Global organisation continues to develop powerhouse in Houston to serve industry and society

Lloyd's Register Americas, Inc. has appointed Regional Marine Manager Tim Protheroe to also lead the organisation's Houston-based energy business from July 1.

As the commercial links between the marine and energy sectors increase, Protheroe's appointment is expected to advance the development of the common strategies required to address the environmental and regulatory challenges faced by Lloyd's Register's clients.

"Our Houston operations are building on our 100-year history in the US by becoming a more active member of the community through local sponsorships and community-support projects," Protheroe said. “We are also investing in our people, our technology and our facilities to support companies that are committed to the kind of safe, sustainable and efficient operations that benefit industry and society.”

Protheroe said has accepted the dual responsibility in the full knowledge that his experienced marine and energy teams will be made even stronger by the potential to combine the skills sets of the two divisions.

"This is a case where the whole definitely can be greater that the sum of the parts and the market will benefit from that," he said.

He will inherit the energy leadership role from Duco de Haan, who will relocate to the Netherlands to serve as the chief executive and managing director of the ModuSpec Group, a member of the Lloyd’s Register Group.

ModuSpec is the global leader of innovative technical services that support the safety and integrity of drilling assets.

Along with the change in leadership, Lloyd’s Register Americas’ prominence in the energy sector will be even more pronounced this summer, when its local offices are consolidated to one site in Houston’s Energy Corridor.

“The move will bring together experts from a range of disciplines – surveyors, engineers, assessors and experts in risk-management, safety, the human element and environmental services – under one roof in a collaborative environment,” said Paul Huber, President of Lloyd's Register Americas, Inc.

A state-of-the art training facility at the new site will support cross-disciplinary training courses and seminars, helping clients to meet the challenges of evolving regulations and rapidly advancing technology.

Protheroe joined Lloyd’s Register in 1992 and held leadership roles in London, Copenhagen, Miami and the Seattle marine offices before arriving in Houston in late 2003 to oversee marine business development in the Americas. He was appointed to his current role in July 2007.
