But the leader of the inland tank-barge sector is not growing for growth’s sake: a deeper look at the numbers shows a disciplined strategy at work.“Kirby is definitely the big gorilla in the inland barge market,” affirmed Jefferies analyst Randy Giveans. Indeed, Houston-headquartered Kirby Corp has been extremely active buying fleets over the past few years, most recently acquiring the 63 tank barges of Cenac Marine in March for $244 million.

Port Corpus Christi to benefit from LNG partnership with China

Port Corpus Christi officials are confident that the agreement signed between Cheniere Energy of Houston and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) will bring increased traffic to the port, according to the San Antonio Business Journal. Officials from Cheniere accompanies President Trump on his tour to China and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese company. CNPC is the largest gas and oil supplier and producer in China and is also one of the largest providers of oilfied services.

US$44-million Houston Ship Channel Expansion Planned

Houston-based Oiltanking Partners LP to expand its terminal on the Houston Ship Channel to meet demand to export liquefied petroleum gas. Expansion plans include a new vessel dock and upgrades to existing ones and should be completed by the end of 2014. The expansion will take the loading capacity from its current rate of four million barrels per month to about 7.5 million barrels per month, reports Houston Business Journal. Oiltanking will provide import and export services from the expansion exclusively to Houston-based Enterprise Products Partners LP. Expansion plans include a new vessel dock and upgrades to existing ones and should be completed by the end of 2014.

Porter Recognized with Impact Award

The University of North Florida (UNF) Transportation & Logistics (T&L) Flagship Program recognized Tami Porter, Director, East Coast & Gulf Terminal Operations of Horizon Lines, LLC, as the recipient of the Impact Award for Community Partner. Ms. Porter was presented the honor at an awards ceremony on May 1 in Jacksonville, FL. Porter was recognized for her contributions to the UNF T&L Flagship Program, including her work evaluating industry case competitions and participating in panel discussions for students. Todd Shipyards Gets $3.1M Overhaul Contract

Todd Pacific Shipyards Corp. has received a $3.1 million contract to overhaul the USNS Guadalupe, a oiler naval vessel that provides fuel for Navy ships at sea, Puget Sound Business Journal reported. According to Todd, a subsidiary of Seattle-based Todd Shipyards Corp., the contract work includes: tank cleaning and inspection, galley equipment replacement, habitability space repairs, main engine overhaul work, replacement of the low pressure air compressor, and various other machinery, electrical, ventilation, and piping items. The Guadalupe is expected to arrive at Todd's shipyard on April 22 for its 30-day overhaul. Source: Business Journal

Carlyle, Riverstone to Invest $450M in Oil and Gas Firm

The Carlyle Group and a New York-based private equity firm have committed a $450m investment to Dynamic Offshore Resources LLC, a new oil and gas company that will focus on the acquisition and development of producing properties in the Gulf of Mexico, the Washington Business Journal reported. Joining D.C.-based Carlyle in the Dynamic Offshore Resources investment is Riverstone Holdings LLC, a private equity firm founded in 2000 that focuses on certain parts of the energy industry. Riverstone has committed more than $6 billion, to date, in more than 41 investments. The founders and management team at Dynamic Offshore Resources also plan to invest up to an additional $50m in the firm.

Jacksonville Mayor Tours Navy Construction Projects

Jacksonville's Mayor John Peyton came on board Naval Air Station Jacksonville (NAS JAX) Jan. 7 to tour some of the city's top construction projects. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southeast is building four projects on the Jacksonville Business Journal's top 28 commercial construction projects of 2007 – three of them on board NAS JAX. "It's impressive what's going on here. Initially, I really didn't understand the magnitude of the projects here," Peyton said during his visit to the Navy's largest hangar under construction here. Topping off the list is the $125.9 million state-of-the-art hangar and apron project that will house five P-3C Orion squadrons and a C-130 Hercules logistics squadron.

Old Navy Yard Revitalization Begins

Forest City Washington broke ground recently on The Yards, a 42-acre redevelopment on property that used be part of the Washington Navy Yard. The area, formerly called Southeast Federal Center, will be home to 2,700 residential units, 1.8 million square feet of office and retail space. D.C. officials estimate that the project will have 3,700 residents and add 7,700 jobs, which would generate $450 million in annual paychecks. The project will create a $42m public park on 5.5 acres fronting the Anacostia River. Forest City will construct the park, designed by M. Paul Friedberg and Partners. Hawaii Opposes California Container Tax

The California state legislature is considering a new tax on shipping containers that would cost an estimated $34m a year to Hawaii shippers, The Pacific Business Journal reported. More than 80 percent of goods consumed in Hawaii are produced elsewhere and shipped to the islands, and 90 percent of those are shipped through the California ports of Oakland and Long Beach on the ships of Matson Navigation Co., Horizon Lines and Pasha Hawaii Transport. California State Senate Bill 974 would impose a $30 fee per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit, the standard measure of maritime shipping capacity) on every cargo container traveling between California and Hawaii. Most cargo containers are at two TEUs so it amounts to a $60 container fee in most cases.

Maritime Organizations to Have a Role in Finding New Port Chairman

On the heels of Tampa Port Authority Chairman Steve Pinney announcing his plan to resign from the board, the port has formally begun the process of replacing him. The Port Authority will soon send a formal letter to the Port of Tampa Maritime Industries Association and the Propeller Club confirming Pinney's resignation, effective June 1. From there, the two organizations will come up with a shortlist of nominees that have maritime industry backgrounds, port officials said. Gov. Crist will select Pinney's successor. In the meantime, Pinney will focus on his executive responsibilities at Mosaic Co., which has relocated him to a position at its Plymouth, Minn. headquarters. Source: Tampa Business Journal

Shipbuilders Awarded Training Funds

A pair of grants totaling nearly $58,000 will be used to train 245 workers at two shipbuilders in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., the Business Journal of Milwaukee reported. The Workforce Advancement Training Grants from the Wisconsin Technical College System were awarded to Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) in Green Bay. The funds will be used for training workers from Bay Shipbuilding Co., a manufacturer of commercial ships, and yacht maker Palmer Johnson Yachts.. A $31,008 grant will enable NWTC to provide welding training, blueprint reading-measurement training, and supervisory training to 187 welders, journey workers and supervisors at Bay Shipbuilding Co., a subsidiary of Manitowoc Co. Inc. that specializes in large ship construction projects.
