ice-laden Hudson River from the Port of Albany in late January. The Donjon tugboat, Mary Alice, provides escort and added ice breaking capacity for the flotilla. The flotilla had just completed loading of General Electric manufactured turbines, generators and rotors onto barges for the domestic market. The 250-mile round trip on the Hudson was often through 20 inches of ice.

NY/NJ Port Authority Launches New Cargo Distribution Plan

The Port Authority launched a unique barge and rail cargo distribution network that will provide jobs and economic activity for the region, speed the flow of goods to consumer markets in the region and help reduce highway truck traffic. The Port of Albany will become the first Northeast port to participate in the program. The Port Inland Distribution Network will move containerized cargo by barge or rail between marine terminal facilities in the New York-New Jersey area and regional terminals in New York, New Jersey and three other Northeast states. Port of Albany to Get $3.3M for Container Barge Service
