Wood Jr. Appointed Chairman at American Superconductor
American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC), a global power technologies company, announced the appointment of John W. Wood Jr. as chairman of the Board, effective August 16. He replaces former chairman and company founder, Gregory J. Yurek, who retired as chief executive officer earlier this year. Wood, 67, has been an independent director of AMSC since 2006. Prior to joining AMSC’s Board, Wood was chief executive officer of Analogic Corporation, a leading designer and manufacturer of medical imaging and security systems. Before joining Analogic, he held senior executive positions over a 22-year career at Thermo Electron Corporation. Wood is a director for FLIR Systems, Inc. and ESCO Corporation.

FLIR Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: FLIR) announced that John W. Wood, Jr. has been elected to the Board of Directors for a term expiring at the Company's 2010 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. Mr. Wood has also been appointed to serve on the Corporate Governance Committee of the Board of Directors. Mr. Wood served as chief executive officer of Analogic Corporation, a leading designer and manufacturer of medical imaging and security systems, from 2003 to 2006, and is currently a consultant. Prior to joining Analogic, he held senior executive positions over a 22-year career at Thermo Electron Corporation. He served as president of Peek Ltd., a division of Thermo Electron Corporation, and as a senior vice president of the parent company.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the largest independent institution of its kind in the world, recently began developing a new piston corer for retrieving sediments from the ocean floor. Once complete in 2006, the deep-water coring system will be the largest in the U.S. and among the biggest in the world. The corer’s enormous weight — 25,000 pounds — coupled with the environmental demands associated with working in water up to 20,000 ft. deep presented major technical challenges to the system required to lower the corer to the sea floor then recover it, along with its ancient sediment samples. Ports to Get Radiation Detectors
The Department of Homeland Security, under a program called the Advanced Spectroscopic Portal Initiative, recently announced the award of contracts to three companies- Raytheon Company – Integrated Defense Systems, Thermo Electron Corporation, and Canberra Industries, Inc.- to install advanced radiation detector systems in some U.S. ports. The first test installation is slated to be in the Port of Staten Island. These contracts come after months of debate and argument over the issue of limited ability to inspect more than 5 percent of all cargo containers entering the country. According to ThreatsWatch.org, the fear in this matter is that dangerous contraband such as a radiological dirty bomb or a chemical-biological weapon might enter through the ports undetected.
