Conflicting Objectives in Ship Design

“ABS is first and foremost a safety company,” says Richard Korpus, “but safety can arise on many different fronts. Dr. Korpus is Chief Scientist, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the American Bureau of Shipping. In this role Korpus supports the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and underlying organizations through a focus on developing and applying CFD technology. He believes CFD has the potential to change how some of the most challenging problems in marine and offshore classification are solved in the future.

Ballast Water Treatment: Are You on Course for Compliance?

Joined up thinking from two marine technology suppliers addresses impending legislation for Ballast Water Treatment and offers a practical solution for monitoring and recording the correct discharge of ballast water, in real-time. The International Maritime Organizations 2004 Ballast Water Management Convention lays down strict guidelines for the treatment and discharge of ballast water. Already in force as of January 1, 2015 in U.S. waters, universal ratification is expected to occur during the next six months.

New Navy Contracts

DRS C3 System, Inc., Stevensville, Md., is being awarded a $7,935,427 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for research and development activities associated with integrated power system (IPS) advanced modules and IPS ship design tools. This effort supports the research and development of various alternative technologies associated with advanced power systems and development of ship design tools that support the design development of advanced IPS ship concepts and that quantifies technical risks associated with the integrated technology. DRS C3 System, Inc will develop an advanced hydrodynamics simulation tool and related ship design software and an advanced design, modeling & simulation tool for capability-based ship design that includes IPS technology.

Can you share with us some background information? Carbone As a youth I always had a fascination with math, science and technology, so it was no surprise to my friends that I ended up studying engineering. I earned my Bachelor of Engineering degree - in Electrical Engineering - in 1981 from Concordia University in Montreal.

Hyundai, Transas Team to Develop IBS

The Electro Electric Systems Division of Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd, the major global shipbuilder, has chosen Transas as a cooperation partner for the joint development of the new Hyundai – Transas intelligent bridge system (HTIBS). According to the agreement, the new advanced HTIBS to be presented to the international commercial marine market will incorporate hardware and software elements from both manufacturers. These will include the Hyundai Advanced Control and Integration System (ACONIS)…
