Alaska Marine Lines Picks Up Sause's Hawaii Service and Barges

Alaska Marine Lines expanded its fleet with the purchase of two cargo barges, the Kamakani and Namakani, from Oregon-based Sause Bros. Sause terminated its Hawaii service in March and Alaska Marine Lines is now serving its customers.The Kamakani and the Namakani are now the largest of all Alaska Marine Lines vessels – each with a 438-foot overall length and 105 feet of width and a payload of 16,869 tons. MARAD Awards More Than $20 Mln to Small US Shipyards

More than $20 million in grant funding has been awarded to support capital improvement projects at 29 small shipyards in 22 states across the U.S.The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) Small Shipyard Grant Program, supports capital improvements that foster increased efficiency and economic growth.“These grants are an investment in our country’s small shipyards and will help create good jobs for America’s workers,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L.

Dellner Brakes: Serving Inland and Coastal Waterways Markets

A luffing and trolley travel hoist for bagged material used by two vessel loaders at Lake Charles, Louisiana. The hoists are fitted with Dellner SKP service brakes with mounting stands installed between the hoist motors and the reduction gears. The brakes were also manufactured with extra protection to prevent corrosion from sea water.

Dellner provides a range of clutch and braking products for the inland (brown water) and coastal workboat markets. Dellner products are used in a wide range of workboats including tugs, fishing boats and coast guard vessels. Major customers include US Seafoods, Trident Seafoods, Pesca Azteca, Frabelle Fishing, Western Rivers, ARTCO, Campbell Transportation, Moran Towing, Crowley Maritime, Excell Marine, Hunter Marine, Canal Barge, Andrie, Foss Maritime, Kirby Corporation, Sause Bros and Seaspan.

AMP Honors Senator Mazie Hirono

The American Maritime Partnership (AMP), the voice of the domestic maritime industry, today recognized U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) with the 2016 Champion of Maritime Award. Sen. Hirono is honored for her long-standing support and commitment to the men and women of American Maritime in her work on the Senate Armed Services Committee and as a Ranking Member of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Energy. Marcon Sells 3,900BHP Tug Overseas

Marcon International, Inc. of Coupeville, Washington announced the sale of the 3,900BHP, U.S. flag twin screw tug Maria Brusco (ex-Ocean Service) from a U.S. owner to private overseas buyers for transfer to registry under foreign flag. The 127’ x 32’ x 14’ depth tug was originally built in 1967 by Burton Shipyard Inc. in Port Arthur, Texas as Hull 404 for International Bulk Transport of Wilmington, Delaware and operated for Sonat Marine of Philadelphia towing petroleum barges coastwise. The tug underwent a major reconstruction in 1987 under her previous ownership.

MTU Engines for Sause Bros. Fleet Modernization

Towboat Invitational Raises $295k for Charity

On Monday, July 26, Foss Maritime, Harley Marine Services and Sause Bros. sponsored the 11th annual Towboat Invitational at The Golf Club at Newcastle. The tournament brings together almost 300 people in the towboat industry all raising money for two deserving organizations, The Heart Institute at Virginia Mason Medical Center and the Boys and Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon. Towboat 2010 was another sold out tournament despite the economic downturn within the marine industry.

MARAD $14.7M in Grants for Small Shipyards

On April 15, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced $14.7m in grant awards to help improve 17 small shipyards in 16 states. The funds will help these shipyards become more competitive by purchasing modern equipment and training workers. “These grants will help modernize small shipyards and strengthen our economy by making sure we maintain the ability to build and repair ships in the United States,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Small shipyards are an important part of our nation’s shipbuilding industry,” said David Matsuda, Acting Maritime Administrator. Repowering a Hawaiian Tug: More Power, Better Air Quality

Techcrane Global Corporation is a Covington, La.-based marine crane manufacturer/distributor who recently installed Techcrane Model F250-100 onboard Torch Offshore L.L.C.'s Midnight Wrangler. This was a crane custom-designed for Torch with a maximum capacity of 125 tons at 30-ft. reach. Time lapse between design conceptions to fabrication in Covington, La., was less than six months. The bid was awarded to Techcrane in December of 2002 for delivery in mid 2003 and is a part of the project to convert the Midnight Wrangler into a deepwater pipelaying vessel. In order to accommodate these deepwater arenas, a winch was specially designed by Lantec on behalf of Techcrane for the F250 to handle 8,000 ft. of two-in. wire rope.

Second Azimuth Stern Drive tug for Sause Bros.

Designed and built by Southern Oregon Marine (SOMAR) Shipyard, in Coos Bay, Ore., new Azimuth stern drive (ASD) tug Tira Lani was recently delivered to Sause Bros. The tug will join ASD Kamaehu and Pono for duty, assisting ships arriving and departing Honolulu Harbor and their own barge movements in the harbor. Tira Lani is the first tugboat constructed from the keel up by SOMAR. The vessel is powered by twin Caterpillar Model 3516B electronic controlled propulsion engines rated at 2,100 hp @ 1,600 rpm, driving through Ulstein Model 1650 Azimuth stern drives with 86 in. diameter propellers in nozzles. The propulsion system gives a service speed of 13 knots, a bollard pull astern of more than 100,000 lbs., and a bollard pull ahead of 120,000 lbs.

EBDG Completes Contract Design for ATB

Elliot Bay Design Group (EBDG) recently completed a contract design, including an extensive model basin testing program, for an articulated tug and barge (ATB) for Sause Bros., Ocean Towing of Coos Bay, Ore. ATB has been designed specifically for oceangoing service in the North pacific petroleum product trade. The unit also incorporates many features requested by Sause Bros. Elliot Bay's design calls for 135.5 ft.(41.3 m) tug combined with a 543.7 ft. (165.7 m) barge, connected by an Intercon coupler. The coupler provides a secure attachment between the tug and the barge, while allowing free motion about the pitch axis. Both the tug and the barge are designed to meet SOLAS requirements, and will be classed by the American Bureau of Shipping.

The ATB : A History of the State-of-the-Art

(This is Part II of a two-part series on the Articulated Tug Barge from Robert P. Hill. Why The ATB? The ATB, or "Articulated Tug/Barge" unit is designed to combine the economics of tugboat and barge operation with the speed and weather-reliability of a ship. A hallmark of this concept that makes it different from the ITB or "Integrated Tug/Barge" is the fact that both the tug and the barge are truly independent vessels able to operate successfully even if not together. The tug is a full ABS or internationally-classed ocean tug, capable of meeting all SOLAS regulations where required. It can be made capable of towing and other traditional tug missions.

Greenbrier Announces New Marine Orders

The Greenbrier Companies announced today that its Gunderson Marine division in Portland, Oregon has received an order from Sause Bros. for a 100,000 barrel double-hull oceangoing oil barge. The order is the fourth in a series of barges currently on order from Sause Bros., also headquartered in Oregon. Coupled with other recent orders from Alaska Marine Lines, a Lynden company, Greenbrier's marine backlog is now valued at over $30 million, and extends into mid-2004. Gunderson, through its marine and railcar divisions, currently has over 1,100 employees, 15% of which are dedicated to marine. Gunderson is actively seeking 60 new employees due to an upturn in both the marine and railcar marketplace. The Sause Bros.
