'Catastrophic' Engine Failure Caused Susan Lynn Towboat Fire -NTSB

A 2019 fire on board a laid up towboat was likely caused by a catastrophic engine failure, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found.The Susan Lynn was docked and in layup at Tom’s Marine & Salvage yard on the Barataria Waterway in Lafitte, La., when the blaze broke out in the engine room on the morning of October 8, 2019, causing an estimated $1,350,000 in damages to the 56-year-old vessel.The fire was extinguished by local firefighters after the vessel’s watchman could not contain the fire and evacuated the vessel.

Apache First Discovery in Australia's Offshore Canning Basin

Apache Corporation  today announced an oil discovery at the Phoenix South-1 well - the company's first discovery in Australia's offshore Canning Basin. Wireline and formation pressure tools have confirmed at least four discrete oil columns ranging in thickness between 85 and 151 feet (26 to 46 meters) in the Triassic Lower Keraudren formation, within an overall, sand-rich section between 13,648 and 14,763 feet below sea level (4,160 to 4,500 meters). Six light oil samples have been recovered from three intervals to date; permeability measurements from the sampled zones indicate a productive oil reservoir with preliminary estimates that there might be as much as 300 million barrels of oil in place.* Evaluation of the formation penetrated in the Phoenix South-1 is under way…

Admiral Explains 3D Printing is Additive Manufacturing

Chief of Fleet Readiness & Logistics, lead coordinator on the Navy's additive manufacturing efforts, explains for those new to 3D printing why the Navy is interested in this technology, and what it is already contributing. Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s Rapid Prototype Lab is saving the Navy thousands of dollars on the Gerald R. Ford-class of aircraft carriers. Instead of traditional wood or metal mockups of ship alterations, which help to prevent expensive rework, the lab prints much cheaper plastic polymer models – in hours, rather than days or weeks. Now all four Navy shipyards have 3D printers working on similar, and other, ways to benefit the Navy.

Inside Paraguay’s Oil Boom

The Republic of Paraguay is a landlocked country in South America bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. The Paraguay River runs through the center of the country from north to south. Due to its central location in South America, it is sometimes referred to as the Heart of South America. Paraguay’s geography consists of grassy plains and wooded hills in the east and mostly low, marshy plains to the west. Paraguay has a population of around 6.5 million, who consume 28,000 barrels per day (bpd) of refined petroleum products. Paraguay currently imports all of its oil, as it does not yet have any domestic production.

i-TEC Launches Revolutionary Well Technology

Stimulation of offshore well achieved in 1.5 days, in contrast to the normal 40-50 days. Well technology company i-TEC has developed a unique, new lower completion ball drop sleeve system which can radically reduce the time it takes to stimulate a well. The i-Frac system allows operators to bring wells in tight formations on line much more quickly than other methods, resulting in potentially huge cost savings and earlier production revenues. SHI Secures Order For FPSO

SHI received an order for a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facility worth US$140 million from Husky Oil Operations Ltd. of Canada on the 31st. As a competitive solution for the development of offshore oil and gas resources capable of the production, storage and offloading of crude oil and gas, an FPSO is a special facility suitable for the development of a medium size deep-sea oil and gas field due to its mobility.The FPSO facility SHI received an order for from Husky Oil Operations Ltd. is of 133,000 tonsmeasuring 272m(L) x 46m(W) x 27m(D). Capable of storing 940,000 barrels, it will be producing maximum 120,000 barrels of crude oil per day from the end of 2004 at the Whit Rose oil field located approximately 350 kilometers off the east coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

PanCanadian Petroleum Ltd., Canada's No. 2 oil company, could soon be on track to develop an East Coast offshore gas project to rival the huge Sable Island project, its chief executive said. PanCanadian, the oil and gas arm of conglomerate Canadian Pacific Ltd., plans to drill two appraisal wells this year near its recent Deep Panuke gas discoveries, made at the site of the exhausted Copan oil project off Nova Scotia. The wells will give the company the geological data it needs to decide whether to pursue more drilling or full development, PanCanadian CEO David Tuer said. Two recent wells drilled into the gas formation beneath the old oil reservoir tested at more than 50 million cubic feet a day each.

Husky Energy, Norsk Hydro Canada Announce Oil Discovery

Husky Energy Inc. Norsk Hydro Canada Oil & Gas say they have found new energy deposits near the Terra Nova oilfield off the East Coast. Calgary-based Husky and Norwegian-owned Norsk Hydro said late Tuesday that offshore drilling in the Jeanne d'Arc Basin off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador had found hydrocarbons near Terra Nova, Canada's second major offshore field after Hibernia. The companies said the West Bonne Bay F-12 well is about 320 kilometres southeast of St. John's. Under a farm-in agreement with Norsk Hydro, Husky drilled the well to a depth of 4,666 metres and also drilled a sidetrack well to determine the size of the oil reservoir. Both wells showed energy deposits in the Upper Hibernia formation, the companies said.

Putting the "Lift" into Liftboats

In the strictest sense, a liftboat is a self-propelled crane barge that can elevate itself above the water line. It is the cranes that make a liftboat such a valuable tool for building and/or renovating offshore oil and gas structures. A recent example of the working ability of these liftboats is the L/B Myrtle, a 137.5-ft. by 92-ft. vessel with a trio of 245-ft. legs, enabling the vessel to work in water depths of 180 ft. with a 15-ft. air gap. The vessel was built by Bollinger Shipyards in their Lockport facility and sent to Bollinger's Amelia, La. shipyard for the outfitting of the three legs. Montco Offshore, Inc., Galliano, La., owns the vessel. Montco owns six liftboats capable of operating in water depths from 75 to 180 ft.
