The largest Port in the South Island of New Zealand, Lyttelton Port, has welcomed its largest ever container ship.The Singapore–flagged Rio de Janeiro, which can carry nearly 6000 containers and is the length of about three rugby fields, arrived early Saturday.Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) Chief Executive, Peter Davie said, “The Rio de Janeiro is a new class of ship to call at Lyttelton. She can carry 5,905 twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEUs), while the largest container vessels currently visiting Lyttelton commonly carry 4,500 to 5,000 TEUs.“This is an important milestone for Lyttelton Port and our customers. Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) for the development of maritime and logistics studies by providing training to UMT students. PTP chief executive officer Marco Neelsen said the agreement was also a platform for sharing and, Research development in maritime technology and port management sectors. “As one of the world’s top container ports, PTP is looking forward to working closely with UMT in developing industry-ready graduates through various programmes,” he said. He added that some of the programmes included Structured Internship Programme (SIP), 2u2i Programme, Industrial Training programme as well as research and development activities.

Kalmar has extended its long cooperation with Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Malaysia by providing them with 93 terminal tractors for container handling. The approx. EUR 5 million purchase was booked in Cargotec's 2016 third quarter order intake, with first deliveries taking place in December 2016. PTP is Malaysia's largest container terminal and is currently ranked 18th in the Top Container Ports Ranking 2015. Last year, PTP continued to grow and expand its business in the region in spite of the gloomy global economic landscape by recording a total throughput of 9.17 million TEUs or an increase of 7% total growth as compared to 2014.

MSC’s Pearl and Jaguar services will remain unchanged. ‘New Orient’ and ‘New Eagle’ services will be respectively renamed ‘Orient’ and ‘Eagle’. Eagle trade will offer a direct service to Vancouver and Seattle, while Orient will offer a dedicated service to Long Beach. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a Russian oil tanker Zolotoi Most along with 25 crew members for anchoring off Tanjung Piai without authorization, says a report in the Sputnik. "The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has confirmed the detention of the Russian oil tanker near the state of Johor at 12:30 local time [04:30 GMT] on August 18. The tanker was detained over the absence of authorization documents for anchorage," the Russia’s embassy in Kuala Lumpur said. MMEA Johor Baru operations deputy director Commander Iskandar Ishak said that a patrolling unit received information that the vessel MT ZOLOTOJ MOST  had anchored 3.5 nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Piai here at about 9am on Thursday.

Radio Holland Malaysia opened a new office in Johor, Malaysia to support shipping in the ports of Johor and the vicinity. Over the years, Radio Holland Malaysia has expanded its business to the Southern Region of Malaysia known as Gelang Patah, Johor. With this new office, Radio Holland Malaysia aims to be close by to perform service in the ports of Johor. An International Maritime Organization (IMO) workshop is raising awareness of the organization’s regulatory regime dealing with improving energy efficiency and the control of GHG emissions from ships. Participants from Malaysian governmental departments, academia and other related bodies are in attendance at the three-day “MARPOL Annex VI and Technology Transfer” workshop, taking place in Johor, Malaysia (16-18 May). The event is organized under IMO’s GloMEEP project, which is supporting uptake and implementation of energy efficiency measures for shipping in developing countries. Malaysia is one of the 10 GloMEEP lead pilot countries.

CMA CGM announced that a new call at Pointe des Galets (La Reunion) will be introduced on its ASAF service, connecting Asia to West Africa, and operated with 13 vessels of 9,400 TEU. The maiden voyage direct to La Reunion will be operated with m/v CMA CGM TANYA in Xingang on March 22nd, 2016. La Reunion will be reached in 20 days from Shanghai, 16 days from Nansha and 9 days from Southeast Asia. Thru the strategic hub of La Reunion on ASAF service, CMA CGM will offer a fortnightly fixed-day service to Mayotte. Longoni will be reached from Shanghai in 30 days. Stability and service continuity will benefit customers in Comoros and North Madagascar and will permit to further develop the Reefer product.

US-based XVELA, creators of a cloud-based vessel stowage and collaboration platform for ocean carriers and terminal operators, has announced that a wave of new terminal operators and shipping lines have signed on for pilot programs to put the XVELA platform to the test. The Eleonora Maersk container carrier (15,500 TEU) entered the port of Antwerp on Thursday morning with a record draught of 15.65 metres, thus breaking the previous record of 15.50 m. With this new milestone the port of Antwerp once again demonstrates that it is perfectly accessible even for the very largest container carriers in the world. In the Deurganck dock, where the ship is moored, more than 5,000 container movements have been carried out, including 4,300 unloading operations. The vessel is due to leave the port around 1400 hours and then head to Bremerhaven. The Eleonora Maersk forms part of the AE2 Service operated by the 2M Vessel Sharing Agreement between Maersk Line and MSC linking the Far East and Europe.

