Underwater Bow Thruster Reinstallation

Photo: Hydrex

A month after a Hydrex diver/technicians removed the bow thruster of a 300-meter container vessel a team once again mobilized to Italy. They reinstalled the overhauled unit underwater with the use of the company’s flexible mobdock technique. The available time window for the removal of the bow thruster in October was very short because of the tight schedule of the vessel’s charterer. The time required to perform the operation therefore needed to be brought back to the absolute minimum. For this reason the job was split in parts, performed in different ports.

New Approaches to Inland Infrastructure Renewal

A new engineered repair system for seawalls is based on fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) technology that has been used for several years to repair and strengthen worn and damaged marine piles made of timber or concrete using specialized composites. Pictured here are worn bridge piles being wrapped with FRP laminates in St. Louis

Economical repairs are being applied to rapidly corroding steel and concrete structures in U.S. ports and inland waterways. The new repair systems – PileMedic & SPiRe – might just be what the doctor ordered. Recent advancements in using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) for major structural repair and strengthening of submerged marine piles made of concrete or even timber has led to an economical, less invasive infrastructure repair solution for inland port development compared to current systems.

In July Hydrex mobilized a team of diver/technicians to Syros, Greece, for a complex repair operation on a 118-meter, 8550 DWT chemical tanker. The vessel had suffered large cracks in her hull plating as the result of a collision. She was not allowed to sail any further. Hydrex proposed a permanent on-site repair using an open top cofferdam. This would enable the fully laden ship to continue her journey. The tanker was berthed in Egypt when another vessel struck her portside hull. This caused a large hole, severe cracks and dented plating.

PPG by the Numbers: 580, 690 & 700

PPG caps a busy 2013 by launching three separate coatings; each intended for a specific application. As regulatory and operational requirements drive coatings decisions, it’s increasingly clear that, on the water, one size does not fit all anymore. You can get there, nevertheless, by the numbers. It has been a busy year for PPG Protective and Marine Coatings (PPG). With at least three new marine product releases and even a new production plant in Poland, the Pittsburgh, PA-based global coatings and specialty products company hasn’t stopped long enough to give the proverbial barnacles the smallest chance to slow its growth. Founded in 1883 and operating in nearly 70 countries around the world, PPG’s sales in 2012 exceeded $15 billion.

Repair Technology: SPS Overlay: Fix Steel Decks Faster

Despite the quality of protection and commitment to maintenance, a certainty in the marine business is that metal structures eventually corrode and wear. Whether it is 25 months or 25 years, most all marine structures will enter a shipyard for some quantity of steel renewal throughout its life. While the process of removing and replacing steel, particularly decks, is at best a manual and laborious process, Intelligent Engineering (IE) is touting its innovative SPS Overlay structural re-instatement process as a means to help shipowners and ship repairers to save valuable time and money. What is SPS? SPS, invented by IE in association with BASF, is a patented system whereby two metal plates are bonded to a solid elastomer core.
