Port of Tacoma Commission Authorizes 2004 Budget

Closing 2003, a year in which the Port of Tacoma projects a record 1.73 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent 'containers') and projects a record $83.8 million in total revenue, the Port Commission has authorized a 2004 budget designed to continue the Port's focus on long-term investments in facilities, regional economic development and the environment. The $194.7 million budgeted for 2004 capital improvements represents the first year of the Port's five-year, $321.3 million Capital Improvement Program (CIP). Port of Tacoma Authorizes Budget

AAPA to Honor Senator Murray

U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) has been selected as Port Person of the Year by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), the organization representing public ports throughout the Western Hemisphere. It is AAPA's most prestigious annual award, honoring an individual whose outstanding work or service has made a significant contribution to public port authorities and/or maritime commerce. The award will be presented to Senator Murray on March 23 at 8:30 a.m. during AAPA's annual Spring Conference, held at the Washington, D.C. Park Hyatt Hotel. The Port of Seattle, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the Port of Tacoma nominated Murray for the Port Person of the Year honor, which was ultimately decided by AAPA's Executive Committee upon review of all nominations.

Port of Tacoma Picks New Director

The Port of Tacoma Commission today selected Timothy J. Farrell as the Port's Executive Director, effective January 1, 2005. Farrell has served as the Port of Tacoma's Deputy Executive Director since 2000 and as Acting Executive Director since July 1, 2004. Andrea Riniker, who has served as the Port's Executive Director since 1997, will continue on in a transitional role until January 1, 2005. She will work with the Port Commission, and travel with Farrell and Port of Tacoma Commission President Clare Petrich to meet with customers to assure a smooth changeover to Farrell's leadership. Before joining the Port of Tacoma four years ago, Farrell, 38, was Deputy Port Director of Business & Administration for Massport, Boston.

Port of Tacoma Posts Record Year

generated operating revenue of $72.9 million, up 19 percent from 2001. previous record was set in 2000 at $62.3 million. Port of Tacoma Doubling Growth Rate of West Coast Ports

Following a record-breaking year, container volumes at Port of Tacoma continue to grow rapidly. Through the end of May, the Port's total container throughput is 28 percent ahead of the same period in 2002 -- more than double the average growth at other West Coast ports (roughly 13 percent). "These numbers are remarkable," said Andrea Riniker, the Port's Executive Director. "All 2003 projections pointed to moderate growth after last year's record volumes, but our throughput has never slowed, and we continue to set weekly records for intermodal lifts as we build for another record-breaking year. All of our international carriers have posted significant increases in container throughput.
