Jerry Nagel Receives Breakbulk Lifetime Achievement Award

Jerry Nagel, chairman of the board at Rickmers-Linie (America) was the recipient of the 8th annual Lifetime Leadership and Achievement Award at the Wed., Oct. 26 kickoff of the 22nd annual Breakbulk Transportation Conference and Exhibition at the New Orleans Convention Center, attended by more than 3,600 breakbulk and heavy-lift industry executives. Nagel, 62, has spent much of the past decade working as president and CEO at Rickmers-Linie (America) in Houston, where he oversaw the expansion of the carrier's business in the Americas.

Ready Reserve Force Ships Successful in Readiness Activation Exercise

U.S. Maritime Administrator Capt. William Schubert today announced on August 26 that three Ready Reserve Force ships successfully completed readiness activation exercises. The three activated ships were the Grand Canyon State and the Gem State, both berthed in Alameda, California, and the Green Mountain State, berthed in Bremerton, Washington. Schubert said, "Readiness exercises such as these keep our ships in shape to provide the support our Armed Forces need. Forty ships of the RRF provided sealift for the Iraqi conflict, and they had an operational reliability record of 98 percent. Turbo Activations, sponsored and monitored by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the U.S. Transportation Command, are made without notice.

Three More Ships Head for Shipbreakers

The Maritime Administration's Captain William G. Schubert announced disposal contracts for three more ships in the James River Reserve Fleet. With the announcement, 37 ship disposal contracts have been awarded since the beginning of 2001, and 24 ships have left the James River Reserve Fleet. "Today marks another day of real progress as we work to address the inherited challenges of the James River Reserve fleet," said Captain William Schubert. The three ships, the Santa Isabel, the Mormacwave, and the American Ranger, are all designated "high priority" for disposal by the Maritime Administration (MARAD). Securing U.S. Ports Against Terror

The Subcommittee on Technology, Terrorism, and Government Information of the Senate Judiciary Committee conducted a hearing on February 26, 2002 concerning Securing our Ports Against Terrorism: Technology, Resources and Homeland Defense. Captain William Schubert, Maritime Administrator, testified about grants to be provided to critical national seaports to finance the cost of enhancing facility and operational security. Bonni Tischler, Assistant Commissioner, Customs Service, testified about the agency’s Container Security Initiative. RADM Kenneth Venuto, USCG, testified about Maritime Domain Awareness. Richard Steinke, representing the American Association of Port Authorities, discussed efforts by U.S. port authorities to improve security.

MarAd Administrator Schubert to Address Security Council Conference

One of the nation's most comprehensive forums on all aspects of supply chain security since last fall's terrorist attacks, will be held from June 13-15 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Transportation Secretary Awards $92.3M in Grants

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta, marking a significant milestone in the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) ongoing port security efforts, today announced the award of $92.3 million in grants to 51 ports located throughout the nation to enhance the security of ports and other facilities. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mineta To Announce Grants

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta will announce $92.3 million in grants to 77 seaports to enhance the security of the maritime transportation system. The Secretary will be joined in making the announcement today by Congressman Bill Young (FL), U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thomas H. Collins, U.S. Maritime Administrator William Schubert, Rear Admiral Richard E. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Joseph J. Seymour, Executive Director, and Charles A. Authority of New York and New Jersey. The announcement will take place at 2:00, p.m., at Battery Park in New York. Congress provided funding for the grant program to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transportation Security Administration, which is responsible for security in all modes of transportation.

DP World Exec Withdraws Nomination

Reports indicate that an executive with a Dubai-owned company withdrew his nomination as head of the agency that oversees ports in a letter to President Bush on Monday. David C. Sanborn, of Virginia, to be Administrator of the Maritime Administration, vice William Schubert, which was sent to the Senate on January 18, 2006. More Ships to Leave Ghost Fleet

Two more ships are leaving the James River, headed for disposal facilities in Virginia and Maryland, in what has become a regular occurrence since the Bush Administration took over management of the nation’s ship disposal program five years ago, the U.S. Maritime Administration announced. The Howard W. Gilmore is scheduled to leave the James River Reserve Fleet at Fort Eustis on Thursday, making it the 50th ship to leave the river since January 1, 2001. It is one of the last World War II-vintage ships still at the fleet, which is good news for the ship disposal program, according to John Jamian, MARAD’s Acting Administrator. In a news conference at the fleet site today, Jamian said, “Our disposal efforts can keep moving to newer ships, which bring better prices in the scrap steel market.

MTS Development MOU is Signed

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the Maritime Information Service of North America, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further develop the Marine Transportation System (MTS). MISNA is a non-profit maritime organization established to provide communications, information and services to ensure safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible maritime operations. MISNA's membership is largely composed of marine exchanges. Some of the products and services MISNA provides to its clients, governmental entities, and the interested public are vessel monitoring, information on arrivals and departures, vessel traffic analysis, ship tracking, and port and terminal utilization studies.

MARAD Activates Reserve Force Ships

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) has activated 13 Ready Reserve Force (RRF) ships on January 24 to support Operation Enduring Freedom. The activations follow orders received from the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command. The recently-activated ships join 19 others already activated to support Operation Enduring Freedom. These, combined with four others on long-term assignment, bring the total of activated MARAD RRF ships to 36. For more than 25 years, MARAD’s RRF has augmented the Military Sealift Command’s 125-ship cargo fleet. The ships were used in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and more recently in Haiti, Somalia, Croatia, Bosnia, and for humanitarian support as part of Hurricane "Mitch" relief in Central America.

Marad Activates More RRF Ships

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) today activated two more Ready Reserve Force (RRF) ships to support Operation Enduring Freedom. The activations follow orders received from the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command. The two ships, the CAPE LOBOS and the CAPE LAMBERT, are part of the James River Reserve Fleet anchored near Fort Eustis, VA. “The maritime community has served America with great distinction during every major crisis in our Nation’s history, and the mariners who crew the ships are the cornerstone of this effort,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta. The recently-activated ships join 32 others already activated to support Operation Enduring Freedom.
