Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley Repairs Completed

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley returned to homeport at Coast Guard Base Kodiak, Alaska, on Thursday, following an extended seven-month dry dock maintenance period in Seattle.While in dry dock, the crew and contractors successfully completed more than $6 million worth of repairs.The engineering department oversaw 76 work items including major overhauls on the cutter’s controllable pitch propeller system, speed reducers, rudders, and boilers, along with inspections of fuel, sewage, and water tanks.

Dubai Reopens For Crew Changes

The Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) announced it is allowing crew changes to resume across all ports and anchorage areas in the region after crew changes in the major global shipping hub had been paused due to the coronavirus outbreak.Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions and border closures imposed by governments around the world have caused significant hurdles to crew changes and left hundreds of thousands of seafarers stranded onboard ships or unable to join ships.

Algeciras Hits Recond in Vessel Movement

APM Terminals Algeciras hits a new Port Moves Per Hour (PMPH) record for a vessel berthed at Juan Carlos I berth. On Monday, 25th of March, 187,82  PMPH were registered on MSC Kalina.The Operations Department of the largest terminal in the Mediterranean confirmed that this is the best result since MSC Ditte called in September 2017. Back then it registered 183,64 PMPH.MSC Kalina is 366 meters long and 51 meters wide, and has capacity to carry 13,798 containers measured in 20 feet units (TEUs).Nine cranes worked on the vessel, which is not only a milestone in the terminal’s history, but also the result of a great planning and execution teamwork.This vessel runs on the AE6 service, arriving from Suez on its way to Antwerp.

Brunswick, Mercury Marine to Aid Mercy Ships

When the Africa Mercy, the world’s largest private hospital ship, provides its next field service in Cameroon, Africa, it will do so with a new dive boat and several new Mercury Marine outboard engines for the ship’s dive and rescue operations thanks to a recent donation from Brunswick Corporation and its engine subsidiary, Mercury Marine. Over the last 12 years, Schneider has worked in the cruise ship segment of the marine industry as fuel and energy optimization manager (Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises), superintendent engineer (Celebrity Cruises), and as vessel manager for ResidenSea’s residential passenger vessel The World. In this position, he was responsible for the overall management of the vessel within the marine operations department reporting to both WSM and to ResidenSea's Senior Management.

ABB’s OCTOPUS for Torvald Klaveness vessels

ABB’s OCTOPUS marine software will be installed on three new Torvald Klaveness vessels to help them meet incoming emissions regulations. The OCTOPUS reporting software is compliant with the IMO Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) and supports future European Union Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) rules. OCTOPUS gathers information from onboard sensors and gives insight into key performance parameters, such as fuel efficiency, allowing Klaveness to optimize fleet-wide performance. The purpose of a SEEMP is to establish a mechanism for a company and/or a ship to improve the energy efficiency of a ship's operation. OCTOPUS aids this process by measuring and displaying important vessel fuel consumption and torque related Key Performance Indicators.

Aberdeen Harbor Names Harbor Master, Marine Manager

Aberdeen Harbor Board said it has completed the restructuring of its Marine Operations Department with the internal appointment of Captain Jeff Gaskin as new Harbor Master and Alexandra McIntosh as Marine Manager. Gaskin, formerly the Harbor’s Marine Superintendent, has been appointed Harbor Master following the retirement of Captain Ray Shaw. Gaskin has 26 years’ experience within the maritime sector. He started his career as a cadet with Louis Dreyfus Shipping in 1990 and enjoyed spells with both PNTL and Cunard before ending his seagoing career with Vector Offshore in Aberdeen.

Foxx Names New Members to Maritime Industry Advisory Panel

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the appointment of 29 new members to the Marine Transportation System National Advisory Committee (MTSNAC). Established in 2010, MTSNAC is comprised of leaders from commercial transportation firms, ship construction, repair and recycling, trade associations, state and local public entities, labor organizations, academics, and environmental groups that advise the Secretary and the Maritime Administration on policies to ensure that the U.S. Marine Transportation System is capable of responding to projected trade increases. The Committee advises the Secretary on solutions to impediments hindering effective use of short sea transportation and other matters as the Secretary determines.

