MTU has been chosen by the Korean Coast Guard (KCG) to provide propulsion and onboard power for a new class of patrol vessels in its ever expanding and modernizing fleet. The new 5,000-ton displacement patrol vessel will be powered by four MTU 20V1163M94 engines in a Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) propulsion configuration, with onboard power provided by four 12V4000M23S gensets. The first of the new class of vessels will begin service in 2016.
The newest MTU Series 1163M04 engine has upgraded features with a common rail fuel injection system, an advanced electronic engine management system and an improved combustion process to meet the present IMO2 emission regulations. With its improved lifecycle cost, compact design and best-in-class power density and acceleration characteristics, theMTUSeries1163-04 engine sets the industry benchmark. Each of the four 20V1163M04 engines in the new KCG 5000-ton vessel will produce7,400 kW (9,923bhp)at 1,300 rpm.

In 2008, the KCG embarked on a fleet expansion and modernization plan to complement the increasing demands of ensuring maritime safety and control of the coast of South Korea. The expansion, that is still ongoing, has seen MTU supply a total of 72 units of Series 1163 and Series 4000 engines, together with MTU automation systems, to the KCG’s new fleet of ships.