Container shipper Maersk Line has introduced two new services for its Far East/Southeast India network: the Chennai Express (CHX) and the Chennai Express 2 (CHX2). From January 2016, the shipper will introduce two new services, a vessel sharing agreement on the Chennai Express (CHX) and slot charter agreement on the Chennai Express 2 (CHX2). The revamped network will include a Northern China direct call, headhaul new direct port calls including Singapore, Hong Kong, Yantian and Port Klang, and backhaul new direct port calls including Busan, Singapore and Port Klang.

Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) container handling facility in the Port of Rijeka, Croatia, recently serviced the largest vessel to call in the country, the 10,000 TEU-capacity Gerda Maersk. The 367-meter Gerda Maersk, is part of the 2M Alliance by two of the world’s megaliners Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Co. The alliance, which connects Rijeka and the Far East, deploys 15 vessels with average capacities of 9,600 to 11,300 TEUs. The service starts from the US West Coast and passes through the Pacific, making regular port calls in Busan, South Korea and key ports in the Far East…

During the past five years, trade between Indonesia and the rest of Asia has mushroomed, particularly when compared to trade with North America and Europe (see the graph shown here). How much of this is due to proximity, or Indonesian goods being re-labelled by another Asian country, is beyond the scope of this analysis, but the lack of deep-sea services to the main consumer markets of Europe and North America must play a part, considers the analysis. Although Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous nation and South East Asia’s largest economy, ocean carriers currently offer no direct mainline services to either Europe or the US due to port capacity shortages.

Evergreen Marine Corp. partnered with  French-based CMA CGM Grou, & Yang Ming Marine both offer new container services. Evergreen's new route, called South Red Sea Service, connects Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and countries near the Red Sea, as well as provide services into landlocked African countries like Ethiopia through the East African country of Djibouti, reports Focus Taiwan. The new Red Sea service will begin May 2 with a container ship departing from Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia. The new route will be served by five 2,200 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) vessels -- three operated by Evergreen Marine and two by CMA CGM. Meanwhile, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp.

Effective from 5 January 2011, Hamburg Süd will expand its presence in the trade between Asia and India/Pakistan by joining the new service operated in cooperation with Evergreen and Simatech. The new service (ASIP 2) will deploy 6 x 2,700 TEU (nominal) vessels and has the following port rotation: Xingang – – – – Hong Kong – – Tanjung Pelepas – Port Kelang – Nhava Sheva – – – Port Kelang – Tanjung Pelepas – – Xingang. Evergreen Line has reached an agreement with Wan Hai Lines to exchange slots on Evergreen's NSA/NSB services, as well as Wan Hai's KSS/KVS services with effect from Feb. 22, 2009. The agreement between the two Taiwanese ocean carriers will enhance Evergreen's service network in the intra-Asia trade. The impacted services have the following port rotations:The NSA service rotation is as follows: Osaka - Kobe - Iwakuni - Moji - Hakata - Taipei - Taichung - Kaohsiung - Nansha - Shekou - Hong Kong. The KSS service rotation is as follows: Penang - Port Klang - Pasir Gudang - Singapore - Hong Kong - Kaohsiung - Keelung - Inchon - Kwangyang - Pusan- Keelung- Kaohsiung- Hong Kong- Singapore- Port Klang-Penang.

The official opening of the Malaysian office took place at the Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort, Pasir Gudang, Johor. Present as a guest of honor was Dato’ Mohd Taufik Abdullah, Chairman of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas and Executive Chairman of Johor Port. He performed the official opening together with Mr. Group. Approximately 100 guests from Malaysia and Singapore attended the event. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said that the Container Security Initiative (CSI) is becoming operational at the port of Laem Chaband, Thailand. The CBP issued a Second Press Release stating that CSI is becoming operational at the port of Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia. In both ports, CBP officials will work alongside their local counterparts to identify containers bound for the United States that need additional screening.

Malaysia's Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) intends to buy more than 400 million ringgit ($105 million) of equipment to handle an expected rise in container shipments. PTP's chief executive Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman was quoted by national Bernama news agency as saying he expected volume to triple to 150,000 TEUs by March after averaging 40,000 to 50,000 in the second-half of last year. PTP, a deep-sea port located at the south-western tip of Peninsular Malaysia, created a stir in the shipping world last year when it snatched away Maersk-Sealand, neighboring Singapore's prized client, as its anchor customer and shareholder. Maersk-Sealand, the world's largest shipping line, now owns 30 percent of PTP and is expected to channel some two million TEUs to the port.