Pelindo III to Receive 15 Tugs in Indonesia

In early 2015, Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver, Canada was awarded a contract to provide four customized versions of its distinctive RAzer series designs of ASD tugboats to the Indonesia Port Corporation, “PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (PERSERO)”, commonly known as Pelindo III. While Robert Allan Ltd. had long been very active in the Asian market, these designs were its first directly for a company from Indonesia, a country estimated to employ more than 2,000 tug boats.

Maersk Line Shifts Asia HQ from Singapore to Hong Kong

As part of the organisational changes announced last year, Maersk Line has shifted its Asia head office to Hong Kong from Singapore, reducing the number of regional offices to seven from eight. Maersk's two Asia regions, Asia Pacific and North Asia  (China, Korea and Japan), have now become one. Prior to this merger, Hong Kong has already served as its North Asia headquarters since 2008. Following the merger, Maersk's Singapore operations will become a country cluster office that will oversee its Southeast Asian operations, while its Hong Kong office will serve as the headquarters of its combined Asia-Pacific operations. The HQ for the new Asia/Pacific region in Hong Kong will be headed by Robert van Trooijen.

More than 100 Graduate from SUNY Maritime

More than 100 students crossed the stage to receive their degrees at State University of New York Maritime College Jan. 29. Graduates represent 15 fields of study, a quarter of them at the graduate level. More than 60 of them will also graduate with U.S. Coast Guard licenses, the necessary certification to sail on an American ship as part of the merchant marine. “Some of you will be sailing on your license for the first time. Some will be working in other areas of the maritime industry and others may be pursuing other opportunities,” said RADM Michael Alfultis, president of SUNY Maritime. SUNY Maritime’s graduates come from 15 New York counties, 12 other states and three other countries.

The State University of New York Maritime College will confer the honorary degree of doctor of science degree on Morton S. Bouchard III, the president and CEO of Bouchard Transportation Company, Inc., during winter 2016 commencement exercises Friday, January 29. Mort Bouchard is his family's fourth generation to manage Bouchard Transportation Company, Inc., the largest privately owned ocean-going petroleum barge company in the United States. IHC Services Secures Dredger Repair Contract

IHC Services, a subsidiary of Dutch shipbuilder and repairer Royal IHC, informs it has secured an order for a renovation project for a dredging vessel owned by Huta Marine Works Ltd in Saudi Arabia. The contract calls for work on the HUTA 14 self-propelled cutter suction dredger (SPCSD) to be carried out by IHC Middle East based in Dubai and the Service Operations department in The Netherlands for a renovation that involves the replacement of three large diesel engines, as well as the electrical installation for the underwater pump drive.

Russian Ship Collides with Icelandic Coast Guard Vessels

The Russian tall ship Kruzenshtern collided with the Icelandic Coastguard patrol ships Þór and Týr, which were docked at the quayside. Both Icelandic vessels sustained damage. “These things can happen when a big ship is approaching the quay, or leaving it. Nobody was injured,” the Coastguard’s Ásgrímur Ásgrímsson told Vísir, philosophically. “The police have been called and the maritime accident investigators and witness statements have been taken. The incident took place on June 11 when the ship was on her way out of the port. The STS Kruzenshtern, which has been docked in Reykjavík Harbour for the past few days, was on its way out when it ran into trouble. All the three ships were damaged.

ADB Okays $30mln for Pak LNG Terminal

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $30 million project loan to Engro Elengy Terminal Private Limited, a special purpose company which will build Pakistan’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal at the Port Qasim. Besides the ADB, the International Finance Corporation is likely to provide $20 million and local banks another $50 million. The rest of the project financing will come from equity proceeds of $33.3 million, for a total cost of $133.3 million, including contingencies. The $30 million loan is to be used to build and operate the regasification facility. The fuel, suitable for use at most of the country’s combi¬ned cycle power plants, will be supplied to the state-owned Sui Southern Gas Comp¬any’s distribution network via a new high pressure pipeline.
