Coast Guard's Top Enlisted & Civilians Recognized

Senior leaders at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington formally recognized the service’s top enlisted and civilian members during the 2013 Coast Guard Persons of the Year Awards Ceremony.

Vice Adm. Peter Neffenger, the vice commandant of the Coast Guard, presided over the morning ceremony in the CDR Ray Evans Conference Center to recognize the contributions of the following Coast Guard members:

  • William Martin, the 2013 Coast Guard Non-Appropriated Fund Employee of the Year;

  • Alice Slate, the 2013 Coast Guard Civilian Employee of the Year;

  • Petty Officer 1st Class Wesley Mundy, the 2013 Coast Guard Reserve Enlisted Person of the Year;
  • Petty Officer 1st Class Travis Cutler, the 2013 Coast Guard Enlisted Person of the Year.

Martin is a recreation assistant serving at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Slate is an education services specialist serving at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound in New Haven, Conn. Mundy is a maritime enforcement specialist assigned to Coast Guard Special Missions Training Center’s Deployment Training Detachment Portsmouth, Va. Cutler is an avionics electrical technician assigned to Coast Guard Air Station

“Mr. Martin, Ms. Slate, Petty Officer Cutler and Petty Officer Mundy, you should be very proud of your accomplishments,” said Neffenger. You all performed well beyond your regulator duties and responsibilities with outstanding dedication, leadership and performance.”

“Thank you all for setting a positive example for all Coast Guardsmen to follow.”

The awardees received numerous awards as well as gifts from sponsor organizations. As a result of being named the Enlisted Person of the Year and the Reserve Enlisted Person of the Year, Cutler and Mundy were authorized to be meritoriously advanced to the next higher pay grade. During the ceremony, Cutler was advanced to chief petty officer.

Mundy, who was not present at the ceremony due to a more pressing family obligation, will be presented all awards and gifts, and be advanced to chief petty officer, at a future ceremony.
