Marlink Announced as Telenor Satellite’s Platinum Partner

Telenor Satellite has announced that Marlink, a worldwide satellite communications provider, has been assigned Platinum Service Provider status for the provision of services on the THOR 7 satellite. Marlink is now integrating its full range of Value Added Services into the THOR 7 product offering, providing high-throughput connectivity to Marlink’s regional vessels across all its market segments, ranging from fishing and commercial shipping to high-end yachts and passenger vessels. “Demand for both reliable and cost-effective connections at sea continues to grow rapidly due to the increased use of IP applications such as broadband internet access, VOIP, video streaming and improved access to corporate networks,” said Tore Morten Olsen, President of Marlink.

Key Issues of Concern to Maritime Industry

KVH Industries, Inc., hosted maritime industry leaders for a frank discussion about cyber security prior to the start of the CMA Shipping 2016 conference in Stamford, Connecticut. During the roundtable, a range of concerns about the current level of vulnerability emerged. Among the key issues identified were complacency by ship operators, lack of training for crew, non-existent contingency plans for dealing with a cyber attack, and the need for a set of best practices for minimizing risks. “We need to bring the same best practices that we expect on shore and in our corporate networks to ships,” said Rick Driscoll, KVH vice president of satellite products and services.

Harris CapRock Debuts New Cyber Security Solution

Harris CapRock Communications, a provider of managed communications services for remote and harsh environments, has launched SafePass Pro, an advanced cyber security solution for proactive defense against cyberattacks targeting oil and gas IT infrastructures. The solution is also available for cruise, maritime and other commercial customers. Industry experts estimate cyber attacks against the global energy industry will cost businesses up to $1.9 billion by 2018. SafePass Pro improves network resources, minimizes malware and spyware, enables centralized control across all sites, enforces acceptable use and security policies (AUP), and provides an opportunity to assess and eliminate network vulnerabilities.

Vizada Launches Pharostar VSAT Service

Vizada, independent satellite communications provider, has launched Pharostar, its proprietary VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) fixed satellite communications service and the latest addition to its maritime broadband portfolio.   Vizada’s new Pharostar VSAT service will help meet increasing market demand for high-performance broadband connectivity at sea. Telenor Signs PGS Geophysical for 2 Years

Telenor Satellite Services announced that PGS Geophysical of Norway has renewed its global satellite communications agreement with Telenor through June 2005. Telenor first began providing communications via satellite to PGS in 1995. The current agreement calls for Telenor to continue to provide its fully-managed Sealink service to a PGS Geophysical fleet of 14 high tech 3D seismic vessels operating around the world. Marlink Launches Broadband Global Area Network Service

Marlink today announced that it now offers a full range of Inmarsat services for customers requiring flexible and efficient land mobile communications over satellite. Marlink's new Regional Broadband Global Area Network (Regional BGAN) offers reliable, 24-hour a day Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity at data speeds of up to 144kbps via a secure channel. France Telecom Launches New Service

France Telecom Mobile Satellite Communications is enhancing its range of value-added services with a satellite-based VPN (virtual private network). The VPN solution for the Fleet family (Fleet-33, 55 & 77) enables maritime users to connect securely to their corporate business network on land, via either ISDN or MPDS transmission mode. It is based on a fixed public IP address that the user can request in order to simplify connections with its business network. The VPN connection via Fleet terminals enables the user to transmit data securely at high speeds (up to 64 Kbit/s), as well as access their everyday work applications securely.

Eutelsat grants Type Approval on Sea Tel's 4996T Model

After a year and a half development process that included antenna upgrades and a new one-piece radome design, Sea Tel applied for and was granted Eutelsat Type Approval on their 4996T maritime VSAT system. This is the first time that a complete maritime "system" including antenna, pedestal and radome has been granted Eutelsat Type Approval. "Being granted Type Approval from Eutelsat is extremely valuable to Sea Tel. We believe it will be even more valuable for our customers who will save many man-hours of required testing time that they will now be able to waive because of this Type Approval," said Robert C. Matthews, Sea Tel Vice President of Technical Sales.
