Outfitting the Modern Workboat

MetalCraft Marine’s 10 Meter Interceptor model is a formidable workboat. Defined by the sum of its myriad parts, it really can be seen that ‘the equipment makes the boat.’ This month, we ask "What's in Your workboat?"In a business where there is rarely any shortage of pretty boats, cutting edge designs and equally impressively performing workboat tonnage, it is also true that the real value to any design is cemented by the very equipment that makes it run. Typically, however, comparing apples to apples when it comes to selecting your next patrol, fire, SAR or pilot boat is almost impossible. Until now.Kick the tires. Pop open the hood. Put this one up on the jacks. Spend a little time under the chassis.

The sulfur emission control areas (SECAs) in place in North-America and Northern Europe, in combination with the upcoming global 0.5% limit on sulfur in 2020 (or 2025) and similar EU limits in 2020, call for alternative fuels as a means for compliance. Several alternative fuels are available and, at the same time, new fuel oil products with very low sulfur content have been introduced. In this respect, the ability of the new MAN ME-LGIP engine to run on LPG, which is a sulfur-free fuel…

Mercury Marine was in New York City earlier this year offering test drives for select engines and control systems. While in town, John C. Pfeifer, President - Mercury Marine, sat down with Maritime Reporter & Engineering News to discuss marine technology development that is driving his company further, faster into emerging commercial growth opportunities globally. Barreling down the Hudson River at nearly 80 mph in a 39-ft. Cigarette boat powered by four 350-hp Mercury Marine Verado outboard engines tends to leave an impression. More impressive?

Two-Stroke Milestones

Eastern seaboard operator Gypsum Transportation provided a beacon for the industry when it nominated a camshaft-less, electronically controlled Sulzer diesel engine for its 50,000-dwt-bulker newbuild project. Now, the interests behind a Mediterranean reefership scheme have also endorsed the concept, which represents a milestone in two-stroke technology, and signals a step change in large diesel engine operating flexibility. In one sense, MAN B&W stole a march on arch-rival Wärtsilä through the recent conversion at sea of a low-speed, MC-series propulsion engine to full electronic control. However, Wärtsilä's latest success in sealing contracts for two Sulzer engines configured from the outset for operation in electronic mode gives new commercial succour to the group's technological drive.

Equipment:Yanmar Makes Mark in Military Duty

Laborde Products of Covington, La., is applying the Yanmar short stroke diesel technology to the military and light duty commercial markets. The short stroke technology allows Yanmar to provide higher rpms, which provides benefits to both water jet applications, IO applications as well as standard inboard installations. The short stoke provides the higher rpms without significantly increasing piston speed. Doug Oehrlein, Laborde Products COO, said that these benefits are being applied in a number of application. The U.S. Navy Seals, working with United States Marine, Inc, have selected Yanmar 6LY2-STP to be used in their new SOCR Riverene Craft.
